Chapter 26: Chapter 26               Wally Visits Joshua in Prison

Chapter 26               

 

 

Even a deadly earthquake or a killer tornado could not wake José who sleeping his blessed afternoon nap.Suddenly like a scene from hell something was shoved into his mouth. José's terrified eyes focus on his mouth and he sees to his anxiety the barrel of a gun stuck in his mouth. He shivers with fear and his eyes begin to follow the arm holding the gun, continue up the shoulder and finally meet the threatening eyes of Wally who smiles at José who's sweating as if he is in a sauna.

"Hello dear…how are you? I want you to tell me the truth about your bracelet or I'll put a bullet in your head, OK? I'll ask you questions and you sign with your face yes or no…understand?"

 José still watches Wally in terror and cannot respond… he is sure Wally has gone craze and wants to kill him.

"Did you understand me José? Nod if you did" José quickly nods his head

"Did you find the bracelet the same day you saw the killer?"

José nods again

"Did you find the bracelet near the killer, not far from where the boy's body was found?"

José nods

"If I didn’t come here today, would you have told the police about the bracelet?"

José almost nods and then corrects himself and shakes his head no. suddenly Wally smiles

"If you know something about this case will you tell me now?"

José nods enthusiastically and almost chokes. Wally smiles an evil smile and takes his gun out of his mouth

"You love me, don’t you? And will never tell anyone I threatened you right? Give me the bracelet now!"

José looks at Wally sadly and quickly takes the bracelet off his arm and gives it to Wally.

"Yes Wally. I love you, I won't tell anyone you threatened me…it's not true…I gave you all the information freely and of my own accord, I wanted to help the police!"

Wally puts the bracelet into a plastic bag and into his coat pocket. José tries to sit up in bed.

"Hold on José. Where do you think you're going?"

He waves the gun in José's face again and his face turns frightening.

"I can't let you live because we at the police kill those who tell the truth too"

Wally smiles diabolically. He holds the gun confidently and he points it at José's heart. His finger enters the trigger and José's eyes open wide until now close in terror…he senses death and can't even scream. Wally finger pulls the trigger and a loud bang can be heard. José feels the slam of the bullet in his chest and knows he's probably dead… floating between worlds. Suddenly he hears a frightening laughter. He feels his chest in fear and can't find a sign for the bullet hole or the blood that is supposed to be there. Wally laughs so hard his stomach hurts

"I fooled you José…it wasn’t a real bullet…it was a dummy…"

"Huh…You fooled me?"

José starts laughing too…

"You son of a bitch…I should kill you bastard!"

Suddenly and without warning he pulls out a commando knife from under his bed and stabs Wally in the stomach and yells crazily

"It's my bracelet and no one is going to take it from me…not even you, Wally"

Wally pales and freezes because he couldn’t stop José and screams in terror

"Are you crazy? You just stabbed me!!"

Wally is certain he's about to die at any moment he checks his stomach and is amazed to see José writhing with laughter on the floor.

"I fooled you Wally…it's not a real knife…it’s a toy"

They hug and pat each other on the back and can't stop their foolish laughter

Suddenly José asks curiously

"I don’t get it…what would the killer do with the bracelet now? He's going to hell tomorrow night…or maybe you want the bracelet for yourself like everyone else?"

"Don’t be stupid José…I need the bracelet to show it to Joshua…I wonder how he'll respond…maybe he doesn’t remember the bracelet is gone…he doesn’t know it was found by the body" José answers cynically "yeah, and maybe my grandmother just won the lottery…but she's been dead for five years"

He adds fearfully

"Just so you know, Wally…this bracelet is cursed…bad things kept happening to me because of it…I was almost conned in a jewelry store…some high school kids tried to snatch it off my arm and even a call girl almost stole it from me…there were some decent people who tried to get me to sell it to them but I wouldn’t…I'm telling you Wally, be careful… it's cursed!"

"It's OK José; nothing will happen to me…I'm a police officer…"

He waves his gun in the air and winks at José…

"Let someone try and steal it from me"

Eve's face is radiant with joy…the only time she's ever felt like this was five years ago when she learned the baby in her stomach was a boy! The sound of her footsteps is swallowed by the thick carpet of the medical complex where she works. She passes by Dr. Gideon's office and sees his profile. He is writing notes in a patient's file. Eve walks down the hall again until she reaches Dr. Gideon's office. The door is ajar but he is not there. Eve walks in and sits down. A minute later there is a knock on the door and woman's face appears. She asks Eve aggressively

"Excuse me… I am waiting for Dr. Gideon…what number in line are you?"

Eve smiles and imagines the heel of her shoe flying through the air landing in the woman's face

"What number am i? I am number one! Can't you see I'm waiting for the doctor before you?"

The woman is so embarrassed and she can only stutter as she closes the door behind her. Gideon walks down the hall holding patient's files in his hand. He sees the woman waiting outside his office.

"Hello, do you need to come in? Is it your turn?"

"No doctor. There's someone in there...she's waiting for you in the office"

"OK… you can go in after her"

He walks in and shuts the door still not recognizing Eve who sits in the chair with her back to him. He passes by her on his way to the desk

"Hello…What's your name?"

He backs off as he notices its Eve as she answers laconically

"Eve…Yes, it's me!!"

He tries coming closer to her but she retreats

. "I have to tell you something…providing you keep your distance…I wanted to tell you that I had my scan today and I have a daughter and everything's OK. So, if anyone talks to about our daughter…pretend you're happy. Play the happy father, OK? We'll play the happy couple until we figure this out"

"But I'm really happy for us…"

He comes closer hesitatingly…

"Why are you pushing me away? Would you stop judging me for what I said the other night? I've said I'm sorry so many times! I guess you forgot we're a couple? You can't just keep ignoring me all the time. Either you start screwing me like we used to or I'm leaving your fucking house…get it?"

"You don’t scare me...and I don’t give a shit…I don’t want to screw you…you can do whatever you like, my dear husband!!"

She gets up and leaves the office as if he doesn’t exist. The woman waiting outside the office gets up quickly and Eve smiles at her and says

"Dr. Gideon is my husband…we are having a daughter together…and are overjoyed… understand?"

The woman looks at Eve shocked and envious. She walks into the office and hands Gideon her file.                                                                                                                                 

"Congratulations, Dr. Gideon"

He looks at her amazed

"Your wife just told me you're having a daughter and that you are happy…isn’t it great?"

"What a question? Am I the happiest father alive? Am I looking happy?"

Joshua waits in the infirmary for the doctor to examine him after feeling pain in his left arm. One of the guards walks into the doctor's office whose busy examining another prisoner.

"I wanted to let you know that Joshua is in the infirmary…he claims his left arm hurts him. When can I bring him in to see you?"

"Ahhh…sweet Joshua! I'm busy now"

He winks at the guard "keep him entertained until I can see him". The guard smiles in satisfaction and goes back to the infirmary! At the same time a car stops into the prison parking lot and Wally steps out of it and locks his car. He walks towards the prison gate and shows his ID to the guard at the entrance.

"Hello. I need to speak to Joshua Solomon"

"Hold on…"

The guards check his ID and writes down his details in the visitor's log. He calls the control room watching Joshua's cell and asks for information about Joshua's whereabouts.

"He's at the infirmary right now…go in. walk straight and the turn left". 

Wally thanks the guard and walks in heading for the infirmary. Joshua is scared to death…the three guards who walked him to the infirmary are now closing in on him with a sadistic smile on their faces. They are unaware that Wally is quietly sneaking in. he watches the infirmary from the hidden camera.

"We'll show you what happens to anyone who complains about us"

"You're a child killing monster…we'll going to screw you"

"Don’t worry about the chair…we'll finish you off before you get there"

The three guards jump Joshua who tries to shield his head with his hands and screams in horror. After a minute of taking a beating Wally runs inside yelling

"Stop it right now! I'm a police officer and I need to speak to Joshua"

The shocked guards top beating Joshua and approach Wally threateningly

"How can you defend this filthy killer? You have no jurisdiction her…go back to your station…get out of here"

Wally shoves the guards aside and takes Joshua with him outside. The doctor, hearing the commotion, comes out of his office

"Where are you taking this monster? The prisoner is not yours…I am the doctor and he is waiting for my examination"

Wally shoves the doctor aside as well and screams in their frightened faces

"You're in on it, right? So what…you beat him and then examine him? You're enjoying it, aren’t you? You little puissant in a white coat!! Just so you know, I have friends here in prison, both prisoners and guards who tell me everything! Next time you even think about doing something like this you'll go to prison as prisoners…I'll make sure of it personally".

The guards and doctor are frozen and have grown pale

"I want you to make sure, from this moment on that he receives the best meals in prison…a newspaper…candy…whatever he wants. I don’t care if you have to spend your own money to do it! I'll call him every day and if I hear that he complained…no one will find your bodies…"

Wally takes Joshua with him. He doesn’t understand what's going on and would rather not talk…he's worried Wally is a mental patient or a pervert or even a bigger sadist than the guards. Before they reach death row block Wally stops and says

"I understand your cell is full of cameras and hidden microphones and we can't talk there…I'll look for someplace else"

Wally looks around and finds an unlocked unpopulated office. He lets Joshua in and closes the door after them. Joshua gets even more nervous… he is sure Wally played the guards and doctor and is going to abuse him!

"Sit down, Joshua…I have something important to discuss with you". 

Joshua sits on a chair in front of Wally. A desk sits between them. Wally watches him and lays the bracelet he took from José on the desk. Joshua looks at the bracelet without understanding. Wally smiles

"I am giving you back the bracelet you lost, Joshua"

"I don’t understand…what are you talking about? This bracelet isn’t mine…I don’t know this bracelet"

"Don’t play me Joshua…this bracelet was found in the same place where you buried Isaac's body… you can have it back…it's yours!!"

Wally takes the bracelet and puts it on Joshua's arm who flings it back at Wally.

"I don’t understand what you want…this bracelet isn’t mine…maybe someone else was murdered and this bracelet was his and you're trying to frame me for another murder! I didn’t kill the kid. Leave me alone…I want to go back to my cell, Now!!"

Joshua tries to stand up but Wally sits him back down forcefully and holds his shoulder threateningly.

"You will sit on this chair until I decide otherwise!!"

He slaps Joshua.

"You almost had me fooled that you're innocent!! Now, I understand why you won't admit the bracelet is yours and that you dropped it when you hid Isaac's body in the landfill…but it won't help you…you're the monster that killed Isaac and luckily for us, your end is near. Like an idiot I saved you from the guards and the doctor. Stand up". 

Wally puts the bracelet back into his pocket angrily. Joshua watches him with mockery which sends his nervous racing.

"Get up filth!"

Joshua stands up and walks forward smirking.

"Move faster, child rapist, filthy murderer…sadist"

He pushes Joshua violently and hits him over the head and body.

"I've met some criminals in my days…thieves, perverts, rapists, murderers…but you're number one! You are the first and last!! You're the only one who acts out of absolute evil!! You are evil personified in man...you are absolute evil!"

Joshua bursts out laughing a diabolical laughter. Wally makes an effort not to shoot him in the head with the gun he's holding in his hand and rid the world of absolute evil! They arrive at Joshua's cell. The three guards are waiting there!

"Take the monster inside…believe me, I wanted to shoot him in the head right now…I wish I had the guts"

Joshua is thrown into his cell by all of them and the cell is locked behind him. Wally watches the cell with dislike.

"I'm sorry guys! I was wrong…I know I felt sorry for the monster before but I realize now that I was wrong…I want you to forget everything I told you…screw him freely!! Make him suffer"

He hugs the shocked guards who don’t know what to make of  him…fifteen minutes ago he humiliated them, threatened them and protected Joshua and now he's apologizing and demanding they abuse him! Could he be mental? Or on drugs?

"I have to go, guys…see you…I'm sorry again…you're OK. And if anyone tries defending the scum…let me know. See you"

Wally waves goodbye and disappears…they wave goodbye back and laugh crazily. They still don’t understand what just happened and the surreal meaning of the events.
