In the year 2AE (After Exodus), 5 years after a cataclysmic virus called eX-271 ravaged the world, forcing humanity to quarantine in tightly controlled facilities and bunkers, an event known as Exodus, humanity has finally produced a vaccine and begin to leave the quarantine facilities and rebuild their home. However in the year 4AE, a few rare individuals unbeknownst to them were found to be slightly resistant to the vaccine and succumb to the now endemic virus. A revolutionary medical procedure called Liquify-Gene-cHromosome Therapy (LiGHT) was soon developed three years later in 7AE that allowed such people to live, but not without side effects.

The procedure, inspired by how caterpillars transform into a butterfly by completely liquifying their body and remaking it, allowed the people suffering from the eX virus whose bodies were literally melting from the inside out, live again. However their genders are completely reversed, and severe damage to parts to the brain leave them seemingly apathetic and virtually emotionless. In exchange their intelligence and physical strength are enhanced and their physical appearance reverted to that of a child about 5 years old, having to go through puberty again before taking on the form of an adult.

These people while at first appearing perfectly ordinary, are soon found to be dangerous as in their attempts to feel even some semblance of emotion they were left with after the procedure, are prone to, and have no moral qualms with engaging in vice and sometimes heinous crimes. Dubbed, the X syndrome, these people experience what can psychologists described as a withdrawal symptom from an addiction to emotions, causing them to behave in dangerous ways, seeking out deadly and harmful situations just to stimulate what little remains of their emotions to feel anger or hurt, even pleasure and joy.

9AE, with no other option, the Governments of the world labelled them Exiles and began quarantining them in the very bunkers humanity finally escaped from, in an attempt to prevent and in some cases rehabilitate those that suffer from X syndrome using what various institutions described as psychological rewiring. More plainly, brainwashing.

In Japan, an island off the coast of Hokkaido called Rebun island is used to hold the Exiles quarantined and isolated from the outside world. They will, to the public knowledge, remain and reside in the enclosure for life.

In 21AE, there is a new inhabitant of the Exile district. An ordinary high school boy finishing his university entrance exams. Now she is one of them.
