“Then what about you?” Lucius asks, bringing her attention back to him.

“Me?” She asked, confused.

“You always pretend as though there isn’t anything in this world that can shake you, but that isn’t true. When you told me about your identity, it seemed as if you wanted me to kill you. But the truth is, you fear death more than anything. Why?”

“Who knows...I've already long forgotten.”

As a Princess, it was necessary for her to hide her emotions. The nobles that looked at her with lust or disdain for her and her Mother being a Witch, and the students who pointed and talked about her behind a back...she returned them all with a smile. She put on a mask, and over the years, it naturally became a part of her.

And yet the emotions inside her swirled endlessly, restlessly.

Scared of dying? Of course, she was. Who wasn't? But she was tired of all the guilt that wanted to crush her. Now that she no longer had to run, how should she live? The correct way to live, she didn't know how.

Revenge? What was the point now that they were all dead?

“What about earlier with the High Priest? You were laughing.”

“He was just telling me a joke.”

'About you.'

She didn't say the last part out loud.

“If that's so...” He put both hands on the wall behind her, trapping her inside. “Then don’t show that expression to anyone. Don’t laugh.”

Aurora pursed her lips. “How unreasonable.”

As Lucius was leaning towards, he locked his gaze with her. Just as she thought he was about to kiss her, he stopped. He grabbed her hand and pulled her forward.

When Aurora wanted to ask him what was wrong, she sensed it.

Killing intent and bloodlust.

The alley that had a few people dressed in rags here and there were gone.

In their place, several men with vulgar grins came out from their hiding places holding various weapons. The man standing in front, who was seemingly the leader, was holding a short spear. He whistled as he stared at Aurora with unconcealed lust in his eyes, just as the others.

Lucius stepped in front of Aurora, hiding her from their view.

The leader snorted. “Men, get rid of the obstruction, and we’ll get a taste of something nice tonight.”

"Awooooo!" Hearing their leader, the other men growled like wild wolves, who were close to catching their prey.

"Hey, don't make so much noise." A man standing by the leader said with a frown. He seemed to be different from the others. He wasn't holding a weapon and only had on glasses.

Another chuckled and spoke up. "What are you worried about? With the festival tonight, no one's gonna hear us!"

His eyebrows scrunched in annoyance. “Just remember not to get too close to him and fight him from a distance.”

Hearing what he said, Lucius focused more on their actions.

Aurora didn’t shriek in fright.

Instead, she did something very unexpected.

She lifted her right leg and placed her foot on a crate, the heels of her shoes make a clacking sound. With a smile on her face, she lifted her dress in a seductive manner revealing her bare skin.

Seeing this feast for the eyes, some men drooled while the others clapped their hands. They completely lost their focus on the main task. Even the leader laughed in joy. He thought the girl was wise and knew that the man next to her couldn't protect her from them.

Unfortunately for him, he was wrong.

Aurora, without a single waste of movement, took out a small knife concealed from a leather strap on her ankle.

She threw it at the leader and it hit his hand. He screamed in agony and dropped the spear.

He yanked the dagger out and pointed at Aurora while yelling at the top of his lungs. “KILL THEM!”

Although Aurora wasn’t strong enough to use a sword or heavy weapons, she picked up on how to use throwing knives from a Witch who had the ability to see the past.

At first, she wasn't very good at it. Until she realized she needed custom knives to work for her. As someone on the run in the past, she was able to use this skill as much as she would have liked to. After all, how often can a fugitive get their hands on a weapon, let a lone customized weapons?

This time, she didn't have a chance to request custom knives from the Duke. So she secretly searched for knives in the kitchen during night time. She thought about trying to find daggers from the Knights, but those daggers were heavy and uselessly adorned with decorations. Aurora decided that her best bet were small lightweight knives.

As she thought, without a specially crafted dagger, she wouldn't be able to hit her target. What she aimed for was head, but instead, it hit his hand. Still, she didn't think she'd hit her opponent at all. Maybe it was thanks to having this young, and nourished body of hers again.

With this, she'd be able to somewhat protect herself again.

The steps were simple.

Aurora pulled out another knife.

One. Find a grip that you're comfortable with using your dominant hand.

Two. Angle the knife and adjust based on the distance between you and your target.

Three. Assume the proper stance by placing your weight on your dominant leg and raising your arm in front of you. With enough experience, you'll eventually be able to throw the knife with accuracy from any stance.

Four. Swing the knife and release it. Don't force any strength in it, and just allow it to slip from your hand.

The men all rushed towards Lucius and Aurora when hearing their leader's order.

"You bi**h!" A man yelled.

"She hurt our leader. Get her!!" Another screamed.

“Wait!” The man who didn't have a weapon with him tried to stop them. “Don’t approach him carelessly…” However, before he could finish his sentence, a knife came hurling his way.

The small weapon in Aurora’s hand released, hitting her next target in the leg. “AAAHHHH!!!” The man dropped to the ground.

Aurora pulled three more knives out, intending on throwing it again, but Lucius pushed her back. “Don’t move.”

The oncoming men showed no sign of stopping. Before they could reach the Duke or her, a fully black-cloaked person appeared out of nowhere. Kept hidden underneath the elegant looking black cloak, the person's appearance, let alone gender, couldn't be discerned. he only noticeable thing was that the black-robed person was wearing brown sandals, and their height was around 155 cm.

The cloaked person skillfully dealt with the men with their two long daggers, but before they could get some rest, the leader gave out a sharp loud whistle.

A larger group appeared from inside.

Who knew there were more men hidden inside?!

Lucius started to doubt that these people were ordinary. Then, it can only mean they were using Aurora as a reason to assassinate him. Only a very few knew of her existence, so there was no reason she’d be their target.

“Fie, leave one alive,” Lucius called out to the fully cloaked.

“Understood, Master.” Their voice was soft and undistinguishable between female or male. Fie continued killing the men one by one, a flash of red eyes could be seen from behind the cloak. The clashing of weapons rose one after the other.

Even though they all had runes, it was only the most basic one. Commoners usually only have runes that allow them to activate rune inscriptions for their daily activities. If they were to fight against a Shadow Knight based on just their strength, there was no way for them to keep their lives.

Just then, Aurora’s foresight warned her of a fast approaching arrow from behind them. She couldn’t react in time beyond a single glance backward. With strength she didn’t know she had, she pushed Lucius with all her might.

Not anticipating this, the Duke fell to the ground just in time to avoid the incoming arrow.
