Chapter 39: Chest and pet

Alastair spotted one of those odd red chest tucked into a small alcove fifty feet up the side of the surrounding mountainous walls. "i want that." he said before jogging over to the mountain wall in question and after seeing the rough and misshapen rock walls begins to pull himself up. the group watched on as alastair pulled himself up the mountain face in smooth motions reminding them of a gecko. it took alastair ten minutes to reach the alcove that had the chest that had a thin layer of dust covering it proving that it had sat up here for a while.

Alastair pulled out a pickaxe from his satchel and with might swings began to carve out the area around the alcove until it was large enough to camp out on. satisfied alastair staked the floor of the alcove and tied a flax rope to it before tossing the rope over the side and motioning for the group to climb up. erik and sylvando climbed the rope without hesitation and erisa changed into her dragon form and flew up before shrugging at the looks the group gave her.

The twins however made it clear that they lacked the physical strength need to climb up so alastair pulled the rope up and made a loop of the end before throwing it back down. serena stood on the loop and alastair pulled her up by lifting the rope hand over hand. when he threw the rope down for veronica he had an evil grin as with a great pull he sent veronica rocketing upwards where he caught her before she started to fall. veronica was furious but alastair couldn't stop laughing to really care. the rest of the group also laughed at veronica including serena since it was a harmless prank.

The group set up camp since the sun was starting to go down before they gathered around the chest were erik was picking the lock. after five minutes of deft hand movements the lock opened with a resounding "click". "lets hope for something good." alastair said under his breath and the rest of the group could only agree. grabbing the sides of the lid erik pulled the chest open revealing its contents. inside the chest were three items , the first an unusual egg the size of a football with a creamy white color and golden swirls all over it.

The second item was a mages staff that was a rod of an unknown green metal with a huge sapphire held in a metal claw at the top. this went to veronica since she was the only one who could use it effectively. the final item though was a roll of parchment that depicted an island in detail with one area having a circle with an x through it. "a treasure map from the look of it." erik said calmly. "i think i have seen an island like this on the world map let me check." alastair said before opening the world map.

Looking around the edges of the continent alastair found the island in question at the top right corner. "island centralis , this is the one here." he said pointing at it for the rest of the party. "we will need to keep it in mind when we travel in that area in the future." alastair said before putting away the maps. the party then turned their attention towards the unknown egg "so does anyone know what to do with this thing?" erik asked while looking at the egg confused. no one in the party spoke up making it clear none did.

After fussing with the egg for a few more minutes the party gave up and let serena keep it since she found it adorable. the party turned in for the night with the girls laid out next to each other in their own bedrolls with serena cuddling the egg against her chest. the next day the party all woke up at the same time since the egg serena was holding seemed to have shattered. a quick check of the camp revealed a large pearl white lizard with golden lines all over it and small featherless wings curled up in serena's bedding.

Serena held the foot long fluffy thing that seemed more upset at being woken up than being held. this was proved do to the odd whirring sound the thing let out before digging into serenas top and adjusting itself with its head poking out between her cleavage and falling asleep again. the entire party stared at the creature and by extension serenas cleavage which made her extremely embarrassed. "can someone tell me what in erdrea that thing is?" alastair asked confused. "i have never seen or heard of anything like it in the entire arborian library." veronica said.

"Whatever it is it seems pretty friendly at the least." sylvando said thankful. "you think it might have imprinted on serena?" alastair asked seriously. "it is entirely possible since she was likely the first thing it saw after hatching." veronica said honestly. "ok but the most important question is does anyone know what it eats?" alastair asked seriously. the party ended up waving all manner of things in front of the creatures face to see what it eats before getting a response from using a fresh fish alastair had preserved in his bag.
