Chapter 42: Bug squashing and dundrasil

The cave was covered in an uncomfortable amount of extremely large spider webs that made alastair hope deeply that this wasn't an arachnophobia type situation. thankfully for alastair he soon dismissed that idea due to the variety of monsters that roamed in the cave system. the party plus rab searched all over the cave system that seemed to double back on itself more than once before they found a spot with lit braziers. beyond that was a short hallway that looked to belong to some sort of ruins that had a large stone door at the end of it.

Pushing the door open the group entered with their weapons drawn into the cavern stealthily. they were just in time to hear the conversation between a massive spider monster and surprisingly vance. jade was apparently faking being unconscious as she quickly stood up from the ground which was the groups que to show up. the short conversation was just like in the game however this time alastair told vance that there is always another way besides the one he chose. vance passed out from whatever that vile potion he had been drinking had damaged in him before the group started to fight.

Alastair took the lead by approaching the monster apparently called arachtogon with metal bane leaning against his right shoulder. the monster made the mistake of thinking he was an easy target and tried to grab alastair with one of its hands. with a flash of movement alastair sliced the offending limb into multiple pieces. arachtogon screamed in pain before backing away in fear as an oppressive red aura surrounded alastair who didn't stop his slow walk forward. the rest of the group minus rab and jade didn't see any reason to intervein and were having a conversation with a confused rab and jade.

Arachtogon could tell that he had made a huge mistake by provoking the human in front of him the sheer oppression directed at him was proof enough of this. "waitz for a moment pleaz" he begged in his odd accent. alastair raised an eyebrow but stopped to hear what the monster had to say. "whyz muzt your kill me? i will leave if you juzt zpare my life." arachtogon tried to persuade alastair fearfully. alastair rubbed his chin as though in thought before veronica cut in "didn't you learn not to play with your food?" she asked teasingly.

Alastair looked back at her with a sigh "you are just no fun at all you know that." he said with an amused grin. arachtogon immediately realized that alastair was messing with him and decided to fight it out rather than roll over and die. with a mighty roar he charged at alastair who sighed before seeming to vanish only to appear behind arachtogon who froze before falling into two halves and dissipating in corrupted mana. alastair then joined the rest of the party in rescuing the people caught in the hanging cocoons around the cavern.

The party separated from rab and jade after making sure the people recued were going to be alright. the next day was the awarding ceremony for the champion position in the tournament which meant that alastair had to get up for it again. the following events followed the game with the reinbow being stolen by rab and jade and vance showing the crowd that he was noting without that potion in a winner takes all fight with alastair. the party left octagonia with the yellow orb that was the second place prize for the ruins of dundrasil that rab said to go to in the letter he left in place of the reinbow.

The trip took the better part of an entire day before they reached the ruins of the castle of dundrasil. veronica pointed out the lit braziers past some rubble that they got past thanks to a non aggressive slime that told them about the secret passage in the well. they found rab waiting for them alone in the castle ruins were the events played out in the same way as in the game with the reveal that he was alastairs biological grandfather before being shown the tombstone of his parents.

After that jade showed up and said that the preparations were done which rab thanked her as a princess. the group caught that and immediately made the connection between her and a certain king. the following events were just like in the game with alastair partaking in a royal drasillian rite to send to souls of the dead to Yggdrasil. after that alastair caught up with jade who told him about the night dundrasil fell before the two soon notice heliodoran soldiers with torches and they decided to catch up with the others only to get cut off by hendrick.

Unlike in the game were hendrick over powered the luminary in a head on clash alastair easily fended off hendrick. not only did alastair match hendrick he man handled him violently making sure to break a few of his bones in the process including hendrick's left leg. before he could finish off hendrick jade stopped him and the two escaped the rest of their pursuit after alastair berated hendrick for the evil committed against the innocents of cobblestone. the two caught up with the rest of the party and rab who officially joined the party along with jade.
