It’s currently lunchtime. The five of us who were always together are sitting at the table munching our food, in the middle of us eating our food, the majority of the people who were looking at us were fewer than the past few days which gave me a sigh of relief. I don’t know if I could keep up with the gazes toward me all day long.
With the number of people eating in the cafeteria now, it became crowded more than usual. After finishing our food, I and the others went for a walk with how much time we still have before the 5th period and a good way to burn the foods that we had consumed. We are currently outside of the student building leisurely, walking near the garden. Arima and I were at the back, while in front of us were the girls. The three were talking about a bunch of stuff. Meanwhile, as for Arima and me.
“Okita, what help do you want me to do?”
“Oh... About that... It’s about your childhood friend, Ide-san...”
“Aoi?”
“Yeah... You see...”
Then I proceed to tell him every detail that I said earlier to Ide-san, which made me guilty, and I started thinking of a way to apologize to her. It’s been bugging me ever since earlier. Furthermore, the domineering attitude that I gave to her. That’s the major part where I want to apologize for the most. With Arima processing what I said, I became nervous about what he will say or he will do because he himself said that he liked her not as a friend but as an opposite gender. I don’t know what his reaction will why I became nervous.
“Oh, is that so…?”
“Huh—...?”
“You know... You got the wrong person to ask. Even though she said sorry to me earlier, that doesn’t mean we are good now. If I were you, just confront her instead of asking for help. I do not know if she’s willing to talk to me or even request to meet you. It will be only an awkward interaction. So, deal with it yourself.”
Arima chuckled, which bewildered me.
“I thought you’re going to get angry.”
“The fuck?! Why would I get angry over that simple matter?”
“What? That’s normal. I assumed stuff without even considering learning the whole story and scolded her.”
“Ahh... I see... Well, you admitted your mistakes, isn’t that enough? Getting angry over so simple is stupid.”
“I guess you’re right.”
“Unless you didn’t tell me that and didn’t admit your mistakes, I’m genuinely going to get angry at you. I hate people who are so prideful and stubborn who don’t admit to their mistakes, and especially liars.”
I made a goofy face while looking at Arima.
“Aren’t you in love with…?”
“Ironic isn’t it? Hahahahaha....”
“It sure is.”
Arima was laughing loudly that it made the girl in front of us turn around. I wryly smiled at them while shaking my head sideways. Afterward, we continued with our walk, and my conversation with Arima.
“By the way, Arima.”
“Hm? What is it?”, wiping out the tears from his eye.
“Are you really thinking that people around you have thoughts about you know… Suspecting you…?”
“Oh, if you are saying about the letter to me. Actually, none. But, the rumors still affected me.”
“In what way? I’ve been really curious about it”
“For the first few months, people are looking at me disgustingly. However, as time goes by, it got lessen mostly because I’m still here. It died out eventually, but there are still some people who are believing it.”
“Ah, I see... But, the majority of them knew you are innocent, right?”
“You could say so? If I’m one of the prime suspects, why would I still be here when the police made a blotter report about the actual suspect. And, they investigated, and they said I’m clear.”
“But, you said nothing to Ide-san nor even explain it.”
“I told you earlier, it’s better if she could vent it to me than a person whom she knew.”
“Aren’t you too...?”
“Too overprotective?”
“I mean that’s not really what I had in mind, but that works too.”
“Well, I’ll just tell simply. If I told her the real reason, what would she do? She would stick with me like she usually does. Because of the letter and rumors that are circulating around me, I don’t want her to be involved with me.”
“It definitely fits.”
I forgot… I said that to Ide-san earlier…
“Oh, Hahahaha..”
“If people are not looking the way they are to you like last time, why say that you’re a loner?”
“I’m a loner? I’m alone? What the hell do you want me to say? I’ve got people whom I can talk with like the people in my club or some classmates, but I treat them as acquaintances, not friends.”
“Oi, you totally lied to me when you said that you don’t have anyone to tell.”
“Pfft— That’s obvious.”
“Well, yeah... Okay, that’s on me.”

“Hell yeah, it should be.”
Then he continued, “But, don’t worry. I told you, your secret is safe with me. I hate backstabbers the most, that’s why I won’t do that to you. I experienced it myself. You’re more a better person than anyone I’ve met until this day.”
My face instantly turned towards Arima with eyes of astonishment. I was not expecting anything like that coming from Arima. Because of what he said, I became embarrassed by it, making my face flushed. That came out of nowhere!?
“Um... Thanks...?”
“Hahahaha, no problem.”
After walking a while, we are now walking back to our classroom. However, upon reaching the classroom, Nagasawa, Hara-san, and the little sister of the student council president Nishimura-san are all sitting together except for one person—Ide-san. She was sitting alone, though earlier I saw her coming to class with them, however seeing this, thought of mine emerge from my head. Is she taking my suggestions of following Arima’s warnings to her? Or perhaps she’s just feeling unwell?
With the chemistry class on our 5th period coming which we’ll be heading to the laboratory later, Naoki went to my desk and wasted her time showing me various stuff on her smartphone. Yuki wasn’t here because she’s in the other class. However, while walking back to our class earlier, she kept checking me or mostly asking me if I feel sick or something. In response to her worry, I said that I’m one hundred percent well and alive, and told her about Izumi-sensei’s text, to which she laughed. I do not know what’s funny about it; I tried asking her, but she didn’t give me any response and only continued laughing. What a weird thing to laugh at.
The sound of the bell rang throughout the school indicating that the 5th period had started, so all of us when ahead to the laboratory. We then got into 4 groups. The group that I was in has comprised the following people: Ide Aoi, Bando Kaede, Aoyama Tomatsu, and lastly, me. Only Ide-san was the only person whom I can say I’ve known, but for the other two... I don’t know them...
As a classmate, I’m probably the worst, but I really do not know who the two are. I’m not the type of person who always remembers people. On a side note, our lecturer for this period, Kida-sensei. He’s a middle-aged man with a family. Whenever I saw him there’s this feeling that I always feel to every middle-aged person, though I can’t pinpoint what that is.
With the four of us in a group, Ide-san was feeling uncomfortable near me as her actions say it all, plus the awkward atmosphere between us. Bando-san, the other girl beside Ide-san, she’s a lively one with short brown hair.
“Hello~ Please take care of me”
“Li-likewise...”, Ide-san said, stammering.
“Me, too.”
“Take care of me as well.”
The last guy who spoke was Aoyama-san, the other guy who was with us. He got a wavy black hair comb on the side of his head, which made me think that he’s from a rich family. I don’t want to judge his appearance but that’s what I’m really getting from him. Aoyama-san has been pretty well... Normal, not like those people that I have met the last few days.
I’m sitting beside Ide-san. While Ide-san on the other hand, she’s looks about to collapse at how nervous and uncomfortable she is, right now. I took the initiative to break the awkward atmosphere between us. Bando-san and Aoyama-san were quite far on the table.
“I apologize for earlier, Ide-san...”
Ide-san seems surprised by my sudden apology to her.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Well... Because of my irrationality, earlier. I’m sorry about that. I learned about the fact you tried really hard to talk to your friend during that time. I’m sorry...”
Ide-san’s eyes widen. I’m glad that the arrangement of the group was like this, and I was able to apologize to Ide-san. When sensei announced the arrangement, it bewildered me at how fate seems to be kind to me. I took that opportunity and got where I am right now.
Ide-san took a while before responding to me, as she’s still looking at me with a stunned expression. Then her mouth finally opened. She talked in a low audible voice like me.
“Um... I accept your apology and thank you for earlier. The words that you said to me made sense and ever since then, I’m giving a thought about all of it. But, I’m still confused...”
I was in bewilderment at hearing it. Ide-san was looking down on the table as she says all those stuff to me. The stubborn and childish behavior that Arima told me earlier was nowhere to be seen on Ide-san now, she’s now collecting all the information that I said earlier and thinking about it deeply. I got some goosebumps, remembering Arima’s gratitude earlier. Is this why Arima thanked me earlier? Did he know she will act like this? If so, I give Arima a huge thumbs up, that’s some amazing stuff.
Although, Ide-san confusion could correlate with what Arima said to me. Her stubbornness, maybe she’s unconsciously denying my words in her head and still grasping the truth that she created in her head while trying to understand what I said. Because of that, there are two forces repelling with each other. Then I remembered what Izumi-sensei told me.
“Try clearing your head. I’ve heard this saying, ‘Our mind is like water. When it’s turbulent, it’s difficult to see. However, when it’s calm, everything became clear.’. Relax and take your time, don’t rush it. It won’t leave you, nor it will leave you. If you really want to understand it, follow what I said—Clear your mind. That way you can easily, find the answer you are looking for.”
While I’m doing the task for our activity that Kida-sensei gave to us, I forgot that we’re still in the middle of the class. I blurted it out of my own accord. Kida-sensei who passing by our table heard that.
“That’s some wise words, Okita. Where did you learn that?”
I’m surprised by Kida-sensei, who was just right behind me, standing. He was looking at me with amazement and curiosity. In response, I said.
“Oh... Um, it’s the word that someone I knew always tells me whenever I have hard processing stuff in my head.”
“Interesting... You have some interesting fellow there, Okita. What if you’re in a fight with someone, what would you do?”
“Fight? Um... can you be more specific, sensei?”
“I mean, you’re in a verbal argument. Like you know, a disagreement.”
That took a wild turn of events. I was expecting Kida-sensei to scold me but instead; he asked me a question about a disagreement between both parties.
“Um, between two people?”
“Yeah, more so.”
“It depends... Every person has their own judgment of what is right and what is wrong.”
“How about this... Your person A and I’m person B. We had a disagreement about you person A going home late, then I, person B accused you of committing some illicit stuff behind my back. But, you, person A knew that you did nothing wrong. What would you do?”
I’m staring at Kida-sensei with dead-fish eyes. He’s clearly having some problems with his wife or something, this is not something you should ask a student. You’re clearly older than me and you have a lot more experience than me. I’ve got a feeling that sensei won’t stop asking me questions until he’s satisfied with my answer, so I took the quick route.
“Um... Sensei, if you are having trouble with your wi—”
“Hypothetical question.”
Okay... This is more troublesome than I initially thought…
