Looking back at the clearing, a strange feeling of restlessness mixed with hunger was coupled together, and I could spot a pile of items in the distance near its edge that seemed to be drawing my attention. Shrugging to myself, I kneeled once more and drank deeply from the water of the river.

I could make myself sick for all I knew, but going by the headache that was just barely leaving me now, I could tell my options were only to drink, or it would get worse.

Standing back up, I began walking towards the items around the edge of the wood line.

The closer I got, the shapes came through clearly. Some sort of bag, like a satchel, perhaps? And a sword.

Christ, this thing was big, looking over the sword that seemed like it’d been dragged out of the woods. The thing was clearly longer than I was tall. If I had to estimate a length, it had to be at the least a-hundred-forty-two or forty-seven centimeters long……Wait, I’m barely a hundred-thirty centimeters right now?!

I grimaced as I stood the sword on the tip of its sheath. As I brought it up straight, it was clearly taller than me for sure. It looked like some sort of Claymore or highland sword now that I was looking it up and down. It was quite heavy in these hands.

Looking back to the ground, the draglines pointed back to where I had awoken, and only my own footprints from what I could see were in either direction.

This sword wasn’t mine, was it? I’m so small compared to it.

I looked over the sword for a moment before setting it down. Looking at the satchel next, I opened it and dumped out its contents.

There was a book with some kind of writing on it and some weird runes from what it looked like. They looked like a mix of Nordic and Greek runes. The fact I could even make them out was a miracle. For some reason, they clicked but understanding their origin was as far as it went.

Then recognizing them, I could see a clearly written name that I thought I could pronounce, but I wasn’t sure.

“Ki-yo-mi…Kiyomi” Why does that sound familiar?

*DING* As if on cue, a small *ding* sound popped in my ears along with a yellowish/orange half-transparent window just in front of me.

“What?” I was perplexed. Is reality really that far out of place for me that this was happening now? Ahhh, I must be dreaming in a hospital bed or something.

In front of me, there really was a window reminiscent of some game system.

Notification: Acquired- Personal Diary, Matriarchs Sword(Bonded)

Apparently, the book and sword are both my own?

Return to the status screen?

Yes?

I thought to respond, and it actually moved to a screen displaying general information. I was caught off guard for a moment before I began reading it.

Warning: Status: Hungry, Hunted

“Hunted?”

I had not meant for it to happen, but another window popped up with a description of the hunted status.

Hunted: The church of Orion is hunting you, Paladin’s nearing detection range.
Presented course: Evade and escape the Church Paladins, seek safety.

!!!

That’s disconcerting….

And now I have an alert telling me I need to find safety. I don’t need to be a genius to see that I’m in danger.

I placed the Diary back into the satchel and put it on, grabbing the sword as I stood, and used it to hold myself up.

I looked around for a second, double-checking the clearing if I had missed anything. Turning towards the trail, exiting the clearing at a brisk pace, and placing the sword over my shoulders to give myself the easiest carry possible, I started to walk.

……

It had been a few hours since I started walking, from what I could tell. The sun went from the center of the sky to the right of the path, so It must be nearing mid or late afternoon.

*gggrrble*

“Ugh”

It’d been long enough since I’d woken that I found myself suffering hunger pains. I had already figured that it would happen, but it happening when I had to evade someone actively was a pain. It would make it harder to escape or survive.

I had given up fighting. The only thing I have is too large and unwieldy for me to use anytime soon.

The only option I had was to keep moving, really, and this body’s inexperience was showing. I wasn't tired; the energy was there, but the physical burn of my muscles and lungs were getting to me.

My hunger and thirst status were in constant decline—nothing terrifying but fast enough to make me keep my pace in mind.

“Ugh, why can’t I have woken up in a soft bed or something like that. I had to wake up in the middle of nowhere?” I wiped my brow as I continued my pace. The sweat covering my whole body at this point.

The temperature wasn’t unbearably hot, but I was walking out of the shadowed tree line and had already been walking long enough for it to no longer matter.

As I was complaining to myself, the window returned with some pretty shit news.

Alert: Paladins of Orion approaching position at a quickened pace. Seek shelter or protection! Do not engage!

As if on cue for my complaints to be as poorly timed as possible, I found myself beginning to panic.

I heard some yelling in the distance. I couldn’t make it out, but hearing it alone was enough for me to know that shit got real very quickly.

So I did what I could…

I darted.
