Chapter 12: It’s Bigger on the Inside
“Here.” The next day, Laius handed Nara a skill book that read The Way of the Traveler.

Chelsea added an explanation for Laius’ skill book selection. “It’s a combat skill book focused on a variety of weapon handling and movement techniques. It includes combat styles for both monsters and people. There’s a variety of combat styles in there; anywhere from tricky, rapid styles to a straightforward aggressive style. You have a lot of damage avoidance and negation, so focusing on pure mastery of the basics may be your best approach. Skill books provide the knowledge to perform a variety of techniques, but you’ll have to practice to master them.”
“You may want to sit down to use it.” Amara said.
Nara conjured a chair made from the astral and sat down on it. When she ranked up to iron, her Astral Domain ability had gained a new effect.
-------
Racial Ability: [Astral Domain]
The effects of this ability will change upon ranking up.

Since the chair had been made of the astral, its physical properties did not have to match reality. The chair looked ordinary but was extremely comfortable, and she could change the feedback and support of the chair with just a thought.
Laius and Chelsea shared a disgruntled look at her action.
“Nara.”
“Yes?”
“Is that a chair made of the astral.”
“Yup.”
“Since when could you do that?”
“Yesterday. I can also do this.” Nara manifested an iconic blue telephone booth beside her. “It’s bigger on the inside.”
“Is it.”
“Yup.”
Chelsea did not recognize the strange blue box, but she strode over and opened the door, but did not go inside. As Nara said, the inside of the box did not match the dimension of the outside. The inside was a comfortable and airy living room with a kitchen attachment and bar seating. The décor was of soft and natural hues, vibrant plants, and drapes from the veranda blew gently in the breeze.
The interior of the box looked innocuous and comforting, but Chelsea felt a warning within her soul. Her soul felt danger. Frowning, Chelsea decided to shelve the unusual and strong warning for later examination.
“That’s not reality, is it.”
Nara noticed; it wasn’t a question.
“Nope.”
Chelsea stood, hands on hips, awaiting an additional explanation.
“The size I can manifest in reality is limited, but I can make the inside as big as I want. Great travel options abound!” Nara snapped finger guns. “I can make vehicles too, but the speed is relative to my rank. Still faster than running though. Not that I mind running now.”
“That’s not the explanation I wanted.”
Sheepishly, Nara responded, “My Astral Domain ability got a new effect when I ranked up.”
“Oh?”

“Yup.” With a hesitant pause, Nara added, “Should I not use it around others?”
“No, its fine to do so.” Chelsea said, furrowing her brow. “I only knew it was the astral since I knew about your abilities beforehand. It has a façade of physical reality. Dimensional space abilities that are larger on the inside are not unusual, and it otherwise looks as if you are accessing your inventory.”
With a contemplative thought, Chelsea added another piece of advice, “Consider not letting others approach too closely. Those that are high rank in particular, like gold and above.”
“Roger roger.” Nara said, saluting Chelsea.
“How nonsensical.” Chrome snorted from the side, sitting in a similarly manifested astral chair, munching on a plate of delicacies provided by Laius.
“You eat? Since when?”
“You can’t expect me to chaperone you in physical reality without some sort of enjoyment? Compliments to the chef.”
Nara de-manifested the astral chair beneath Chrome.
He easily held himself up with only his legs in his sitting position.
“You think I’m that easy?”
After she had received her casual clothing from Amara and Chelsea, Nara had also experimented with her Astral Domain ability then. Even without the new added effect, she had been able to manifest clothes directly onto her body and off in an instant by wrapping her body in a thin membrane of the astral. She could also manifest objects the same way, but preferred reaching in to access small objects for the novelty of it. Additionally, she could only remove and store objects within a short distance of her body. She could manifest her Astral Domain within her perception range, and it would remain where she left it no matter her distance to it. She could additionally recall her Astral Domain regardless of distance.

[Use The Way of the Traveler? Y/N?]
Upon selecting ‘yes’, the thick book flew open and the words within shimmered and flew into the air, creating a vortex around her. More and more words gathered, increasing the vortex in strength and density. Finally, the book dropped powerlessly to the floor, drained of magic and knowledge, and the vortex reached its apex. The words then funneled into Nara’s body.
This provoked an extremely unpleasant sensation. She could feel the words change her mind, her soul, etching knowledge in their place. She was suddenly acutely aware that she had once again added to her soul in some permanent way without fully understanding the ramifications or effects. She gritted her teeth as the knowledge continued to push inside of her, filling her mind with information she could not process quickly enough. She gasped and leaned over in her chair, feeling detached from her body, as she waited for the event to pass.
“Are you alright?” asked Chelsea, kneeling next to her.
“Yeah just… that was a lot.” Nara closed her eyes, waiting for the internal pressure to dissipate.
“It is an extremely thorough skill book.” Chelsea said. “Usually, it does not feel quite so intense.”
Laius gently pried open her curled fists and plunked a candy into it. Without a thought, she popped it into her mouth, enjoying the sweet and unique flavor.
“Come to think of it, I don’t even know what these are made of.”
“No,” Laius chuckled, “You don’t.”
Nara had a decidedly strong stomach, but she suddenly felt it was better not to ask.
She still ate it, of course.
