A cold wind blew down the street as we were heading toward the portal square. The job was in Arcby, the current ‘high sun’ city – two portals over, or so Arina said. I still hadn’t figured out everything about how these portals and cities worked. At the same time I didn’t want to appear clueless by asking dumb questions.
The job was to kill whatever moved in the catacombs below the city. This included giant rats, various undead, and gators. She said we wouldn’t be the only group down there.
“You’re not skittish about blood, are you?” Arina asked.
“No, why do you ask?” I said.
“No, no reason, really. All’s well. Where are you staying?”
I shrugged. “Just got here, don’t have a place yet. Need some coin first.”
She smirked. “Drank it all away, did you?”
“No, I don’t drink … much.”
Arina scoffed. “Is that right? How come?”
“Because I like to be in control,” I said.
“You surprise me. That’s the first time I heard that answer.”
“Can you recommend a place?”
“I’m staying with Summer at the Ragas. The place has a roof. It’s a dirty warehouse really. Five silver a night, but it sure beats sleeping in the park.”
We walked past the long line of wagons formed up before the portal. I felt a bit excited about going through one. What would it feel like? The guards before the portal didn’t pay much attention to the people walking. They did hasty inspections of the goods in the wagons.
I could see through the portal to the other side, as if it was a doorway. The only thing setting it apart was a subtle shimmer at the surface. I could see two suns. One higher up in the portal and one here, but much lower.
Without stopping, we walked right through. I felt the warm air hit my face, and the sky grew brighter. The weather was exceptionally pleasant. At the same time, this city felt the same as far as architecture and all the bamboo vegetation. Similar people, and similar noise.
I spotted movement above us. I craned my neck up to see a multitude of flying crafts high above. From such a distance, they looked like dandelion parachutes. They littered the sky. A thousand of them.
“What are those?” I asked, pointing up.
“You haven’t see the wind-folk before?” Summer replied.
I shook my head.
“They chase the sun on the easterly wind, always staying in the autumn of the cycle. Sometimes they come down to trade.”
“That’s amazing,” I said.
“I’d love to go up in the sky someday, but I’m not very good when it comes to heights so … maybe not.”
I didn’t have time to gawk for very long. We moved right through to the next portal, a hundred feet ahead. This time it was different. It’s like we entered a sauna, full of hot and humid air. The sun glared down on us from above, blasting us with heat.
Summer loosened her tunic at the collar. I wiped beads of sweat from my forehead. We turned off from the path leading to the next portal, and instead took the street heading north.
“These creatures in the catacombs,” I said. “Are they more or less dangerous than grublings?”
“Grublings? Why the hell were you hunting them for?” Arina asked.
I gestured to Dandee. “I was picking up my buddy in the swamp.”
“Really? Well, it’ll be about the same, maybe even easier. Depends on how many we come across at once, don’t it?”
Arina carried a mean looking flared mace and a heater shield, while Summer had a staff of gnarled wood. I had to dull the edges of my star while I carried it, or otherwise I was likely to cut myself, or someone next to me. It was the same deal for the spikes on the tower shield.
“That’s a strange looking weapon you got there.” Arina asked. “Never seen the sort before. How do you even use it?”
I knew I couldn’t hide my abilities for long. It was either that, or never use them at all and what would be the point of that? How would I even feed myself? Also, there’s no way I was the only one with Ferromancer and Chronomancer spells in this world. Regardless, it was a risk I had to take.
“You’ll see soon enough,” I said.
We still had some dried fish to eat for another couple of moons, and I had refilled my canteen at the local well. I figured I could stay awake for another twelve hours or so before needing to crash.
I also had some ideas on how to make money by crafting and selling steel weapons and armor. The dwarven smith at the blacksmith shop used Shape Iron just like me, and I could probably do the same. If that didn’t work out, there was still the matter of my Bounty Hunter profession.
“Do you know of a good place to get some steel?” I asked.

“Sure. Clearing out the undead at sun rise,” Arina said. “You must have done that a few times before, right?”
“Yeah, of course.” I lied. “I just thought you might know a better place.”
“We can do it in a few moons if everything goes well here.”
We turned a street, followed a long white-washed wall, then passed through cast-iron gates into a cemetery. It was built up high and full of crypts. Arina lead us to the central one. The door to it was already open. We walked right through and down the steps, heading deep underground.
It was great to get out of the sun. I was soaked through with sweat. A cool, damp draft whistled through the stair well with earthy scent. The noise from the street faded away.
Summer knocked the butt of the staff against the ground and the staff’s tip started glowing. She raised it high to shed light for everyone.
“That’s neat. Does the staff do anything else?” I asked Summer.
“No, I wish it did, okay? Sadly this is all it does. It’s a simple staff of radiant light that Arina bought for me after I saved her life. Though, I would love to get me a fire damage staff, or-or a cast speed staff. Or better yet, one that has both, or even three attributes. Could you imagine that?”
“You saved her life?” I asked.
Summer beamed. “More than once actually, and she had saved my life once too. We make for great friends, we had known each other for many years. Ever since-”
“Two,” Arina said. “Two years.”
“Two? No, that can’t be-” Summer blinked her eyes. “Okay, maybe it was two, two and half. At least.”
We came out to a wide corridor. The walls were stone made with moss growing in the patches where water dripped down from the ceiling. With extra space around us, I sharpened the blades of my star back to their former glory. I animated it and let it hover next to me.
Summer’s eyes went wide. She gasped. “It-It’s floating!”
“Mhm. Is that bad?”
“N-No, but … I never seen that before. Is it alive?”
“Alive? I don’t think so. It’s animated.”
Arina stopped and looked at the star with narrowed eyes. “How’d you do that?”
“Magic? It’s just a spell.”
“What’s it called?”
“I’d tell you, but can you keep it a secret?”
“Alright, but I don’t understand the need for secrecy. Does it use souls or something?”
“Souls? Goodness no. I just thought … never mind. It’s called Animate Iron, and it uses mana like any spell, I suppose. That’s all.”
Arina shrugged. “So you just … how do you use it?”
I spun up the star, moved it from side to side.
Summer clapped her hands. “Ahhh! That’s amazing!”
Arina grinned. “The rats will love it. What class did you say you were again?”
“Vanguard.”
Arina pursed her lips, unhappy at my vague answer. “Fine. What else can you do?”
“A thing or two more. How often can you heal and for how much?”
“Once every ten minutes, and it heals for two hundred and fifty. So what else are you capable of? If we’re going to work together here, we can’t be hiding stuff from each other. Our very lives depend on it.”
“You’re right,” I said. “That’s fair. I get it.”
I animated the tower shield, floated it over to me. They watched in amazement as I shaped sharp spikes across the surface. With both the star and the shield animated, it left both of my hands free. I needed to obtain some sort of a weapon, or perhaps another shield. Especially if I was acting in the vanguard role.
“Oh, wow. I never seen a smith that wasn’t a dwarf,” Arina said and handed me her flared mace. “Could you sharpen the edges up a bit please?”
