Arina had a list of kills to her name too, but it was short. It only contained two names. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. This world was savage. A wild west. Cowboys, sheriffs and robbers. Bloodthirsty monsters, undead too. I could only imagine the horrors I still hadn’t seen or heard about.
A few kills on the list could just be par for the course in this world. I was here a few moons and already racked up five kills without breaking a sweat. In this kind of a world I would have felt much better with my 1911 sidearm instead of a sword. Or even better, a SCAR.
“How much would you charge to stay at your library?” I asked. “I need a place to sleep and to eat. For Dandee too.”
“That depends, okay?” Arina replied. “Are you good at fixing stuff? The library needs some work as you can tell.”
I chuckled. “It needs more than just ‘some.’ It needs a lot.”
She sighed. “Okay, maybe this one does, but the other one isn’t so bad.”
“I’d love to help,” I said. “I’ll make some tools, we’ll buy some materials and in time, we’ll have it fixed up. Just don’t ask me to write all the books.”
She laughed. “You can write?”
I grinned. “Oh, you better watch out. I have written a mean poem or two in my life.”
We arrived at the city hall just north of the market square. A grand building with columns standing on columns. It was columns all the way up. Chiseled stone, arches and marble statues.
The map was a solid steel slab showing perfectly detailed streets with names and landmarks. Someone with Shape Iron must have created it. It stood upright by the side of the city hall. A small group of people were gathered around it, pointing fingers and chatting.
“Do you really think that talking to the relatives would help you find the killer?” Arina asked.
“Maybe, but it’s a good place to start,” I replied. “We can try your contacts if it doesn’t work out.”
I noted the location on the map. It would be another lengthy walk, but I loved walking anyway. It cleared my mind. The city didn’t have cars or trolleys. Just wagons and carriages, people on horseback too. However, with the streets crowded, nobody was moving fast, horse or not. You’d think with all the magic and spells they’d be flying, or at the very least have flying carpets, or something? Nope.
The bounty of eighty crowns was out for a man with a nickname of ‘Hillside Butcher.’ Azure ranked. Dead or alive. I preferred dead. The dead didn’t yell, bite, spit, kick, or refuse to move.
The records tome had listed off seven victims, all in Hillmoor. All women. Young. Only one victim had a family listed. A husband. I knew a few statistics when it came to that.
We stopped before a stone made building. Metal bars on the lower windows included flower planter boxes. More flowers flowed out the windows on the second floor windows too. To be sure, I checked the number and street to what I had written in my notebook. I walked up three steps to the wooden door and banged on it.
“Keep him occupied and talking,” I told Arina.
“Why? What for?”
“I’ll need to take a look around the place, see what I could find.”
“Uhm, okay?”

The door opened slow and narrow. A sleepy face looked out from the dark interior past him. He squinted his eyes.
“Yes?” he asked.
“We’re looking for Osoric, would that be you?” I asked.
He nodded. “What’s this about?”
“Your late wife. We’re trying to locate the sus- I mean Hillside Butcher. Can we come in?”
He started pull back. “I-I uhm .. maybe another day?”
I reached forward to stop him from closing the door. “It’ll only take a minute. Don’t you want the killer brought to justice?”
He hesitated, looked from me to Arina. “Uhm, sure, sure. Come in.”
I stepped inside after him, Arina followed. Bunches of herbs hung down the sides of the wall from the ceiling. They gave off a strong scent, almost medicinal. Perhaps he worked as an apothecary, or a herbalist? All the windows had thick curtains, tightly closed.
Did he work at odd hours? Had we caught him sleeping? It made me wonder when people slept. Were there set hours that everyone agreed to? Maybe right after the solar eclipse? So far the streets had been busy at all times.
Arina made small talk with him. She asked about the details I already had written in the notebook. He didn’t mention any new information. The Brotherhood wasn’t as thorough and detailed as I would have liked. But, they weren’t completely incompetent either.
The living quarters were tiny. Maybe 500 square feet? It was nothing compared to the houses I was familiar with. This place didn’t haveluxury of a living room, dinning room, or a family room.
I let my eyes adjust to the dim setting. The tiny kitchen had a simple table, chair and cast iron oven. The only other room had a rough looking bed, wardrobe, and crates again. Many of them. It made sense, everyone was about to leave the city and portal to another one.
I scanned in search of an urn or some container that would be used to hold ashes. Maybe it was in the crate already?
I flipped aside a cover over a crate, then another. It contained an urn. I opened the lid and touched the ashes. An alarm rang out in my mind. I bolted up. The killer was in the area. Within a 1,000 feet.
“Hey, what are you doing?” he barked at me. “Don’t touch my items.”
“Relax I’m just-”
He pointed to the door. “Get out of my house! You’re no longer welcome.”
A minute must have passed. A long list scrolled into my view. I looked at it, then down at the names of seven victims written in my notebook.
Oh, you sneaky son of a bitch.
