We walked out of the Brotherhood headquarters, and I could barely make out the tip of the sun over the city walls to the west. The night was drawing close.
“I could really use a cup of coffee,” I said. “Is there a good cafe around here?”
Arina furrowed her brows. “Coffee? Why not a beer instead? Hmm?”
“They’re both good, but if I had to choose one drink for the rest of my life, it’d be coffee and cream.”
Arina scoffed. “Okay? There’s a place near by, but don’t complain if you don’t like it. I had only gone there for their pastries.”
I smiled. “Let’s go.”
We took the main street heading west. More activity had picked up on the streets. Wagon and carriages created traffic. People were yelling and shoving. A sense of urgency hung in the air. I felt it too. Arina tried handing me two crowns.
“We’ll split it evenly,” I said.
She could have kept the coins she had found at the hillside butcher’s place without saying a word. I wasn’t watching her carefully. But Arina was honest, and I liked that about people.
Arina tapped the coins to my chest. “No. You did all the work.”
“But you were with me. It was dangerous there.”
She laughed. “Dangerous? Yeah, okay. It was dangerous … for him.”
I chuckled. “You healed me too. I was taught to share, and to share fairly. Alright?”
She took one of the crowns and handed me sixteen silver. “I’ll buy you coffee, okay?”
I nodded. “Sounds good.”
We turned south down a narrow street. I could smell the cafe before I saw it. An almost nutty smell. It was a small place called Misha’s Cafe. A couple of tables stood outside with patrons sitting in cast-iron chairs.
Inside, the aroma of coffee was intoxicating. Out to the side, three cats lounged at various levels of a cat tree. Behind the counter a young woman with cat ears greeted us. Arina ordered a coffee with cream for me, and a couple of pastries for herself. We sat by a table near the cats. They ignored us.
“Have you met commander Brent before?” I asked Arina.
“No, but I heard of him. He’s retired now, and it’s probably why he sits in that office now. Word is that he was demoted from the royal services for theft, but I heard he uncovered something sinister going on among the royals.”
I nodded. “Yeah, that’s how it is.”
“How did you and Summer meet?”
She laughed. “It’s a funny story actually. I was coming home clearing out the crypts one day, and I heard this movement at the library, here on Hilmoor. So, I ready my mace and shield. I sneak in thinking there’s someone robbing me. Again. Instead I see this little girl eating out of my cooking pot. She saw me and freaked out. Blew out all the glass from the building, set the bookshelves on fire. It was a mess! I was running around like mad trying to put out the fires, burned my hands pretty bad.”
I chuckled. “It’s a good thing you can heal. It explains why the place looks like it does.”
“Mhm, she still hasn’t paid for the damages. But, she did save my life once or twice, so I uhm .. I don’t bring it up.”
“Do you have any family? Brothers, sisters?”
She shook her head, and her smile vanished. “No ... just me. Me and Summer now.”
“I’m sorry,” I said.
She shrugged. “What can you do, right?”
The hostess brought coffee with cream and pastries, placed them on the table before us. The two pastries looked like cheese danishes.
“You have had coffee before right?” I asked her. “It’s not like you never tried it?”
“Of course I did. It’s just not for me.”

“With cream?”
“Does it make a difference?”
I scoffed. “It’s a difference between drinkable and, an ash tray.”
She looked at me skeptically, reached forward and took my cup. She brought it up to her lips, sniffed it. “Smells the same.”
“Sure, but give it a taste.”
She blinked her eyes, took a small sip, then a bigger one. “Okay, okay. Uhm .. wow, you’re right.”
“I told you. Keep drinking, I’ll order myself another one.”
After an enjoyable break at the cafe, I needed to make some minor purchases. My t-shirt wasn’t cutting it. I needed something more serious, but I didn’t see it at the blacksmith. I needed a padded coat like the one Arina wore, and also some scraps of leather.
We stopped by an armorer. This shop had just what I needed. Padded coats, leather armor, and a bin full of scraps. I ended up purchasing a used padded coat for 80 silver, leather gloves for 30, and a few of low-quality pieces of leather for 10.
On the way back to Arina’s library I had time to think, and Essence to spend. A whole 74,915 of it. The number on my hand hadn’t moved much but a few places. It probably had more to do with just staying alive than anything else. A few ahead of me must have died. I couldn’t tell if Arina had a change in rank. She always kept her gloves on.
An idea came to mind. What would happen if I upgraded my classes, but then backtracked if I didn’t like the results? The only problem was that it would leave me vulnerable for the next twenty-three hours while it came off cooldown. However, I wasn’t planning anything dangerous any time soon, so maybe it was worth the risk?
I had enough Essence for three upgrades. It made the most sense to upgrade Chronomancer and Ferromancer once each, as the cost was only 20k per upgrade.
It had been a good day, and I felt lucky. Especially after finding and taking out a serial killer to the tune of 80 crowns, or 8,000 silver. So, I started by upgrading Chronomancer first.
[Spell unlocked: [t2] Haste.]
[t2][Haste]
• Accelerates a target for a duration
• Acceleration Factor: 2
• Mana Cost: 250 mana
• Cast Time: 5 seconds
• Time limit: 5 min
• Cooldown: 60 minutes
Yes! Such a spell would be perfect in combination with Burst of Clarity. I didn’t like the long cast time on it though, but it looked like I could cast it on others beside myself. Next, I upgraded the Ferromancer.
[Additional Spell slot unlocked]
I smiled from ear to ear. “Woo!”
Arina looked at me strange. “What?”
“How rare is an additional spell slot?”
She narrowed her eyes. “Did you just get another one?”
“Maybe.”
“Lucky bastard.”
I decided that I shouldn’t push my luck any further, and saved the remaining Essence in case I needed it in a fight.
