Arina brought out a small keg of beer. She popped it open and passed mugs of beer to everyone. Dandee shared stips of dried salted fish that went well with the beer. I made a grill for the fireplace. Summer helped to light the charcoal. I grilled the t-bone steaks rubbed with salt and ground coffee beans over a bed of charcoal embers. The aroma was to die for. Everyone was hungry. Dandee had found some crates for us to sit on at the table.
“Stefan is back from the dead,” I said.
Arina nearly choked on a piece of meat, spoke with her mouth full. “You kidding?”
“And not just him, but his whole party too. Commander Brent called in the Silvers to take care of it. I’m going to help.”
“Me too!” Arina said.
“Oi mate, count me in. I need the essence.”
Summer raised her hand. “And me.”
“You do realize it’ll be dangerous?” I said. “They’re not just some mindless zombies.”
Arina dismissed it with wave of her hand. “It’ll be fine. The Silvers will take care of the biggest threat, and the rest of us will clean up the small fry. It’ll be a great. Easy essence and loot.”
“I hope you’re right.”
The steak was just what I craved, and everyone had seconds until nothing but bones remained. Afterward, I made some coffee for myself, passed the pastries around. Everyone was full, rubbed their bellies.
Summer crashed to sleep after half a mug of beer, while Arina was on her third. We got to talking and the conversation shifted to professions. It turned out that Arina’s was a Monster Hunter, and Dandee was a Gladiator.
I laughed. “That’s an odd one. Not a lot of arenas in the swamp, is there?”
“Nah mate, none at all.”
“What’s it do?”
Dandee shrugged. “I haven’t the clue. I never upgraded it even once. I wanna be good with me sword, and ain’t gonna waste any Essence on how to please no damn crowd.”
“No, that makes sense.”
I handed Dandee the spare scabbard I had bought. “Here, so you don’t cut yourself by accident.”
Dandee winced. “Ah mate, about the sword. I feel I’d need one that I could use both hands on the grip.”
“Now you tell me?”
He nodded. “Aye mate, one that’s good for slashing would be best.”
“Alright. Well, you’re in luck. I have some spare steel and I know just the perfect one to make.” This froggie was going to get a katana. In this world, I didn’t see any similar swords at the weapon-smith. The closest was a saber.
Arina’s cheeks were ruby. “Ooh, can I request something too?”
I nodded.
“Could you make a similar gauntlet for my right hand?”
She wore rough leather gloves, perfect for crafting a gauntlet right over. I stuck my arm all the way down into the backpack, scrounged around and pulled out a couple of bars of steel. I felt generous, and she needed more than just a gauntlet, but a bracer, elbow guard and a pauldron. She used a shield which protected her left arm.
“Oh, wow. When did you get it?” she asked, glancing at the backpack.
“Just recently,” I said.
“I always wanted to get one, but it’s more of a luxury. It’s more important to pay taxes.”

I took her hand, moved it right before me on the table. “Hold still.”
She turned to face me, scooted her seat closer. “Your profession is a smith or an armorer, right?”
“No, actually.”
She smiled, brushed a strand of brown hair from her face. “What is it then?”
I winked back. “It’s a secret.”
Arina pouted. “That’s not fair, I told you mine, and even the class too. We shared, but we still don’t know your class beyond vanguard.”
I smiled. “That’s true.”
I melted a bar of steel right over her glove, flowed streams out to the fingers. Finger by finger I made joints and segments.
Arina leaned in closer to watch me work. “That’s awesome.”
I etched a flower on the back of her gauntlet. “Like that?”
She nodded. “That’s pretty.”
It took time to get the pieces to work together just right. I tested the fit of each joint by manipulating her hand to make sure the segments were of proper length.
She ran her finger over my left horn. “D-Do they do anything?”
“They’re just for looks, I .. think?” I could imagine a rare instance where they’d come in handy in a fight, but they were more of a liability. Someone could grab it and use it as leverage. It was the same problem as having long hair. Sadly, I had seen plenty of women get dragged around. Perhaps I could cut the horns off without something bad happening?
“Could you make me a bracer please?”
I tapped on the second bar of steel that I had taken out. “Already planned it, all the way up to the pauldron if you like?”
She bit her lower lip. “That would be amazing.”
Arina sat so close that I could almost feel her breath on me. I could smell a faint scent coming from her, like that of strawberries. She fidgeted in her seat, pulled at the collar of her coat, fanned her face with her hand.
“Did it get a little hot here?” she asked, and unbuttoned her padded vest from top down to the bottom. Flapped the sides to cool off.
I peaked at her chest. The nipples of her ample chest poked at her white shirt. They probably hadn’t invented bras in this world just yet.
“Is there a place to take a bath around here?” I asked. “I could also use a shave.”
She gestured to the river. “There’s always that. Most of the snow had melted already, so it’s a bit shallow, and cold.”
“You know what.” I said. “I could make a steel bath tub, and Summer could warm up the water. What do you think?”
She grinned. “I’d love that, and I have used a razor before.”
I could make a straight edge razor, that was true. But I wasn’t sure how’d feel about Arina with something so incredibly sharp at my neck.
Still, after finishing the gauntlet, bracer, and the pauldron, I made a steel drum barely enough to fit two people. It required my shield and all the remaining steel I had bought. We used buckets to haul in the clear water from the river. It took many trips.
Summer wasn’t happy when we woke her up to act as our water heater. But when she understood our plan, she was more than happy to help. She used a spell that sent a continuous stream of flames against the side of the barrel.
She stopped once the water was sending up gentle steam. Everyone was eager, and there was only one thing left to do.
