On Arcby, the air was hot and humid, like middle of the day during summer in Florida. The streets were empty. Everyone hid in the shade, or stayed indoors. We hurried over to the cemetery hoping to get out of the blazing sun. I fully expected the area to be roped off, and what I found was somewhat similar.
Many large tents had sprung up around the place along the road. They had emblems and flags outside like some kind of a military encampment. I counted three different flags. Guards stood at the ready at the barricaded entrance to the crypts. Patrols moved through the area.
What did they need us for? It looked like they had it under control. Then I found the Brotherhood tent and it all made sense. The bottom of the their tent was dirtied, the color was a dull beige. Stains covered it up and down the sides. The flap was ripped in two places. The emblem of a gray helmet looked weathered. Maybe it was supposed to be black? Other tents were larger, colorful and new.
I stepped inside the brotherhood’s tent and it was like walking into an air conditioned room. A stone totem stood in the corner blowing cold air. That’s amazing, I thought to myself. How did it work?
The space inside was cramped. Six men sat on the ground around the perimeter, and they looked no better than the tent itself. Chipped weapons, dented and rusted armor. I spotted gray on their heads and beards. I hadn’t realized just how bad of a spot the Brotherhood was in. Who funded them and why was it lacking?
They turned their heads when we entered. The four of us squeezed in, found a spot to sit on the dirty ground near the exit. The Brotherhood could have used a bigger tent, and chairs too. At least it was cool inside with the magical air conditioning totem.
The commander looked up from his small desk. “Glad you could make it.”
“By all means,” I said.
“Are they here to help as well?” commander asked.
“Yes, they’re in my party.” I introduced them to him.
He smiled. “Happy to have you.”
“When is it starting?” I asked.
He frowned. “Wish I could tell you, but I really don’t know. Unfortunately, it’s not up to me.”
“I understand.”
The men in the fancier tents ran the show, and I had a strong suspicion that it would be a total clusterfuck. I knew all about that – I had worked at one before. Hurry up and wait was the motto. The men here were all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Lovely.
The commander nudged a badge on a leather cord up across the table to me. “Keep that on you for this mission.”
I wore it around my neck. The badge had an engraved helmet in steel, painted black. Scratches crisscrossed it, and the paint was chipped along the edges.
“How bad is it?” I asked. While I had witnessed what they were capable of, I didn’t have the full picture. “Did they send any scouts down there to take a look?”
The commander winced. “It’s bad, and that’s why they brought three divisions. If they tell you that you’re getting in the way, don’t listen to them. We have as much right to be here as they do.”
“And these Silver guys, they’re really good?”
“They like to think so. Their three lieutenants will take on the death lords, while everyone else will help to clear out the raised undead.”
Death lords sounded menacing, and about right. When I had killed the five before they didn’t seem all that strong. Coming back from the dead must have made them into something much more powerful.
“Are there any bounties?” I asked.

“Sure, especially for the death lords. The rest follow the typical schedule of rates. Don’t forget to pick up proofs of kill.”
“Got it,” I said, but I really didn’t get it. I assumed Arina would know what to take from whatever we killed.
A horn blew outside. Everyone bolted to their feet. I exited the tent and nearly crashed into a group of three. They gave me cold looks as they walked passed.
These guys were monsters. Especially the one at the front. He was taller than me by a head, wider too. Almost every inch of him was covered in steel, intricate silver lines ran up his armor. I spotted a small opening at the back of his gauntlet that proudly displayed the five digits of his number in crimson.
78,612
On his back hung a great-sword. It was a foot wide and nearly touched the ground.
Overcompensating much?
Everyone was in a hurry to exit the tents. I spotted two more Silvers who appeared to be large and in charge.
“Who are those?” I asked.
“Those are the Silver lieutenants, just below captain,” Arina said. “They’re a pompous lot.”
“Is that right?” I said.
I assumed we’d go in last and kill whatever was left afterward. Though I wondered if anything would be left alive once they reached the staging chamber. At any rate, it would be interesting to watch them in action. It would give me an idea of the sort of power that crimson numbered had.
They readied in a column of three, just wide enough to fit through the entrance and go down the steps. The regular troops wore matching armor of plate and chainmail. They had distinct colors similar to the three flags I had seen around the area. They carried swords and spears, but a few had what looked like large lanterns on poles.
I felt excitement build up in me, as it always did before any serious raids. [Backtrack] was off cooldown, my minions were animated inside the backpack, and I was ready.
One of the three in charge shouted a command, and the line surged forward. A group of thirty rushed through the entrance and down the steps. Then a second group went right after, and finally the third.
The other two lieutenants wore similar plate armor with silver lines, but carried different weapons, gigantic in size. One had an axe, the third carried a massive shield with a longsword.
“What are all those silver lines on their armor?” I asked.
“Runesmithing,” Summer said. “The lines are conduits, while the runes are hidden underneath. And I know that because I have dabbled in a bit of Runesmithing myself. I have it as rank two at the moment, but I plan to upgrade it once I have enough Essence.”
“Oh wow. I’d love to learn a more about that.”
“I could show you, but you need to have the profession to actually be able to create the conduits, shape the runes and imbue them with mana.”
“I see.”
The three Silver lieutenants entered last. The brotherhood men waited a few seconds and we all followed after them. They carried an assortment of melee weapons, but mostly swords with shields.
We walked past the entrance. Summer lit her staff to provide us light.
