We climbed out of the crypts into daylight. I had to shield my eyes from how bright it was outside. The fresh air never smelled so good, no matter how hot and humid it was.

They had built up a barricade around the exit, and we had to finesse through it to get out. All around, I saw many injured and bloodied in the shade getting healed. It was a painful sight to see, but it explained why I didn’t find so many corpses down in the crypts – half the men had managed to escape.

The men turned their heads and looked at us. Some of them eyed the big head that I carried in a bloodied cloak. The brotherhood men were in a shade of a tree, chatting among the themselves. Their glum looks turned to joy when they saw us walk past.

You’re alive!” one of them said.

I laughed. “For now.”

I went straight for the brotherhood tent to get out of the heat. Inside, Commander Brent looked his ever stoic.

Welcome back,” he said. “And thank you for looking out for my men.”

I brought presents.” I dropped the first head before his table.

The commander leaned forward to look at it. “That’s … quite the big head. You killed him?”

Not just me, but my party too. And you should see the other one.”

I fished out the head with many eyes and tentacles, dropped right next to the first. I liked keeping souvenirs, but not this sort. I was more than happy to get rid of them. Arina and Summer walked up and tossed out all manner of grisly body parts from their backpacks, adding them to the pile.

What’s the bounty on them?” I asked.

He raised an eyebrow. “Impressive. You have certainly managed to surprise me, Jack. And as far as the bounty, that remains to be seen, but I’ll let you know as soon as I find out more.”

There are still two more hiding in the crypts, and someone should go down to burn the bodies before they rise up from the dead.”

Two more?”

We killed these, and the Silvers killed two. Stefan and another one remain down there.”

The Silvers are sending for a division captain. I'm sure they'll take care of it now.”

I nodded. “Great.”

Now, if you can handle a couple of these, then I have a perfect mission for the four of you. Ten crowns each when it’s done.”

You have my interest,” I said.

There’s a nasty infestation of grublings outside of Eldwood in the forest past the fields, west of the walls. The hatchery would need to be found and destroyed. The grublings attack the farmers, and then get inside the city somehow.”

I know that forest,” Arina said. “I used to collect mushrooms in the fall there, and had to kill a few of them myself.”

Commander smiled. “Excellent, so you’re familiar with the place and the critter. It would mean a lot for the Brotherhood if you can take care of this menace. It’s a never ending problem in that area.”

Is that something that needs to be taken care of right away?” I asked.

The sooner the better, but it’s been going on for months now with little progress.”

We need to rest up first.”

Of course, by all means,” commander Brent said.

We exited the tent to find the lieutenant waiting. Standing bare chested, he wasn’t wearing any armor. The top of his breeches had stains of blood.

I was surprised he had survived a direct hit from the behemoth down in the crypts. Armor or not, it must had crushed his ribs right into his heart and punctured his lungs. And maybe he would have been dead if not for Arina’s immediate healing.

I do believe I owe the four of you an apology for calling you weak,” the lieutenant said, then looked toward Arina. “And I owe you my gratitude. I’d be dead if not for you. My name’s Lysander, lieutenant to captain Mydrom of the third division.”

Arina crossed her arms. “Does that apology and gratitude come in the shape of a coin? Many and golden perhaps?”

Lysander opened his mouth, hesitated to speak. “I-I .. did-”

Yeah, I didn’t think so.” Arina turned to leave. “Come on.”

We left the guy standing there awkwardly. He probably never had a healer in his Silver organization talk back to him like that. Maybe he’d learn some manners the next time we saw him.

Do the two of you have any warm clothes?” Arina asked me and Dandee.

What for?” I said.

For Drupford of course. While it should have warmed up a little bit by now, it’s still cold. We should beat the rush.”

I have my padded vest,” I said.

It’s a good start, but you’d need more than that. And he’ll need boots or he’ll get frostbite. I need to stop by Hillmoor to grab my items. You should buy some gear for the cold.”

Sounds like a plan,” I said.

We walked back to the portal. While Arina and Summer went to Arina’s library on Hillmoor, we stopped at Eldwood. As Summer explained to me, out of the eight cities there were between three to five cities available under the sun. People moving from the sun-down to the sun-up direction.

Hillmoor was about to go dark, Eldwood was the next one in line, then Arcby, Kladmont and finally Drupford was the current sun-up city. After six months in darkness and frozen cold, it took close to a month to warm up before people moved over.

The rich had a residence in every one of the eight cities. They hopped from the sun-down city to the next one in line, the autumn city. It had the best climate, and was always jammed packed full of people. Everyone else had to endure the cold and the heat for some portion of the year, like Arina. She owned two libraries across the world from each other, and spent half the year in each one. This meant she had to face the cold and the scorching heat twice a year.

At Eldwood the market was busy. Finding the stall with winter gear didn’t take much effort. I tried on a few cloaks, and ended up buying a thick fur cloak to go over my shoulders. I also purchased what looked like a fur-lined aviator hat with flaps to cover the ears. Dandee got similar items and a padded vest too. Since he hardly had any coin, I footed the bill. I had plenty to spare still.

Finding a pair of warm boots for Dandee turned out to be easier than I thought. At the cobbler they had all manner of strange looking foot apparel to fit the various races that lived in the cities.

After the winter gear, we stopped by the food section of the market. I bought another bag of potatoes, more bread, cheese and a couple of whole cleaned chickens ready for grilling.

We met up with Arina and Summer back at the portals. They carried with them more backpacks and baggage than I thought they had stuff to fill them with. I helped them carry it and we took the portal to Arcby, then Kladmont before arriving at Drupford.

A chill air greeted as soon as we walked through the portal. Snow crunched under foot. I smelled cold, fresh air gusting through down the empty streets. I spotted slow movement ahead.

Keep your eyes open,” Arina said. “And weapons ready. There are undead about, and we’re gonna collect skulls.”
