I hooked my thumb to the east, to the black wall. “What is that .. thing?”
Dandee turned his head in the direction I pointed, looked at it for a time, and shrugged. “Don’t know mate. Nobody does. And those who do know, they lying.”
“Has anyone been inside it?” Technically I was, but I remembered nothing.
“Nah mate, the entry-ways are too high up the water, and I can’t fly.”
We had been walking for a couple of hours. We’d lose sight of the hills from time to time, blocked by trees and growth. Going north proved easy as long as we kept the sun to our left, and the black wall to our right.
The giant turtles that I was afraid of had turned out to be vegetarian. According to Dandee, the biggest threat were the snakes, followed by the lizards I had killed before. He had retooled his spear to use the steel spear-head that I had made for him. He admired it like it was some sort of piece of art, a beauty to behold.
“What’s wrong with the swamp?” I asked him.
“Ain’t nothing wrong with the swamp mate. It’s the best place, it’s me home.”
“So, why do you want to leave?”
“It’s the long naps. I have survived nineteen of them, and been lucky too. Only lost one eye, ya see. I’m the oldest of me tribe, and I want to stay that way. All my brothers and sisters are dead. We live just long enough to spawn the next generation, init crazy?”
I winced. “I didn’t realize it was that bad.”
Dandee nodded. “Aye, and I want more than what the swamp has to offer. I’d love to see the world too.”
“What sort of people live in Hillmoor?”
“All sorts, mate. A bit of your demon sort with them horns. Then there’s some that are covered in fur, but the real ugly ones are beige colored and hairless. They call themselves humans.”
I laughed. “Yeah, they’re a bunch of hairless monk-”
A sound to my right had me turning my head. Dandee must have heard it too, he stopped.
“Did you hear-”
A vicious mug full of nasty teeth peered out of the growth in the distance. From out between the reeds to the east, from the direction of the black wall. It was the size of a large dog. A dog from hell. It burst out, bolted for us at a dead sprint.
Dandee ducked to the ground, spear pointing forward. I barely had time to get in position. The creature leapt. Its mouth was wide open, devil eyes set on me. I lunged forward, brought the shield about to the front and put the whole of my weight into it.
It crashed against it. I felt the impact travel up my left arm into my shoulder. I moved the shield aside, watched the creature crumple before my feet. It was all bloodied up from the spikes.
Stupid thing.
I sliced down with the machete using all my strength. Cleaved it clean right through its thick skull, heard it crunch.

I dislodged my machete from its head. The creature’s leg twitched and stopped.
“What manner of beast is this?” I asked.
Dandee winced. “Them be bloody grublings, but they don’t show til it’s dark.”
I looked around. “It’s not dark.”

“Yeah, mate. I don’t need both eyes to see that. Something ain’t right.”
Scaled skin like an insect, four beady eyes. It looked like a mix of bulldog and cockroach. It had a mean bite and teeth like knives. I didn’t want to meet any more of them.
Dandee scratched his head. “Ya know, normally, when there’s one, there’s-”
The thicket of reeds shook, came alive. More of the same creatures darted out of the growth. Dozen of them. I instantly cast [Ethereal Blades.] In the two seconds it took for the spell to start working, they closed the distance on us by half.
They darted to the sides to avoid the blades. Clever bugs. The ethereal blades whistled past them, and only managed to hit one. I guided the star forward, aimed for the closest one, then veered sharp to get another. It sliced right through them. Blood and guts rained down to the ground.

Nine remained. They surrounded us. I brought the star about for another run. To the side of me, Dandee impaled one on his spear, stabbed it again and again until it stopped squealing.
I shoved back with the shield. Slashed with the machete. I weaved about to dodge their attacks. One bite and I’d lose an arm.
Three pounced on me at the same time. I cast Burst of Clarity and the world slowed to a crawl. Including me. It felt like I was moving through water. To the side, the star was coming back around.
Three grubling floated slowly through the air, like a movie played back at quarter speed. They drew closer. I stabbed the furthest one with the machete. Right in its mouth. Slid the shield to block the another.
It left them perfectly lined up. The star buzzed right through them. All the gory detail, played out in slow motion. The blood, the guts. The stench.
I turned much too late. Saw a gruesome sight. The remaining bastards were tearing Dandee apart. His head was gone.
Damn it.
Past him in the distance, the ground seemed to move like a carpet. Death approached. A thousand were trampling toward me. It sounded like a stampede of wild animals.
I felt a high of an adrenaline rush pulse through me. My heart beat fast. I cast [Ethereal Blades] and let loose a barrage just as they neared the range of it. It barely made a dent in the approaching tide.
I hovered the star up front at the edge of its control range. Spinning faster and faster. Seconds ticked down, Burst of Clarity ended. The world jolted back to full speed. I checked the cooldown on it to see when I could use it again, and groaned.
[t1][Burst of Clarity]

The star sliced a short path. It killed a few, and in an instant it was gone. Overrun and trampled. A thousand to one. This wasn’t a fight I could win.
A split second before the wall of death was on me, I used [Backtrack, 60 minutes] and the world blinked.
