Chapter 1: (Sneak Preview)

You came to my lair as such a little thing. You were such a cute little thing. But you were one of them, so I knew you would suffer.

The magic rippled across my spine. It shivered with the sensation and I woke up, stood up. Learning what was trespassing required focus. I saw you, climbing the slope of my mountain. The cold wind blew down but you powered through anyway. I saw the heat of fire in you. The heat of determination. It was strongest in you but all of your party had it. They marched ahead of you, leading the way. How silly the social dynamics you humanoids play with are. Enough of your kind had made this journey for me to recognize the leaders, whether you recognized them or not.

He was a strong sort. I think he introduced himself as a paladin to me. He led your group up the mountain to the grotto entrance.

I looked down to my minions. They had felt your pull too. And they were waiting for their orders. My nod told them. We were going to do the usual. The usual always works.

Well… the usual almost always worked.
