Chapter 6: Chapter 4: The First Step

It's early morning in the barn and we see Yin sleeping. Ruby and Yang are already gone and a shadow covers Yin. 

Lapis looks down at the sleeping form of Yin with an annoyed look. Lapis raises her foot and she brings it down onto Yin's stomach.

Yin quickly wakes up and holds his stomach in pain. "Why?" Yin asks in a strained voice.

"We're gonna be late!" Lapis says as she grabs Yin's arm and lifts him. "And you're not getting kicked out for being late.

Lapis begins to drag Yin to the washrooms.

Yin stands in front of the sink looking at himself in the mirror. His eyes start to slowly close till Lapis slaps him on the back of the head.

"I'm up! I'm up!" Yin yells at her.

"Hurry up!" Lapis yells as she begins to brush her teeth.

Yin rolls his eyes and grabs his tooth brush. "So needy." Yin whispers.

"I heard that." Lapis says in an annoyed tone.

Yin's eyes widen in fear and he quickly begins to brush his teeth.

Yin opens his locker, that's next to Ruby's, as Ren and Nora walk by them.

"Wounder what those two were so worked up about." Ruby questions.

Yin puts on his black leather jacket.

"There's a lot to be worked up about." Yin states as he grabs Judgement Day and puts in on his back.

"You seem awfully chipper this morning." Yang says to Ruby.

"Yep!" Ruby agrees as she grabs Crescent Rose from her locker. "No more awkward small talk or 'getting to know you' stuff. Today I get to let my sweetheart do the talking." Ruby pets her scythe then she hugs it.

Yin and Yang look at each other and then to Ruby.

"Just remember Ruby, other people are going through initiation." Yin says. "If you want to grow up and be an adult, you're going to have to make friends and learn to work together."

"Ugh, you sound like dad!" Ruby complains and she sets her scythe back in her locker. "Okay, first of all what does making friends have to do with fighting? And secondly, I don't need help to grow up. I drink milk!"

"But what about when we form teams?" Yang asks.

"Uhm, I don't know, I-I'll just be on one of your teams or something..." Ruby states.

Yin and Yang look at each other again then back to Ruby.

"Maybe you should try and go on other teams with people, you know. Make friends." Yin says.

Ruby walks up to Yin and points at him. "My dearest brother Yin, are you implying that you do not wish to be on the same team as me!?"

"W-What?!" Yin waves his hands in defense. "I never said that!"

"I think he means it'll help you break out of your shell." Yang adds.

"What the!?" Ruby yells. "I don't need to break out of my shell, that's absolutely ridiculous!"

"No need to get angry Ruby." Yin says and Ruby glares at him. "I'm sorry?"

Ruby huffs and grabs her scythe and puts on the back of her waist. 

"You're kind of bad at this." Yang whispers to Yin and he just pushes her away.

"Like you're any better." Yin mumbles.

"You got something to say!" Yang says as she takes a step closer to Yin.

"Maybe I do!" Yin says and he takes a step closer to Yang.

"Oh yeah!"

"Yeah!"

Yin and Yang but heads together.

"When was the last time you actually did something useful, huh?!" Yin yells.

"I'll have you know I helped dad move some boxes from the attic to the shed outback!" Yang yells.

"That ain't much!"

"I would like to see you do better!"

Ruby is off to the side watching the ordeal with a slightly disappointed look on her face.

"Would all first year students please report to Beacon Cliff for initiation?" Glynda's voice comes over the intercom. "Again, all first year students report to Beacon Cliff immediately."

As the sibling Trio get outside Yin turns to Yang.

"Yang?" Yin gets her attention.

"Yes, dear brother." Yang asks.

Yin gives her an annoyed look then specks. "I need you to punch me-"

Yang punches Yin in the face, full force and he falls to the ground.

"What the hell, Yang!" Yin yells as his eyes turn Lilac and he glares at her.

"You said to punch you." Yang defends herself.

"I was gonna say in the arm or shoulder!" 

"Should have been more specific." Yang says as she walks off.

Yin gets up as he holds his cheek and his golden aura covers him as he walks to the cliff.

Yin is standing between Yang and Ruby on some square pads as Ozpin addresses them.

 "For years you have trained to become warriors." Ozpin starts. "And today, your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest."

"Now, I'm sure many of you have heard rumors about the assignment of teams." Glynda says. "Well, allow us to put an end to your confusion. Each of you will be given teammates... Today."

"What? Aw..." Ruby makes a scared noise.

Yin pumps his arms in excitement. 

"These teammates will be with you for the rest of your time here at Beacon." Ozpin explains. "So it is in your best interest to be paired with someone with whom you can work well."

Ruby makes another scared noise and Yin gives her a concerned look.

Ozpin continues. "That being said, the first person you make eye contact with after landing will be your partner for the next four years."

"What?!?" Ruby yells and Yin covers his ears.

"See? I told you!" Nora says to Ren.

"Oh, I hope I get paired with someone good." A rabbit faunas says.

"I've got a bad feeling about this." Lapis mumbles.

Ozpin continues. "After you've partnered up, make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will meet opposition along the way. Do not hesitate to destroy everything in your path, or you will die."

Yin gives Yang an excited look and she rolls her eyes.

Ozpin continues again. "You will be monitored and graded for the duration of your initiation. But our instructors will not intervene. You will find an abandoned temple at the end of the path containing several relics. Each pair must choose one, and return to the top of the cliff. We will regard that item, as well as your standing, and grade you appropriately. Are there any questions?"

Jaune raises his hand. "Yeah, um, sir-"

"Good!" Ozpin interrupts. "Now, take your positions."

Yin cracks his knuckles and his neck and gets ready.

"Um, sir?" Jaune questions. "I've got, um, a question." Weiss gets catapulted and other students get catapulted as well. "So, this landing strategy thing, uh, w-what is it? You're, like, dropping us off or something?"

"No. You will be falling." Ozpin explains.

More students get catapulted.

"Oh, I see, like, did you hand our parachutes for us?"

Nora shouts in excitement as she gets catapulted. 

"No. You will be using your own landing strategy." Ozpin explains.

"Uhuh... yeah."

Yang winks at Yin and Ruby as she puts on some aviators. Then she gets catapulted.

Yin gives Ruby a two fingered salute and he gets catapulted. 

The Ruby gets catapulted.

"So, um, what exactly is a landing strate-" Jaune gets catapulted. "GYYYYYYYY!"

Ozpin turns around and watches his students get thrown into the distance. Then he takes a sip from his mug.
