The Simian Sage’s temper hit the roof when it saw the bloody scratches on its chest. It felt like it had been tricked by the ant of a human being in front of it. Glaring at the human that had escaped to a safe distance, it unleashed a furious roar.

Instantly, a hundred beasts surrounded Xiang Ning and the Simian Sage. Xiang Ning frowned. That was too few. But just as he was wondering, an alarm sounded with his Combat Instinct. It didn’t matter what it was, Xiang Ning tossed his Devourer aside and tumbled sideways. That was all he could do.

The moment he moved, the ground he was standing on erupted, revealing a Tyrant Spider. To be honest, Xiang Ning had been thoroughly traumatized by that species. It was the only opponent that had made him think he was truly going to die. Thinking back to the helplessness he had felt in that cave, he felt greatly uncomfortable.

He looked at both beasts and knew he was in danger.

“Sir, due to the cleared path, Fortress Three is now able to send over reinforcements. Estimated time of arrival is ten minutes.”

“Good! Make them go faster!” The soldiers at their last line of defense were already fighting. They had rescued all the people that needed rescuing, except for Xiang Ning. The elderly general was worried sick for him. It didn’t seem like he was very far away, but there were thousands of beasts between him and the boy. The number alone made him feel helpless. Unless three tier six masters were present to clear a path, or a tier seven master forced their way through, they would be unable to reach Xiang Ning.

“My only worry now is that Xiang Ning might not be able to hold on!” The general’s brows were tightly knitted. He didn’t know why the Simian Sage had lost control of its temper. It looked like Xiang Ning might have the upper hand in the fight, but the Simian Sage could withstand Xiang Ning’s attacks, and Xiang Ning couldn’t take a hit in return. If he was hit, the immense power of the beast could be fatal.

The general knew how terrifying a Simian Sage was, let alone one that was together with a Tyrant Spider.

Xiang Ning noticed too. His Taunt had been activated nonstop, but it was losing its effectiveness on the Simian Sage. The Tyrant Spider, on the other hand, only grew more and more violent. It already had a bloodthirsty nature and the Taunt effects were like adding oil to fire. Its tier five abilities were lifted to tier six from sheer rage.

Xiang Ning could clearly feel the Tyrant Spider making stronger and faster attacks; not even the Simian Sage could have predicted that.

Now, Xiang Ning did not dare touch Taunt again, afraid that it might attract more spiders. That would be a disaster. He had Refresh, sure, but he must still be able to escape alive after recovery! Even he was nervous about being surrounded by tens of berserk beasts.

But no matter how perfect his plan was, there would always be the unexpected. In his earpiece, he heard, “There’s a team trapped in Zone Thirty-two, requesting help!”

“Zone Seventeen… requesting help!”

“Zone Thirty… requesting help!”

…

Suddenly, more than ten requests for help popped up. Xiang Ning looked over. He was already about to break away from the main portion of the battlefield. Among the trapped teams, he saw familiar faces: Li Zihao, Fang Rou, and the rest of his team. They were only tier three, seven-star at most, none of them were tier four! The only tier four, Wu Rui, was lying on the ground.

Xiang Ning took a deep breath. Nothing can happen to them!

Perhaps because he saw Xiang Ning looking back, the general’s expression changed and he immediately connected to Xiang Ning’s earpiece. “Xiang Ning, reply if you hear me.”

“General—”

“Listen to me. Run if you can, now. Help is on the way. Also, leave your friends be. I promise you I’ll bring every single one of your friends back.”

“General, I can sense that the two other tier six Beast Generals aren’t in this region. As long as we kill the Simian Sage, the army will retreat. I only request for you to protect them while I kill it!” Xiang Ning said in a low voice.

“What? Have you gone mad? If you can kill a tier six Beast General, you might as well kill me! Come back immediately, I don’t want anything to happen to you!” The general almost had a heart attack. Kill a tier six beast? A Simian Sage? Even three tier six masters combined might not be able to kill it!

The deputy general next to him, who saw how furious the general was, warned, “Xiang Ning, come back now. You shouldn’t waste your potential here!”

“If I go back, how many more people will die? Don’t worry, I’ll return safely.” Xiang Ning turned off his microphone and sighed. Why didn’t anyone trust him? He was so frustrated that he looked up and sighed at the heavens.

From the audience’s perspective, it looked like he was taking his last look at the world.

“Hey, hey, hey, wait... what’s Teacher Xiang Ning doing?”

“Why’d he suddenly sigh?!”

“My brother is one of the people working in logistics. Help is arriving in seven minutes, but there’s too many trapped teams. The front line is just too long, they won’t be able to save everyone!”

“I heard that, too—there’s even Qiling Academy students present. Wait, unless.…”

Everyone had a crazy thought at the same time. Xiang Ning wasn’t actually going to kill the Simian Sage himself, was he? There’s even a Tyrant Spider next to it! Why was he so confident? Where was he getting his confidence from?

Xiang Ning looked down and the Devourer’s attachment suddenly lit up an eerie red. The gray goo slithered out like a pulsing blood vessel, able to sense the madness in its owner. Opening the eighth gate was no casual affair. Now was the opportunity; he had a reason, and it was time to see how powerful the opening of the eighth gate would be.

Xiang Ning took out a test tube from his space ring that he had been given by Dong Qianyi. It contained a medicine that would save his last breath. Xiang Ning wasn’t sure if he would have the sanity to activate Refresh upon opening all eight gates, so it was best he injected it first.

What he didn’t know was that everything was on livestream. It looked as if, to kill the beast, Xiang Ning had injected himself with some chemical with massive side effects that might kill him. The internet discourse was terrifying and tens of scenarios were instantly fabricated.

But every theory ended with Xiang Ning dying in battle.
