No one was sure whether to thank the man or call him a madman because he must have had a death wish to throw a hand grenade in a sealed space! But thanks to him, the moment the grenade exploded, a person’s head was saved.
The moment before the grenade exploded, the monster was already more than thirty meters away from the exit and very near everyone. The strength of the explosion, however, not only threw a person as strong as Xiang Ning back, but the monster as well.
Coincidentally, Nathan was thrown into the tunnel from the explosion.
Xiang Ning felt his ears ringing, his mind unable to sense his surroundings. His muscles ached and he felt terrible, as if all of his internal organs had just taken a rollercoaster ride. He shook his head and immediately smelled blood. It wasn’t his, though. A thick, bloody smell was infused in the dust and smoke! “Wait, even if someone was injured, most of the people were wearing battle armor when it appeared. That grenade was enough to throw them back but definitely not break armor!”
Xiang Ning’s Combat Instinct sounded an alarm again. A truly unprecedented level of terror, as if death was just around the corner, flooded his body. His brain hadn’t had time to react before the Devourer in his hand suddenly popped open its attachment, turning into black goo and enveloping him.
In the next moment, he was tossed in the air again, but this time, he spat a mouthful of blood mid-air as he faintly heard the sound of screaming.
The Devourer’s core returned to its attachment and Xiang Ning watched everything unfold, stunned. The monster charged into the group like a wolf in a herd of sheep. It was bloody, violent, and insane. Blood and flesh spattered in all directions as screams filled up the space. It was like hell!
In that situation, even the most determined people would lose focus, let alone Xiang Ning. But a moment later, he scrambled up from the ground. Eight Gates! Open all eight of them!
Power that was infinitely close to tier seven flooded Xiang Ning’s body as he unleashed Shadowmist Ghost Step, charging toward the door that had been torn open behind him. Before him was the monster, who had just killed its last person. It had taken less than fifteen seconds to kill them all. If the Devourer hadn’t protected him at the last moment, Xiang Ning would have been one of the bodies on the ground.
He was still suffering immensely, especially his left shoulder where he had been attacked. It was numb and sagging, and he could feel his muscles and internal organs screaming in pain. He was very aware that he had sustained severe internal and external injuries, but there was no time to care about that. He must run. He must get out of there. He had never felt such desperation to live in his life!
He felt as if Death was right behind him, but the metal door looked so far away and the monster had already turned to look at him!
It unleashed a roar like a wild animal, then took one powerful step forward, denting the ground. At maximum speed, it swung at Xiang Ning’s head. If he had been hit, he would have instantly died without question. Through his Combat Instinct, he knew that if he didn’t turn around, he would die!
But would he live even if he did?
He chose to turn around without hesitation, holding back his pain as he unleashed his full power!
“Mental Power - Oscillate!”
Peak Mastery Reforge!

A strong power surged from the Devourer’s core. In recent days, the bioweapon had been nourished very well and stored vast amounts of energy. When Xiang Ning activated Reforge, the stored energy poured out like water out of a dam across the entire blade. Reforge was a last-resort technique that hurt the Devourer as much it hurt the opponent, especially at Peak Mastery level. When he turned around, he slashed forward with all his might, an attack that even a tier seven Sect Master wouldn’t dare take the full brunt of.
The monster’s pupils shrank and it suddenly changed its stance in mid-air, fully taking his attack.
The Devourer shattered, fresh blood pouring out of the blade. That was the life force of the Devourer, and even the flesh between Xiang Ning’s thumb and index finger tore from the strong vibrations; but what about the monster?
It had used its hand to block the slash and lost three fingers in the process, its shrill wailing permeating the space. Xiang Ning’s eardrums hurt from the cries!

The monster kicked its leg out and Xiang Ning felt like he was hit by a tank driving at full speed as he was thrown back like a cannonball. He hit the side of the torn metal door! He felt like he was going to die as helplessness and fatigue washed over him. He wanted to sleep, but knew that sleep meant death. He was very close to it now. Once his brain shut off, he would truly die.
If he were sent to the hospital, one would find all his internal organs shattered, his ribcage fractured, and his heart bleeding. Even his pupils were unfocused.
They would say he couldn’t be saved.
But Xiang Ning didn’t want to die. He thought about his family in Marsh City. Xiang Xiaoyu, Fang Rou, Grandpa Director, the kids…. He couldn’t die. He couldn’t die. He had promised them that he’d be back, so how could he die?
Those racing thoughts flashed by in barely a second, while the monster was still howling in pain.
“Refresh!” Xiang Ning activated Refresh, the skill that could only be used once a day, and a strong surge of vitality flooded his body once again, all his injuries healed immediately in barely a tenth of a second.
“Eight Gates! Open!” When his gaze refocused, he opened all eight gates. There was no time to care about the side effects—he needed to live!
He stomped his feet into the ground and leaped through the torn metal door using Shadowmist Ghost Step.
The monster came to its senses when he disappeared. But this time, it didn’t charge immediately, and instead paused for a second because it had previously sensed that Xiang Ning was dead. Yet now he had suddenly resurrected and was even radiating a powerful life force. That was far beyond anything it was familiar with, so when it finally came to its senses, Xiang Ning had disappeared.
Now it was feeling deeply humiliated because it felt like Xiang Ning had tricked it. How dare the puny ant play dead!?
