The balance of power shifted

...

-Vulcan POV-

...

Ugh, what happened?

I can't see anything at all, everything is completely dark.

All I remember is the fact that I ate the gross finger and felt everything freeze.

Now I remember, I was fighting that Finger Bearer guy the white-haired weirdo told me about. I died, so how am I here?

Is my consciousness really in the afterlife? Will I finally be able to meet her?

"It's a boy! Congratulations Miss Joseph. He even has your beautiful red hair." A familiar female voice interrupted my thoughts, making me think that this might really not be the afterlife.

I still can't see, but I do hear a man with a deep voice say, "...His name will be Vulcan Joseph. Do you like it, honey?"

Another soft female voice responded to the man with, "I love it, but I do wonder if he will awaken your special... gifts... or my gifts."

I am starting to figure out my situation. I was most likely just reborn, explaining why I don't have the strength to open my eyelids yet, even if I could, my perception would be worse than being blind.

While I am thinking, the other woman, who I assume is my nurse speaks, "Well, he shall see as he grows up, let's not talk about it now."

This is starting to confuse me as I am starting to connect the dots...

The two started talking about random things for a bit until the man starts talking again with sadness in his voice, "Mary, my beautiful wife, I'm still sorry have to leave him, it's all my fault... but we both know we will just get us all killed. At least there is a chance we will meet when he is grown... At least Clara will take care of him in our place."

*Sigh*

"I understand, let's leave tomorrow. We already have everything set. Clara, I want you to act as his mother, I am sorry to leave you to this by yourself. Please forgive me." The woman, who is my birth mother said. She seems to be crying, as I can hear sniffling.

The woman Clara, replied with her own tears and sniffles, "Miss Joseph. Please entrust Vulcan to me, I won't disappoint you."

They continued talking about responsibilities for a couple of minutes, while I was zoning out.

...

This information was shocking, to say the least... I realized that my life was reset to the time of my birth, somehow.

I always thought of my mother (Clara) as my birth mother, so I was very shocked. As a baby who is an adult, I could barely comprehend this.

I never did have a father, and there were always holes in my family's history, but now I realized something. My real parents left me alone, and most likely died somewhere. They had something valuable like a secret or artifact if I had to guess which was worth a lot of money.

It is a good thing I can understand what they are saying since I learned Japanese and English, and brought the knowledge to my baby body. I know babies are born with their eyes almost fully developed, but they do not see clearly until their second year.

This can take a little longer for premature babies. Babies can see from birth; however, initially, their vision is very limited because the retina is not completely developed. Sight is the least developed of the senses at birth.

It was good that I can still gather some information before my parents leave.

To be honest, I won't miss them. I barely know them more than strangers, and they did not try to explain anything to me. At least my fake mother, Clara, was nice to me before she also eventually disappeared when I became a toddler.

Honestly, I don't want to investigate the truth behind them. My parents left me alone, so I will grow up for myself. In a way, it would be better for me to be put in an orphanage in the future, it made me stronger mentally and physically. I'll use this new chance of mine to right the wrongs.

-General POV-

...

The next day, Vulcan's birth parents left, leaving Clara to take care of him.

Vulcan decided to use this chance to try and awaken that feeling he had before his death, every day until he would be put in an orphanage. He also was able to open his eyes, although his sight was terrible.

"Okay, Vulcan. Say 'Ahhh'" Clara said to baby Vulcan while holding a spoon.

Vulcan tried to look away, but Clara tried again, "Come on Vulcan, if you eat, I'll buy you a toy."

"Hmmmm... Maybe you are actually sick. In medieval Europe, leeches were commonly used to treat babies' illnesses. I heard leeches were placed on a baby's windpipe for croup infections. Also, teething babies were commonly purged or bled. Maybe I should get some leeches if you don't feel good."

Internally sighing, Vulcan gave up his resistance and took the spoon in his mouth, "Mmmmm..."

"See, not so bad? Let me put you in your crib."

Picking up Vulcan, she put him in his crib, as he started to fall asleep thinking about that strange feeling dark feeling inside him he had in his last life when he ate the strange finger...

Eyesight is the least developed of all the newborn senses. Newborns can see best at a distance of only 8-14 inches, and until they are about three months old, they see best in their peripheral vision. Babies may also have difficulty distinguishing color tones

Vulcan has been straining himself to strengthen his senses, to grow up with a greater ability to sense things and to gather more information from books when Clara is not around. Unfortunately, she seems to not want to leave Vulcan out of her sight, or allow him outside the small house.

Vulcan was able to figure out that they live in a small house/cabin in the woods.

This was because Vulcan has been able to see around 16 inches away from him. In a way, he broke a world record for babies, mostly due to quick adaptation.

Thinking about his path forward, Vulcan's eyelids automatically close and he starts to doze off into a deep sleep.
