Chapter 2756: Uncontrollable Folly

The next morning, the drizzle turned into rain, and the whole planet was enshrouded in a misty.
Such a misty and rainy day was the best day for killing.
At five o’clock in local time, the camp of the Children of Holy Light was already ablaze with lights. They had all got up for their daily training.
It was the last day of their test.
Having weathered through six days against the temptations of the extraterrestrial devils, they were all the distinguished students of the Holy Light Academy, or at least they thought so.
After one more day, they would become real purgers, which was one of the most important forces in the Covenant Alliance.
Everybody was excited, earnest, and hopeful. Those teenagers were so fascinated by their vision for the future that they did not realize that their excitement and their persistence in their dream had violated the rules of the Covenant Alliance.
At six o’clock in the morning, it was the time for morning prayer.
As if to celebrate the completion of the ultimate test, more mentors and even people more important than mentors had come to the camp today. Those people were all observing the ignorant teenagers thoughtfully from the shadows with rigid smiles on their faces.
Not far away, the purge troop was more active than before too. Now and then, supersonic shuttles were flying above their heads, making the metal tents clatter.
The enormous floating firepower platform had descended to only a hundred meters from the ground. It was so lower that the teenagers could see the glittering cannons on the platform. They even felt that the fortress would fall and crumble everything on the ground into smithereens.
The mentors told the young men that they would be admitted by the purge troop and receive training on this airborne fortress if they could pass the ultimate test.
All delighted, the teenagers embarked on the final part of their journey after breakfast.
At seven in the morning, hundreds of young men and women were dispersed in various areas of the city.
The rain grew heavier, but the mist was not driven away by the rain. Everything was so pale that it did not look like the real world at all.
Just like the day when someone defected for the first time, the rain and the fog gave the teenagers an illusionary sense of security, as if they would find a new path as long as they unveiled the rain and the mist.
At eight in the morning, all the young people were devoted to the purge operation, or so they appeared.
At nine, however, a minor accident took place in a supermarket in the south of the city.
Huala! Huala! Huala! Huala!
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Boom! Boom!
Someone shook the iron fences and hit the gate. Then, they blew up the gate into pieces with a magnetic bomb.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!
As boots rumbled on the floor, two mentors and a team of soldiers from the purge troop barged in, fully armed. The person leading the way for them was exactly Liao Meng, the deputy monitor in Tang Ka’s class!
“This is the place! Chu Zhiyun and Tang Ka have been doing things stealthily here since days ago. I even heard the laughs and cries of a baby yesterday. A very little one. They’re hiding a baby in this place!”
Liao Meng’s face was greasy, and his voice was high-pitched, which seemed rather unfitting for someone of his body size.
“I suspect that they’re possessed by extraterrestrial devils. A few days ago, I even saw colorful lights from the supermarket. God knows what they were doing!”
While declaring ruthlessly, Liao Meng led the mentors and the soldiers into the deepest part of the supermarket.
They rushed very fast and reached the entertainment area in the supermarket only ten seconds later.
What they saw, however, dumbfounded Liao Meng, who found it hard to believe his eyes.
Chu Zhiyun and Tang Ka were not half as panicked as he thought they would be. They were not in clothes they weren’t supposed to wear, or watching or listening to anything that they weren’t supposed to enjoy. On the contrary, the two of them had piled up tremendous projects, albums, and jade chips and were shattering and burning those things up according to the standard procedure of purging without even taking off their masks.
Tang Ka had set the power of his shatter gun to the maximum, which filled the room with deafening noises. It explained why they didn’t hear the strangers knocking on the door.
They were as calm as before even though they were surrounded by tremendous mentors and Purgers. Finishing the destruction work unhurriedly, they took off their masks and looked at everyone expressionlessly.
“How… How is this possible?”

Confused, Liao Meng mumbled, “Where is the baby?”
“What baby?”
Chu Zhiyun stared at her mentor calmly without looking at Liao Meng at all.
“Liao Meng said that he heard a baby’s cries from here yesterday,” her mentor explained.
“Oh.”
Not bothering why Liao Meng eavesdropped on her from outside, Chu Zhiyun said casually, “We destroyed a batch of toys yesterday. Some of them could laugh and cry like babies. The noises were probably from them when they were accidentally activated during burning. Is there a problem?”
“That is impossible!”
Liao Meng shouted, “I also saw colorful lights in the supermarket through the window. How do you explain that?”
“When we burned the stuff that contained tremendous impurities, a lot of light would naturally be caused. Is that really a problem?”
Chu Zhiyun was still expressionless without even frowning, as if she felt that Liao Meng’s stupid questions were a waste of her time.
“Then, why would you lock the door if you weren’t doing anything clandestine in this supermarket?”
Liao Meng’s face became dark.
“There are many beasts in the city. Some are even biochemical beasts whose genes have been strengthened.”
Chu Zhiyun said, “There may be battle puppets that can automatically search for and attack the enemy, and they may still be functioning after half a month.
“We do not want to attract their attention. If they notice us, the locked gate will buy us more time.”
Liao Meng was rendered speechless.
At this moment, the soldiers who searched the whole supermarket reported that nothing inappropriate was found. There were marks of burning in the warehouse and the cold room, but it was part of the standard procedure.
However, those places were still very hot, as if the incineration work had just been completed.
“Look, that is evidence!”
Liao Meng cried again, “You’ve just burned a lot of things! Why? What were you trying to destroy and disguise?”
“Today is the last day of our ultimate test. Everybody wants to complete more work so that they can receive more points.”
Chu Zhiyun explained unhurriedly again, “Everybody is trying their best to shatter and burn as many things as possible, but you’ve brought mentors and Purgers here and disregarded your own mission. Mr. Liao Meng, what’s your problem?”
“I… I… You… You…!”
Liao Meng’s dark face turned red and then pale. “I saw it! I heard it! You… You must be hiding them somewhere! Something is wrong! Something is definitely wrong! You can’t trick me!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I do know that one might see all kinds of illusions when their optical and auditory nerves are controlled by extraterrestrial devils.”
Pausing for a moment, Chu Zhiyun finally glanced at Liao Meng. “Mr. Liao Meng, are you sure that this folly and this waste of precious time and resources are not because of something you imagined?”
“You… Nonsense!”
Liao Meng burst into rage. “My loyalty to the gods is incomparable. You’re the ones who are possessed by extraterrestrial devils. You!”
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
His portable crystal processor beeped and flashed dangerous red light again.
“This is the third time you’ve lost control of your feelings, Mr. Liao Meng.”
Chu Zhiyun stroked her hair and said casually, “And you exceeded the warning line by a lot every time. If I recall correctly, you should be banished from this test after three losses of control.”
As if hit by a lightning bolt, Liao Meng was dumbfounded.
“Impossible. That’s impossible… That’s impossible… That’s impossible…”
He breathed more and more quickly, and the pimples on his face seemed to be exploding. His face was full of fury, fear, and desperation as he shouted, “I’m a Purger. My loyalty to the gods is incomparable. How can I lose control of myself? I can’t! It’s just your trick!”
“If you’re truly loyal to the gods, I suggest you have your brain thoroughly examined. I believe that the gods will definitely save you, Mr. Liao Meng,” Chu Zhiyun said coldly and turned to the mentors.
“Mentors, may we continue our purge work? We have a lot more things to do today, and we do not want to be disturbed by such trivia.”
