As much as he wanted to let out a battle cry, he knew he couldn’t. Ruining the element of surprise wouldn’t do him any good, not when the surprise gave him a landslide advantage.

Taking a running start, he headed fast and purposefully in the direction of the first and biggest guy he was going to take out: the one standing in front of their leader. When he was about a meter away, he put all his power into his legs and leaped with a grunt. Gabriel was able to land a successful dropkick smack in the center of the guy’s back. The strong contact made him scream in pain and shock, which rendered him unable to prevent sprawling on top of Javier.

“What the fuck–?!” the guy who was sitting on the ground exclaimed loudly. He looked up at the attacker and began scooting his ass backwards on the asphalt to get away, but it was too late. Gabriel was already back on his feet and had his hands on the motorcycle helmet. Grabbing the helmet by its thinner segments that looked like it went on a rider’s lower jaw, he wielded it like it was a weapon crafted just for him. The weight of it in his hands felt like freedom, like cold water after wandering around in the desert. Since the smaller lackey was already sitting, the young man chose to be efficient and simply kicked him while he was still down. His foot moved so fast it made a whoosh sound before connecting with the man’s chin and throat.

Who knew that taekwondo and soccer would actually be useful someday? He thought with a smirk. With that one hit, the guy’s eyes rolled to the back of his head as he hit the ground, limp and unconscious lying down and facing the sky in the parking lot. The lower half of his face was quickly reddening, and Gabe was sure that he would come in with a bruise tomorrow morning… if he woke up in time. He looked like he was taking a nap, which made Gabriel’s smirk grow into a smile.

“What do you think you’re doing?!” Javier’s other minion exclaimed having recovered from falling on his leader. He sounded utterly shocked that his friend was just knocked unconscious in the span of a few quick seconds. The lackey squeezed his attacker’s shoulder hard and forced the smaller man to spin around to face him. Using the momentum from being spun around, the smaller man made the helmet connect with the henchman’s jaw hard, the resounding thwack echoing in the empty lot. Gabriel gritted his teeth, annoyed when he realized that enemy number two was only momentarily stunned. The guy swayed on his feet, his eyes a bit dazed and glazed over. He hated that the henchman's rank tobacco-smelling breath was reaching him. It only aggravated him even more.

He switched the helmet over to his left hand and punched the man right to his temple with the protection gear’s hard surface as if he were doing a left hook with his own fist. The attacker smiled and stepped to the side when the fucker fell sideways, hitting the motorcycle and causing it to fall on its side as well. Both of Javier’s playthings hit the ground with a satisfying thud.

“Stay asleep, dickhead.” He spat on the big guy who was now face down on the asphalt and in a similar state of unconsciousness as the other minion.

“H-hey, you should s-stop.” He almost forgot that Javier was there. His squeaky voice sounded pathetic.

“Or what?” He turned around to face his main target. He was delighted to see him shaking.

“O-or–,” Javier was too scared to come up with a good threat. He was shocked that a monster like that was hidden inside a nerdy kid’s body.

“Or you’ll try to beat me up? Or you’ll snitch on me to your daddy? Or you’ll call the rest of your minions to come and beat me up? You're fucking pathetic.” Gabriel took a step towards the man who had been making his best friend's life hell. With each step he took, the bumbling imbecile before him took two steps back.

“It’ll take them at least ten minutes to get here, and I can do a lot in ten minutes.” He sped up his paces, and soon, he had the bully basically running backward while still facing him.

Wow, what an idiot. He's literally jogging backward. He could've made a run for it if he just turned around. Gabriel laughed, making him look even more deranged.

“Don’t come any closer–!” Javier shrieked, his tone delightfully filled with sheer panic and terror.

“You talk too much"

His assailant’s wild and smiling face was the last thing Javier Blaise saw. His last coherent thought before he succumbed to the darkness had to do with smelling pennies and feeling a warm liquid trickle down to his lips.

The youngest monitor cringed at the loud crack that came from Superman punching Blaise with his own fist, unsure if it was from his own knuckles or the bully’s (probably) broken face. The younger man knew that Blaise was unconscious, but he still stomped on his ribcage with one foot for good measure. He had always been a believer that one should always get their money's worth.

“Oh my God! W-what the fuck did you do?!” A feminine voice cried out in horror. The only conscious man didn't even notice the Champion enter the facility, drive into the parking lot, and get out of her car. She walked quickly towards Gabriel but stopped a few meters away from him and Javier’s unconscious body. She looked as though she was contemplating if she could go closer as if she were approaching a wild animal.

“I’d do the same to you, but I don’t hit girls.” He said coolly, showing calm and perfect composure despite what he had just done.

“Quit messing with my brother.” He passed the motorcycle helmet to her with both hands as though it were a basketball, launching it in her direction with a hard flick of his wrists. The helmet hit Simmons in her flat chest and bounced off of it with a thump, causing her to cry out. He walked back to the Facility, swaggering away and leaving behind him a terrified Champion and three men, all older than him by a few years, asleep in the parking lot.

“Gabe! I’m so sorry, I couldn’t find the papers, I– whoa why are you sweaty?” Genesis came bounding up to his best friend worriedly. Gabe looked like he had just run a half-marathon. His chest was heaving, his hair dampened and flat, and his face was flushed and covered by a thin layer of sweat. “Are you okay?” He asked, putting his hand on the other man’s forehead.

“Yeah man, I’m all good. Just felt hot in here, y’know?” His best friend let the lie roll easily off of his tongue, swatting his hand away. People failed to remember that Genesis was simply inexperienced in life, but he wasn’t that stupid.

“And uh– o-on second thought, never mind. I’ll look for the papers on my own later.” Gabriel was being so damn suspicious, but it was clear that he just wanted the subject to be dropped.

“Oh, okay, cool. Now if you’d excuse me, I gotta go bring Javier his–,” Genesis was about to leave when the other man gripped his wrist tight and stopped him. He sent his friend a questioning look.

“Don’t worry about that either. I uh–,” the other young man cleared his throat as if he was struggling to get out the words he wanted to say, “I-I got the things they needed while you were gone. I did things extra fast so that we could eat lunch for a long time today.”

“Really?!”

“Really.”

“Thanks, Gabe! You’re the best!” That smile was worth getting in trouble for. It had been a while since he’d seen him at ease at work and enjoying the food his mom cooked for the both of them.

“No problem, dude.” Gabe smiled tightly. It was no problem today, but he knew it was going to be a huge problem soon.

The two boys had a great lunch hour. They ate the lunch that Genesis’ mom packed for them, the large glass blue bento boxes containing a mountain of rice, soy chicken stew, and spring rolls.

When their lunch hour was over and they were back at their surveillance stations, Genesis saw that three of the spots at the front were vacant. Javier and the two other guys who usually ate lunch with him, David and Mason, still hadn’t come back from the break. He was about to ask if Gabe knew where they were but saw that his friend was smirking while looking at the empty seats. The young man then felt too scared to ask what happened, so he simply minded his own business.

He grunted as he settled back down in his seat. He logged back onto the screens and checked over his own camera angles of the Origin. Nothing was happening on the upper half of the Origin yet. The young man also took note of the notification marked “urgent” flashing on the bottom right corner of his screen. According to the timestamp of the notification, one of his coworkers during the first lunch hour sent an announcement to the entire system, informing the rest of the facility, the media, Champions residing in Halcyon, and the local government about a particular piece of information. That could only mean one thing.

He felt a chill go up and down his spine after reading the information enclosed in the announcement.

「Bottom left section of the Origin’s portal screen has been observed to be rippling. Origin’s portal is now active. Destabilization in energy levels has begun. Expect an emergence of (a) monster(s) soon.」
