LILITH

For the rest of the night after meeting Samael, I couldn't sleep.

In the bed next to me, Adam snored softly, filling the space. However, they seemed to be so far away, and Samael's aroma was still permeating my body.

I kept thinking about the angel—his feathery black wings, the sound of his voice, the way he looked at me through the window as if he were angry, as if he wanted to deal with Adam, as if he thought I was pitiful.

I felt pathetic as well.

I never wanted anyone to see me that way but an angel of the creator being the first to see my abuse at the hands of Adam was pretty unlucky.

Was he going to alert the creator to this? Would Adam be subject to punishment?

Was I a bad wife, incapable of even making my husband happy? Maybe, but I didn't give a damn. However, my issues with Adam were personal. The other women in Eden were content. I had to handle my marriage on my own, without consulting anyone else. I didn't think it necessary to inform Samael of it because of this.

At least, that was what I told myself while a part of me reflected on how he had first met me and expected a true queen, one who could make her own decisions and rule her people. Even though I didn't know him, that part of me didn't want to let him down. I also didn't want to let myself down.

But what would have happened if I had told him?

What would happen now that he knew?

Adam let out a groan and I blinked. His eyes flicked up to the ceiling as the dim sunlight entered the room via the window. He inhaled deeply before turning to face me. I thought he looked like a feverish cat. His forehead was sweaty, and his hair was unkempt and standing in odd-looking spikes. I clenched the dress I was wearing.

In a hushed voice, he asked, "Lilith, my love, why are you awake?

The fact that Adam could harm me and then act as if nothing had happened infuriated me.

"I couldn't sleep," I said, "my entire body hurts."

After Samael left last night, I sobbed as I ran to the room. When Adam found me, he had apologized the only way he knew how to, with forceful sex.

"Sorry," he bent down to kiss my forehead. It was such an intimate act that made me so angry.

He leaned in for a kiss and pressed his waist against mine, whispering, "Lilith." I immediately felt his morning bulge and sighed.

"No, I don't...I don't want to," I sputtered, "I don't want to, Adam. I feel sore and exhausted," and I hurriedly backed away from him. I need my strength for the worship later."

He clenched his jaw and fixed his gaze on mine before rolling his eyes and nodding.

He responded, "Fine, but just because of the worship."

Sometimes, Adam could be inconsiderate.

I gave him a fake beam.

He lowered his gaze and extended his thumb to trace my cheeks. I leaned into his hand, and he grinned like a proud father, like a slave owner who was pleased with his slave.

He drew me in so we could snuggle after that. My face was buried in his neck. He had a smell of sweat and new plants. With my eyes closed, I allowed my mind to wander to the two angels I was hiding in Eden.

***

Though it wasn't very large, the city's square was lovely. The concrete area was encircled by houses, which were decorated with lines of colored cloth strung in between them. A fountain stood in the center and children played around it splashing in the water.

I smiled from where I stood under a tree.

After the worship was over, the people started dancing and singing praises to the creator. Under the warm sun, their faces were adorned with grins, and their eyes were beaming with happiness.

At that moment, I felt ungrateful. They were content. Eden's people were content with their lives and way of life. While I could not stand my husband, the other wives were willing to be subservient to theirs. I was given life and a seat next to the ruler of Eden, but I wasn't satisfied. I wasn't happy.

Only briefly had I managed to get away from Adam because I had to see Samael. I questioned whether he arrived in the cave unnoticed. By now, someone ought to have alerted Adam if he was spotted. Had he and Lucifer attended the worship? Did they see all they needed to see?

"Waiting for someone, my queen?" His voice came from above me.

I softly exhaled and glanced up. If I hadn't known he was there, I wouldn't have noticed. He was sitting on a tree branch and was so cunningly camouflaged that I initially missed him. Once I saw him, it was hard to look away. He had a glum expression on his lovely face as he gazed down at me. His lips were rosy and parted, and his skin looked like porcelain.  His black hair had fallen over his forehead and the dark look in his eyes kept me where I was standing.

I managed to look away, "I was looking for you."

"Were you now?" He asked in a hoarse voice.

"Yes," I said, "where is Lucifer?"

"Somewhere in the crowd. He enjoyed the worship a lot," he responded.

My eyes searched the crowd for the blonde angel but I couldn't find him.

"So you can tell that Eden is doing fine. The people love the creator and are comfortable and pleased," I said.

"And you?"

"What?" I scowled.

He questioned, "What about you, Lilith? You're talking about the people as though you're separate from them. Are you content and happy where you are now?"

Of course, he asked that. He had seen the altercation between Adam and me the previous night. He saw Adam grab my throat in rage. I inhaled deeply. What would I say to that? Could I tell Samael about it? What would happen then?

"I am..." I paused, "why are you asking this?"

"Does your husband hurt you a lot?" He asked straightforwardly.

I raised my head, "does it matter?"

He wasn't looking at me. His gaze remained on the people. I tried to follow it, wondering if he was looking at Lucifer.

He ignored my question and instead asked, "what were you doing outside the night I arrived?"

I promptly replied, "Praying to the creator."

"For salvation?"

I lowered my gaze and shook my head, "you know, my husband has met angels. He says they're all really intimidating, but in a lovely, pure, and loving way," I said, "you're not intimidating in that way. You're different."

He took a deep breath and went silent for a moment, but I was right. Samael wasn't a conventional angel, as Lucifer had claimed. It was evidenced by his behavior, the way he spoke, the look on his face when he saw Adam that night, the way he actively sought to pierce his way into my darkest emotions, and his eyes, which had a look in them that told me he wanted to burn everything and everyone.

I wanted to know the story behind that look.

"I know I'm not," I heard him mutter, "I have questions Lilith and if you can't give me answers, I'll find them on my own."

When I swiftly glanced up at him, he had vanished.

I searched the area surrounding the tree for signs of his presence, but I was unable to locate any. I was aware that angels could fly, and I was ignorant of the extent of their abilities, but could they simply disappear into thin air?

My heart started to beat rapidly. I had the impression that Samael could be traveling in search of Adam. I had to be sure that wasn't the case.

I hurried towards the crowd, pushing through it as quickly as I could. As I walked by, a few people said hello to me, and kids rushed past me with colored powder in their hair. I forced a smile at them.

My face was brushed by an ardent wind. As dust entered my eyes, they stung. I rubbed them with my palms and then briefly blinked. When my vision got clearer, I saw him again.

Samael stood next to one of the houses, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. His gaze was on me before it shifted to the people- specifically two people.

I frowned.

Cora and Cyril appeared to be having a small quarrel. Although no one else had yet noticed, I could tell that things were about to get heated by the frown on Cyril's face and the dejected expression on Cora's.

I started to approach them while focusing on Samael. His eyes flashed with something, and he grinned at me after that.

Why was he...

The air was broken by a loud smack followed by a pained cry. I came to a complete halt and looked back at Cora.

She held on to her cheek as she stood in front of Cyril. He extended his hand and gave her another slap, causing her to fall to the ground. The crowd quickly noticed and a bunch of people made their way over to them. While the women assisted Cora in getting to her feet and led the way, several of the males grabbed Cyril and dragged him away from her.

As I followed the women, I gave Cyril a stern look before scanning the crowd for Samael. Did he have something to do with this? What happened?

He was nowhere to be found. Instead, I noticed Eloise standing next to a startled blonde, blue-eyed angel.

Lucifer.
