Gluttonous Crown Princess Chapter 8.3

Tao Ti was like a deflated ball; her head drooping, she stopped walking and tried to explain, “Actually, I’m not usually so fierce or quarrelsome... I really don’t like to make trouble at all, what happened today was an exception…”

Pei Yan also stopped. Looking at her downy little head, he had an inexplicable urge to reach out rub it.

He put his hands behind his back, pursed his lips, and said softly, “I know that they were the ones who had spoken out of turn first, you are not at fault.”

Hearing this, Tao Ti lifted her eyes to look at him, her dark grape-like eyes shining brightly as she asked tentatively, “Your Highness, do you really think so?”

Pei Yan chuckled lightly when he saw her somewhat silly little appearance, “Yes.”

His affirmative reply made all the worries in Tao Ti’s heart disappear all at once. With her eyes curved into a smile, she said in a sweet and sincere voice, “I knew that Your Highness is the best at distinguishing right from wrong.”

Pei Yan raised his brows at her straightforward compliment. After a beat, he looked at the bright sun and said softly, “We should go to the dining room now, father-in-law and mother-in-law are probably waiting.”

“All right. I’m also hungry after all the fuss this morning.” Tao Ti nodded and followed him to the dining room.

The meal was not really a good one.

The dishes were undoubtedly extremely sumptuous, but being surrounded by a table of unfamiliar relatives that she was obliged to engage in forced chitchat with, Tao Ti dared not eat much, for fear of accidentally breaking etiquette.

Pei Yan’s appetite had always been small, and he also only ate just a little today.

Sometimes, Tao Ti even wondered if he might be an immortal who survived by drinking dew. Otherwise, how could a grown man of 1.85 meters tall survive by eating so little every day?

After lunch, they sat around again and drank some tea, then, Pei Yan took Tao Ti and bade goodbye.

The carriage had been full of gifts when they arrived, and it wasn’t empty on its return either; in fact, the return gifts from Marquis Yong Wei’s manor were even more generous.

Once on the carriage, Tao Ti relaxed involuntarily.

When Pei Yan entered, he happened to see her rubbing her cheeks with her two small hands. Her cheeks were round, still with a little baby fat, white and tender with a natural healthy pink, like a plump, sweet peach in early summer.

Tao Ti wasn’t aware herself when she had begun to develop an unexplainable sense of trust in Pei Yan. In front of him, she didn’t need to be tensed all the time, and could show her true self.

Seeing him looking at her, she broke into a rueful and explained, “My face is all stiff from smiling.”

Pei Yan sat down easily and asked, “You don’t like crowds?”

“It’s not that I don’t like crowds, I just don’t like that kind of crowd… I’d be very happy to be with friends I know well,” replied Tao Ti solemnly.

Pei Yan adjusted the incense burner on the small table elegantly and said softly, “If you feel bored in the palace, you can also invite your friends to play with you.”

Tao Ti pursed her lips in thought, the original owner’s friendships were mostly “plastic”, but there seemed to be a chubby little lady called Xu Wencui with whom she seemed to be on pretty good terms?

As she pondered, the carriage slowly began to move.

Tao Ti asked Pei Yan, “Your Highness, did you eat your fill just now?”

With some amusement, Pei Yan asked in return, “Are you not full?”

Taoti was startled and a little embarrassed, but she still nodded honestly and said softly, “There were so many people at the table, I couldn’t really eat with ease. But I saw that you didn’t eat much either, why don’t we…”

She paused, observed Pei Yan’s expression, and asked, “Why don’t we eat something outside?”

During their journey to her maiden home, she had noticed that there were a number of restaurants and inns along the street, and her foodie heart had long been eager for action. In modern times, there were many food bloggers who specialised in ancient delicacies, and now that she was herself in ancient times, it would be such a waste of her transmigration if she did not try the delights of ancient restaurants.

Pei Yan did not immediately refuse, nor did he immediately agree. He only lifted the curtain and looked out at the weather. “It seems about to rain.”

Tao Ti leaned towards him and also craned her neck to take a look, only to see dark skies looming in the distance, carrying the vague sense of rain.

“Ah, it was still fine at first, why has it become cloudy all of a sudden,” she muttered in disappointment.

This position brought the two of them very close; Pei Yan could smell the faint fragrance of her body and could also see the soft, tiny hairs on her snow-white skin.

His eyelashes drooped slightly, covering the dark colour in his eyes, and he was silent for a moment. Suddenly, as if controlled by some spirit, he said, “Another day, then.”

After saying that, a strange feeling crept into his heart. He could have clearly chosen to be silent just now; after all, dining together in restaurants was not among the necessary acts.

The two of them only needed to look harmonious on the surface; it’s not like they were a real couple.

Tao Ti sat up straight. A pair of beautiful eyes looked fixedly at Pei Yan as she confirmed, “Your Highness, you’ll take me out another day?”

Those black eyes were like stars in the night sky, shining with radiance—this was a foodie’s desire for good food.

Pei Yan met her expectant gaze, his voice was slow and gentle, “Mm, we’ll come out again another day. There are indeed a few good restaurants in the city.”

Tao Ti beamed broadly, “Thank you, Your Highness!”

This brilliant smile was so bright and enchanting that a flash of surprise flashed in Pei Yan’s eyes.

There were many women who admired him, but she was the first to smile at him like this.

Without a change in his demeanour, he clenched his fists, his thin lips pressed straight.
