The sound of fire crackled behind me and light reflected off on the iron prison bars. The child’s eyes widened and he backed away from me, his finger still extended pointing at whatever the hell was standing behind me.

Any sudden movements could set the monster off. I reached for my spellbag and slipped two fingers inside and felt for the right spell card. Heat radiated off the creature as it moved closer.

I couldn't take it anymore. I spun around drawing a spell card to defend myself and looked into the glowing eyes of a living shadow. Flames whirled and danced inside of its ethereal form.

What the hell is that?

The Ash Guardian was vaguely humanoid and made of swirling ashes with flickers of tiny flames dancing inside it. It held no weapons but it stretched its wispy fingers towards me and my blood grew cold as it cast Wither and drained my strength.

I raised a trembling hand that clutched a spell card and my body moved at a glacial pace. The card fell from my shivering fingertips and burst into magical light.

The Ash Guardian did not like the light it recoiled into the dark and its glowing eyes watched me from the deep shadows.

The Polyblade spell resolved and a javelin appeared in my hand.

Thin beams of silver magic shot out of the Ash Guardians extended finger tips and sapped my strength again. The javelin grew heavy in my hands. If the monster hit me with another Wither strike I’d have no strength left to stand let alone fight.

The guardian raised its hands for another life-draining attack and I grounded my left leg and pushed off with my right leg and released the javelin.

It whistled as it flew straight into the monster’s chest but the ash body parted and the javelin passed straight through and hit the iron bars of the prison. Sparks showers and lit up the room. In that moment of illumination I saw the silhouette of a guard crouched behind a wall. He had to be the summoner.

As the light went out I dropped to the floor and slammed the Jagged Prison card on the cold hard ground. The earth tore up as the spell rippled across the floor, it smashed through the prison gates and snatched up the unsuspecting guard pinning him in place.

The prison gates swung open and kids poured out of the cell like an angry mob. A child picked up a rock and hurled it at the immobile guard. It smashed into the man's head and knocked him unconscious. The rest of the children copied the child and soon they were all launching rocks at the unconscious man.

The spell broke and the Ash Guardian was sucked into a mini vortex which pulled it back into the nether where it had come from.

* +670 Exp

The kids continued beating the crap out of the incapacitated guard. I really didn't give a damn. After the horrors these kids had been forced to endure a little bit of revenge was owed to them.

A status message appeared.

* Choose an evolution path

-Mold Earth: Shape the ground beneath you with your mind. Spell effect is limited by the caster’s level.

-Iron Maiden: Summon a casket with spikes on the inside. Impales any target inside it dealing Piercing and Dark magic damage.

My pounding headache returned. It felt like someone had forced a hammer through my skull sideways. My vision blurred and I attempted to swipe away the message but instead I selected an evolution path.

* Jagged Prison evolved to Mold Earth

I was in too much pain to care.

“What’s wrong mister?” asked a child.

I stumbled against a wall for support.

“Ahri, where is she?”

The child shook his head.

“Blooming ceremony,” I said through gritted teeth as another wave of pain and nausea hit me.

The child took my hand and I followed without really knowing where I was going. My head was so messed up that I don't know how long I followed him for. At times the pain faded and I could see clearly but most of the way the agony was so intense it felt like I was giving birth through my eyeballs.

Eventually the child stopped and I could see panic on his face.

“What is it?” I asked and that's when I heard it. A child weeping in the distance and someone humming a tune.

“It's there, sir,” said the child. “I can't go further.”

The look of terror on the childs face told me all I needed to know about the Blooming ceremony.

Flint POV

Flint ran his hand along the walls of the tunnel then licked his finger tips.

“Tastes like home.”

Tunnels had a comforting earthy odor that reminded Flint of sitting on his mothers shoulders on trips through the rocky hillside where he was raised.

His mother was famous for two things. Her stone soup and her ability to multitask. Those were also the main reasons why she was such a hit at titan orgies. People just couldn't get enough of her soup.

Flint wished his mother was there to share some of her wisdom with him. Not for the first time he was questioning his life's decisions. The latest was why he was herding a pack of wild children through a tunnel inside of a mountain.

“Are we there yet?” asked a boy with his finger jammed up his nose.

“If you mean annoying me,” said Flint. “Then yes you are there.”

Flint didn't understand why anyone would want to lock up a bunch of children. They were a pain in the ass but not so bad that they needed to be thrown into prison. He would have to have a talk with the local guard captain when they got back to town.

A young girl who had latched to his legs awhile back began to sob and drool on him. He tried his best to ignore the child as he kept walking.

“Did you remember to bring my blankie?” she asked.

Flint continued his march and even though the child was jostled with every step he took she stubbornly refused to let go.

“I'm hungry!” she said.

Flint kept walking.

“I need to go to the loo.”

Flint shook his leg trying to dislodge the child but the grubby thing just clung to him like a monkey. He just hoped the child wouldn't pee on him.

He was beginning to grow tired of the human children. They had a strange smell like tangy onions and they didn't shut up for a moment. They’d been arguing about the same thing for over ten minutes. So he’d tried to drown out the noise by chewing on a mouthful of stones but still their incessant whining managed to penetrate into his brain.

“He's pushing me,” said one of the children.

“I'm not pushing. He's on my side of the tunnel!”

“No, it's my side!”

“He started it!”

“No, he did!”

Flint finally had enough.

“I don’t care who started it,” he said. “If I have to come back there I’ll finish it.”

The kids fell silent and that could be heard was his voice echoing off of the tunnel walls

“Are we there yet?” asked the first kid.

“I hate kids,” said Flint.
