The villager elder declared that the duel between Marrick and I was a tie and then he told us to get the hell out of town before he called the guards.

So with nothing else to do we decided to make our way down the river to the village of Hento. We would stay there for a night and then we’d wake up early and catch the ferry to Swindon the following morning, from Swindon it was a short ride by wagon to the Mages Guild.

Of course, because I’d clearly pissed off some god in my previous life, it was so misty all day that we could barely make out our hand in front of our own faces.

We stopped for lunch under an elm tree and whilst Ahri was feeding Hotdog, her karakul pet, an idea came to me.

The karakul was basically a ball of fluff when it was small but if I cast Rapid Growth on it the little sheep transformed into a massive fluffy ram with twin spiral horns and a golden bell around its neck. I don't know where the bell came from but I wasn't complaining. We now had a mount- well at least for as long as the spell lasted.

“You sit in the front,” said Ahri. “I don't want your erection poking in my back the whole journey.”

“Really Ahri, I'm not a horny teenager anymore. Besides, it wouldn't be erect for the whole journey. Maybe ten minutes at most, depending on how bumpy the ride is. If it's really bumpy it could be two minutes but then you’d have a wet back for the rest of the journey.”

I climbed onto the karakul’s back and held a hand out to Ahri.

“Talasin, you really need to stop saying the first thing that comes to mind.”

I pulled her onto the karakul and she rested her arms around my waist.

“I thought you liked my honesty?” I said with a smile.

Ahri snorted and said, “Remember when you complimented Quinn the blacksmith’s giant breasts?”

“That was an accident,” I said. “How was I to know that the blacksmith was a guy with a hormone imbalance? And you must admit even with a hairy chest those breasts were magnificent.”

Hotdog the karakul plodded along at a steady pace, his fluffy coat beneath me and Ahri’s nipples pressing into my back made the trip pretty enjoyable. A breeze had blown the mist away and the sun had come out.

Ahri and I played a game where she drew a picture on my back with her finger and I had to guess what she was drawing. It was near impossible to guess, she was terrible at drawing and most of her clues involved food ingredients.

Ahri ran a finger down my arm and said, “What are you thinking?”

I was imagining her naked on a fleece blanket in front of a fireplace but I figured I should probably not tell her that.

“I'm just thinking about what we are going to do when we reach Alhaven,” I said. “I guess we’ll join the Mages Guild and I’ll be able to get the spell cards I need to build my god killer deck.”

I paused as her hand stroked my thumb in a ridiculously sensual way.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked.

Ahri rested her head against my back and sighed then she said, “I was wondering if you’d go looking for Ysolda now that you are healed.”

I hadn't thought about the Mesmers in days. What did that say about me? Ysolda and I kinda had a thing. Well she seemed to like me and she was sexy as hell but maybe that was all there was to it. Apart from all of her flirting, I really didn't know anything about her.

“Whose Ysolda?” I asked.

Ahri pressed her body against mine and whispered, “I never thought I’d feel this way.”

I found it hard to believe. Ahri was a young beautiful girl who’d been around forever.

“You must have had quite a few relationships in the last thousand years.”

I felt Ahri shake her head against my back and she said, “I was raised as Belladeon’s shrine maiden, the only men I ever got to see were old monks and my father.” She fell silent for a moment and I felt her tracing a shape on my back.

“I ascended at seventeen,” she said, “Part of the trade-off of living in a god's realm is the complete loss of any desires-including sexual desires.”

That sounded like a bad deal.

“Was it worth it?” I asked.

“I never aged, I never felt pain, I didn't feel much of anything really. Except for loneliness, that was my constant companion.”

“If it was so shitty then why are we trying to get your realm back?”

Ahri laughed but before she could say anything Hotdog stopped walking.

She patted the karakul’s side and said, “What is it boy?”

I jumped off the back of the karakul and sank deep into the mud. I pulled out my leg and my boot got sucked right off my foot.

Ahri sprung down beside me and laughed as she took a step towards me and started to sink.

I pulled myself out of the mud and back onto solid ground and said, “Stop messing around.”

Ahri’s frowning face changed to panic as she sank deeper.

“I'm not messing around, grab my hand.”

“I'm not that stupid, Ahri. “I’ll grab your hand and you'll pull me in.”

I realized she wasn't messing around when the mud reached her waist. But if I took her hand we’d both sink. I searched around for something to use and found a stick and then I laid on my stomach on firmer ground and stretched the stick out to her.

“Grab hold of this,” I said.

Ahri caught hold of the stick and as soon as she pulled on it the stick snapped in two and I was left with a stump in my hand.

“Do something,” she cried as she began to sink again.

Possibilities flickered through my mind. I could cast Leap of Faith and try to snatch her out of the mud as I flew by- I’d most likely miss though.

I could use Mold Earth but the mud was so sloshy it would probably make her sink faster.

That left Rapid Growth, Even though we had almost been eaten by a giant spriggan the spell card was definitely paying off.

Green light spread around me as Rapid Growth took hold of the stick. It grew thicker and longer and a leaf sprouted on the end of it as it stretched toward Ahri.

Ahri’s muddy fingertips caught hold of the stick and she grappled with it until she had a decent hold. I pulled, hand over fist, until Ahri was lying beside me covered from her neck down in mud.

“It feels like I've been dragged through a mammoth's anus,” she said.

I laughed as we laid side by side looking up at the late afternoon sky.

Ahri went down to the river and transformed her clothing into a bathing suit. Even with a layer of mud covering her there was no way of hiding her sexy curves.

“Could you stop leering at me like a serial killer,” she said.

“I'm just making sure you're ok.”

“I'm sure. Then why does it look like you’ve cast Rapid Growth on yourself?”

“Fine,” I moaned. “It’s getting dark. I’ll build a shelter for us so we can stay here for the night.”

I summoned Flint and Bel.

Flint appeared first and bowed dramatically and said, “Yes milord.”

Bel appeared a moment later, nibbling on a dried persimmon. “What can I do for you Master?” she asked.

“We are staying here for the night,” I said. “So we will need firewood- lots of it. Can you fetch that for us Bel?”

She nodded and vanished into the marshlands.

Flint was on his hands and knees collecting pebbles.

“Do you really eat those?” I asked.

“I'm a connoisseur, Talasin. You wouldn't understand.”

“You’re probably right,” I said. “Once you’ve finished sucking the moisture out of those rocks I could use your help with building a mud hut.”

I found a dry spot close to the river and Flint and I removed the rocks and flattened the ground in preparation for the building.

A toasty fire and small hut on the edge of the marshes, sounds cozy enough for a romantic evening. This time I’ll let Ahri do the talking and just agree with whatever she says.

I racked my brain for building designs. I needed something grand- something impressive and something I could create with Mold Earth. The problem would be the roof. If I built a squarish mud hut then the roof would just cave in so I would need something round.

I drew Mold Earth and placed the card in the center of the clearing. The familiar green lights surrounded me and the earth shook beneath my feet as a circle of mud rose around Flint and I.

“Dig us out if it collapses on us,” I said.

Flint grunted in response.

I drew on more power and bent the walls and compacted the mud as I continued to shape the building. Half way through the building I paused to take a breath and then I recast the spell and continued. Finally the roof came together above our heads and we were in darkness.

“That's one way to get me alone,” Flint whispered beside me in a husky voice.

“A door,” I shouted. “Right now.”

“I like it when you play hard to get,” breathed Flint.

As I stood outside the mud igloo admiring it from different angles I spotted Ahri naked bathing in the river.

Fuck, is this a trap. Do I fail if I look?”

“Flint,” I said. “Stand here.”

I turned my back to Ahri and positioned the titan so his chest was facing the river. I breathed steam onto his ebony black chest and shined it with my coat.

Flint began to breathe heavily and he said, “I have a strong policy of never complaining when someone gives me a firm rub,” he said. “But I feel like there's something I'm missing.”

“Don't move,” I said.

“What?”

“Your body it's…”

“Fabulous?” he said.

“It's reflective,” I continued.

Flint looked over his shoulder at Ahri and then he crossed his arms blocking the reflection.

“Talasin, I never thought I’d say this but I miss the days when your penis was rotting off.”

Ahri finished bathing and decided that she would be in charge of dinner. The one time she had cooked and I’d lied and told her it was tasty had cemented her as the team’s official cook.

I wasn't the only one upset about it though. Ahri had fashioned a pot out of Flint’s cupped hands and she placed them over a roaring fire and told him to keep still.

“This is humiliating,” said Flint. “I was a town guard and now I'm used as either a mirror or a glorified frying pan.”

I held a log upright and Bel cut through it with her razor sharp nails.

“That's the last one,” I said as I tossed the chopped wood on the pile. “So what's for dinner?”

Flint snorted and said, “Imagine the most scrumptious meal you have ever eaten. Now hold that thought, hopefully it will sustain you through the horrors of what you are about to eat.”

Ahri slept in the middle of the mud hut, wrapped in swathes of silk, with her arms and legs spread like a starfish. I don't know what I’d done wrong but whatever it was, it meant I was sleeping curled in a ball in the corner of the hut.

It was cold and my bladder was full and I’d been contemplating going outside to pee for the last hour. All of a sudden a gut curdling shriek of agony tore through the midnight air. The sound reminded me of the cat fights that used to wake me up in the middle of the night.

I stuck my head out the door. The full moon was out and a thick mist had rolled in during the night and settled over the marsh.

I heard another shriek of pain and then I saw something moving. It was man sized and dripping shadows as it floated across the marsh. I could feel terror reaching out to grip my heart. Whatever this creature was, it was powerful and deadly and heading straight at us. I panic scanned the creature.

That was the highest level magical beast I had ever scanned. It scared the crap out of me. I felt frozen in place as I watched the Nightstalker glided onwards and in it's wake animals and monster alike curled up and died from pure terror.

Ahri stirred beside me and said, “Come back to bed.”

I stayed fixed by the door frozen in place, my hands trembling uncontrollably.

“You’re beginning to freak me out,” she said.

When I still didn't move she tossed aside her blanket and crawled on hands and knees beside me and pulled me back inside the hut. I was still trembling so intensely that she had to slap me to get me to say anything.

“Nightstalker,” I said in a low shaky voice.

“What the hell is a Nightstalker?” she asked.

She poked her head out the door and then instantly recoiled like she’d been slapped across the face with a wet blanket.

She bit her lower lip to stop it from trembling and whispered, “Hold me.”

I pulled her in close and shut my eyes as all around our little mud hut the wails continued as the Nightstalker strolled through the marshes leaving a trail of death in its wake.
