Chapter 116: Adverse effects

Seth looked at the pleading look in Gales’s eyes and sighed as he extended a hand toward the man.

“Stand up. I will help you, but you don’t need to beg.”

Gales hesitantly stood up, but his surroundings changed just as he was about to ask if Seth had a horse to chase after his daughter. Looking around, he couldn’t understand what was happening, but the sight of his old horse being chased by a blood fog in their direction made him swallow his questions.

Seth looked at the horse running wildly towards him and teleported on its back, grabbed little Isabelle before teleporting right next to Gales again.

He glanced at the silent baby, who had fallen asleep from crying, before handing her back to Gales and walking towards the fog.

The fog once more materialized in human form, a ravenous-looking woman appearing before Seth. She looked between Seth and Gales with a frown before asking: “Where is my brother?”

Seth smiled and said: “If you don’t want to find out yourself, turn around and walk away.”

The woman snorted, not overthinking Seth’s words, as he flew right at him, her nails being covered into a slightly bloody fog and turning into sharp claws, which she used to swing at his head.

Seth sighed and sent a wave of destruction forward, wiping the whole blood fog forming the woman before walking back towards Gales.

‘Give me the location of her core.’

Once the system complied, Seth found it too bothersome to go chase since her core was out of his teleportation range, so he just let her go for now.

The horse had also reached Gales by now, and he was rubbing its head while carrying his sleeping girl and staring at Seth. As Seth’s eyes landed back on him, Gales bowed and said: “Thank you, Sir Ascended. You have saved both my life and the future of my line.”

Seth glanced at the grateful look in Gales’ eyes and sighed as he shook his head.

“You don’t really owe me anything. Everything that happened to your family is my fault.”

Gales seemed surprised by Seth’s words and asked: “What does Sir Ascended mean by that?”

“Let’s talk somewhere else. I’ll take us all to the Capital.”

Without giving Gales time to say anything, Seth used area teleportation to move the three of them and even the horse at the Capital’s entrance. Once outside one of the gates, Seth looked once more at Gales and said: “If you want your answers, find me inside The Brawler Inn, room 25.”

“Wait.” Said Gales, noticing Seth intended to leave. “We also don’t have someplace to stay and intended to rent a room at an inn. We’ll come with you.”

“You don’t understand.” Said Seth, turning towards the guards barely visible in the distance. “I can’t go in through the main gate.”

Gales understood what Seth meant and nodded before saying: “I see. Then I’ll look for sir after we settle inside the inn.”

After Seth teleported back to the inn, he didn’t have to wait much, about two hours, until a slight knock sounded at his door. Sitting up from his bed, he walked to the door and opened it, inviting Gales inside.

Gales sat down on a chair at the table and remained to stare at Seth, his intention clear. He wanted to know what Seth meant when he said he was responsible for what had happened to his family.

Seth sighed and said: “As you have already guessed, I am indeed an ascended, but that’s not all. I am the king of the Blood Kingdom in the south.”

Gales seemed surprised but, not really that impressed, more like curious. He was curious how someone like Seth could rule over a bunch of criminals and bandits.

Seth didn’t give him time to ask any questions as he continued. “After I reached the Blood Kingdom to take it over, I learned about a race that dwelled deep inside the ground, feeding on the people of the kingdom. Not wishing that upon my people, I found a way to drive the blood race away.”

Sighing again, he looked into Gales’s eyes and said: “Now, you must understand what I mean. The entire continent has to deal with the blood plague, as you call it, because I drove the blood race away from the Blood Kingdom.”

Gales lowered his head, his fists clenched tightly under his sleeves as he asked: “Why did you save me? Also, why did you tell me this? You could have kept it to yourself.”

“For why I saved you, it was mostly a coincidence. As for why I told you? What point would lying to you have? After everything you went through, you deserve to know the truth, at least.”

Gales nodded and stood up, walking towards the door with a conflicted look. Once he reached there, he turned around and asked: “One more question. What is the king of blood doing alone in the capital of another kingdom?”

“Heading for the meeting inside Hope to help the continent deal with the blood race.” Replied Seth.

Gales nodded again and walked out without saying another word.

<Gales is right. Host could have easily assured that he won’t find out the truth.>

‘It’s fine. Even if Gales is angry, once he calms down, he will realize that, at the end of it, the blood race is responsible for his wife’s death.”

The following day passed with Seth sitting inside his room, cultivating quietly. In the evening, the system informed him the king had agreed to his advisers’ suggestion of taking him to the meeting.

Since the following day was the day of their departure and he had nothing else better to do, Seth continued cultivating throughout the night as well.

On the morning of the next day, he was pretty disappointed that Gales hadn’t returned to seek him out, but it was time for him to leave.

Changing his looks back into those of Otis, he teleported inside the real Otis’s chambers inside the soldier barracks of the city and waited patiently.

After a knock on the door, he was informed of the journey to the meeting in Hope, and Seth joined the large gathering at the northern gate.

There, the king, his advisers, a few carriages, and around 50 soldiers of the king’s personal guard were gathered.

Seth expected to be assigned guard duty with the rest of the soldiers, but that was not what happened.

For some reason, he was assigned to one of the carriages. The only ones allowed inside a carriage were the king, the advisers, and the staff responsible for cooking.

Walking inside his carriage, Seth noticed it was almost filled with young women.

‘System, why are so many young women traveling with us north?’

<The king is known for his sexual drive, so when the cooking personnel was being chosen, he requested all of them to be young women.>

‘And why am I here?’

<When the king agreed to his adviser’s suggestion to bring host along, he didn’t care much about it and just said to have host travel with the cooking staff.>

Seth sighed and sat down on a bench to the side. The women eyed him with interest, whispering and giggling almost continuously. The journey had not even started, and Seth was beginning to worry about his lust source going wild.

A few minutes later, the procession started moving, and Seth closed his eyes to cultivate. Not even two hours after their departure, the carriage curtain parted, and a soldier peeked inside.

Fixing his eyes on one of the girls, he said: “The king demands your presence inside his carriage.”

Seth peeked with an eye and watched the girl walk out with a red face but quickly ignored it and returned to cultivating.

Not even an hour later, the carriage curtain parted again, and the girl walked back in.

Her hair and clothes were in disarray, and she lowered her head as she made her way to sit to the side, away from the others.

Since Seth also tried to sit as far from the others as possible, she ended up sitting right next to him. The other girls looked like they wanted to ask her questions, but with Seth sitting next to her, his eyes closed, they were hesitant to do so.

One of the bolder ones in the group of eight total women finally couldn’t take it anymore and asked: “Hey Katy, how was it?”

Some of the others were emboldened by the question and quickly started gossiping.

“Yeah, I heard the young king is quite good.”

“One of the castle’s maids said that he had her for an entire night and never got tired.”

“Kings must truly be built differently.”

Katy, the girl that was the focus of the entire carriage by now, seemed hesitant to even make eye contact with the others, and her hand found its way to Seth’s arm, grabbing hold of it on instinct.

Seth looked to the side once he noticed someone gripping his arm and saw the young Katy looking at him with a pleading look through her bangs.

“Can you ladies make less noise? I am quite tired and want to rest for a bit.” He said with a sigh before closing his eyes again.

The women who just spoke seemed quite displeased with Seth’s tone, but they didn’t dare say anything about it and reigned in their curiosity as they started whispering between each other.

The hold on his arm stopped, and a quiet whisper reached his ear. “Thank you.”

After traveling the entire day, the evening soon came, and the carriages stopped. The women walked out and started cooking food, but Seth remained inside, as did Katy.

Seth planned on quickly drinking a vial of energy, so her presence there was quite inconvenient.

“Aren’t you going to help with the food?” he asked, opening his eyes to look at Katy.

Katy was startled by Seth addressing her, and she quickly shook her head with a red face. “The king allowed me to skip my duties for today after…”

“Oh. Alright then.” Seth sighed, deciding to drink an energy vial once everyone was asleep.

Katy lowered her head and rubbed her thighs with her hands as she asked: “Can I ask why sir is traveling north with us?”

“The king has requested me to attend the meeting.”

Katy nodded, her head still lowered, before falling silent. A few minutes later, she asked: “Is sir a soldier?”

“An infiltrator.” Replied Seth.

“Then, can sir fight?”

“I can.”

Seth’s succinct replies didn’t bother Katy as she kept asking random questions, like where he was from, how he became a soldier, etc. After getting tired of asking the system for answers, he got pretty pissed and opened his eyes to look to the side.

“Why do you keep asking me these questions?”

Katy was startled and blushed as she fidgeted in her seat before saying. “I - I was just bored of sitting in silence. I’m sorry if I bothered sir.”

Seth sighed and closed his eyes again. “There’s no bother, but I’m trying to think about something.”

Katy nodded and remained silent. Once the food was ready, the king, his advisers, and the soldiers gathered outside to eat and drink, but Seth declined the invitation and remained inside.

To his surprise, Katy did the same, but he didn’t read that much into it and resumed his cultivation. After dinner, most girls, except one, returned and lay in the center of the carriage to sleep.

Seth remained standing on his bench, as did Katy, who fell asleep with her head on his arm.

In the morning, as the convoy was getting ready to resume its journey, the girl that was missing last night returned to the carriage and laid down to sleep without saying a single word.

Seth imagined what had happened and ignored it as he resumed his cultivation.

The girl only woke up around noon, and the other girl started questioning her immediately. The girl bit her lower lip and turned towards Katy, who was resting her head on Seth.

“You bitch, why didn’t you tell us?”

Katy was startled, and her body shook as she grabbed tightly on Seth’s arm. Seth opened his eyes and looked between the two as he asked the system.

‘What is she on about?’

Raising an eyebrow, Seth looked toward Katy and asked the system to let him see through her clothes. There were a few bruises here and there, but as he has sometimes gone too far, he didn’t find it strange.

Katy pulled on Seth’s arm, making him stop, as she said hesitantly: “I - I didn’t know. He hit me a few times but didn’t… didn’t cut me.”

Once her words ended, she pulled the sleeve of her arm upwards, revealing some hand-shaped bruises. “There are more, but…” she stopped her words here and looked towards Seth, her meaning clear.

Seth sighed and closed his eyes while turning his head to the side.

“He really didn’t cut you.” Muttered the woman on the floor before lifting her top to reveal a deep cut on her breast. There were many other bruises and cuts all over her body.

“What will we do?” asked another woman in the carriage, a trace of deep fear in her voice.

“Yeah, what if he will even kill one of us?” said another one.

“What can we do? He’s the king. If he wants to kill us, he can.” Said one of the older women there. “We can only blame our bad luck for getting chosen to accompany him.”

Everyone lowered their head at her words, realizing she was speaking the truth and all they could do was resign themselves to their fates.
