Chapter 37: Mother issues

Maya and Seth froze while Nash also wiped the grin off his face. The problem was not Seth’s age as much as Maya’s. She looked young for her actual age, but her appearance was still that of a woman in her mid or late twenties.

Seth was about to explain when Hilda surprised him by grabbing Maya’s hand and pulling her upstairs.

“You two stay here.”

Seth smiled wryly as he looked at Maya’s panicking face. As he was wondering whether or not to peek at their conversation, a hard hand pressed on his shoulder and his father came close to whisper in his ear.

“Good job, son. Those are some nice pumps she’s carrying.”

Seth’s face froze and turned towards his father, only to see him smile like an old lecher at him. Using his perfect control to prevent his expression from changing, he removed his father’s arm and walked towards the front door.

As he was about to close the door, Seth saw two middle-aged mercenaries looking at him with awkward looks. Not in the mood for whatever was running through their minds, Seth closed the door in their faces and went upstairs to his room.

Falling in his bed on his back, Seth looked towards the ceiling and asked the system: ‘Show me the royal family’s movements related to me.’

Upon careful consideration, he didn’t want to see what his mother was speaking about with Maya.

<The shadow corps have snooped around and investigated your movements in the city during the time you were away, but found nothing. Now that you are back, they have reported it to the king and are mobilizing a small squad for constant surveillance. >

‘Any plans on doing anything about my parents?’

<Not yet, but the disappearance of the squad sent to follow you south has indeed raised some suspicions within their ranks. >

‘Keep monitoring them. I hired all those guys, but I’m not taking any chances. What are the brats doing?’

<Rebecca, Alexandra, and Lisa are back to their families, telling them stories from the journey. Caitlin and Leora are at the academy, studying. >

‘That being said, how did Maya find out where I live?’

<The previous owner of this house reported the change of ownership to the city management. Maya found out about you buying a new house from Caitlin and went to management to find out where you live. >

“That girl. It looks like I need to take away even more of her food.” Muttered Seth before closing his eyes and starting to cultivate.

It was hours later when his door slowly opened and Maya peeked her head inside: “Are you sleeping?”

Seth opened his eyes and looked at her red face before patting the bed next to him.

Once Maya sat down in a reserved manner, Seth chuckled and said: “That’s what you get from showing up here like that and jumping me.”

Maya sighed and said softly: “I missed you…”

Seth pulled her in his arms before saying: “I missed you too, but I was going to come to see you later today after I took care of everything with my parents. What did my mother say?”

Maya bit her lip before shaking her head without answering and burying her head in Seth’s chest. Heaving another sigh, Seth started rubbing her back before asking: “Are you alright?”

Feeling her nod, he asked nothing else and continued rubbing her back while simply laying on the bed in each other’s arms, with Maya eventually falling asleep.

On the morning of the next day, Maya woke up and said: “I need to go to class. You should hurry and return to the academy as well. Iris is probably still pissed about you missing the recruitment.”

Seth bent down and kissed her forehead before saying: “I gave the kids a week off. Don’t worry, I’ll deal with Iris.”

Nodding, Maya gave him a peck on the lips before sitting up and leaving for the academy. When Seth came down from his room, he found his parents already up, with his mother giving him a death stare. His father was also staying by her side like a docile puppy.

Before he could even say a word, his mother said: “Seth, you should stop seeing that woman.”

“Why?” asked Seth calmly before taking a seat at the table as well. Pearl ignored their conversation and started serving food.

“Why? She’s at least ten years older than you. She only saw your talent and is taking advantage of you. I think you can find yourself a better woman, about your age, who can love you for who you are.”

“What makes you think that’s what she’s doing?” asked Seth, curious how this idea came into his mother’s mind.

“What else could it be? With such an age difference, why would she be so forward about your relationship? Also, jumping on you like that, in front of your parents, is no behaviour worthy of a woman. She’s been…”

‘System, what the hell did talk about?’ he couldn’t remain blind anymore since it looked like his mother got many wrong impressions.

<Your mother asked how far you’ve gone in your relationship and after Maya told her you had sex, your mother didn’t let her speak anymore as she kept berating her about how she’s been taking advantage of you, how she only stays with you for your talent and so on. She even called her a whore and told her she should break the relationship off.>

Seth frowned, getting angrier by the second before asking: ‘Where did she get the idea I was such a talented person?’

<The girls kept praising you as the best teacher in the academy and so on.>

Looking at his mother’s angry expression as she kept speaking, Seth cleared his throat to interrupt her. If it was anyone else, he might have killed them for calling Maya a whore, but he couldn’t really do anything to his mother.

“Mom, I think you got the wrong idea. First of all, Maya is not someone who’s taking advantage of me. It doesn’t look like you know, but she’s also a teacher at the academy and she’s a lot stronger than I am. She’s actually the head teacher.”

“Second, I was the one who started the relationship, not her. The age difference is indeed quite large, and by that, I mean over 100 years, but it doesn’t matter for any of us.”

As his words ended, Seth stood up and walked out the door. He didn’t think his mother would be so rude to Maya, but now he felt he had a duty to speak to her.

After knocking on Maya’s classroom door, Seth walked in and found Maya behind her desk with a book in hand. She smiled when she saw Seth and asked: “Teacher Seth, why are you here?”

“Do you have a moment?” asked Seth.

Maya nodded and told the students to study by themselves before walking with Seth out. When they were outside, Seth hugged her in his arms and said: “I’m sorry for everything she said. I did not know.”

Maya’s eyes turned red as she shook her head and said: “It’s fine. She was not wrong. You do not know how many people I’ve slept with, even I lost count.”

Seth sighed, and they both disappeared from the hallway of the study hall and appeared on the roof. Maya already knew about his space source, but the sudden teleportation still surprised her.

Before she could even ask a question, Seth said: “You had sex with hundreds of people before and I already knew that when I started dating you. I never cared, and it’s not my mother’s place to do it for me. As for you taking advantage of me, do you think I’m just a 16-year-old kid? Everything my mother said was wrong.”

Running his fingers through her vermilion hair, Seth’s face turned serious, and he said: “I love you Maya and I want you by my side. I want you to be there for me as I sit on that throne of godhood again. ”

Seth’s words echoed deep inside Maya and she felt it hard to even breathe for a moment. He has said the same words before, but now it felt different. Like a natural and inevitable conclusion for their future.

Coming back to her senses, she moved her hand over his and nodded. “I will. I said I love you too, didn’t I?”

Seth smiled and kissed her lips. As she parted her lips and was about to kiss him back, Maya’s eyes widened and she broke the kiss as she asked: “Godhood? Again?”

Seth smiled and didn’t answer her question before kissing her again. Maya struggled for a moment before relenting and kissing him back.

“Are you feeling better now?”, asked Seth once he finally broke the kiss.

Maya nodded before saying: “Yes, but I still don’t want your mother to hate me.”

“She’ll come around, eventually. Let’s take you back to class. I’ll come by in the evening so we can continue our reunion.” Replied Seth with a grin before teleporting just Maya back into the empty study hall.

Seeing her look up with an angry expression, Seth chuckled and disappeared as well, heading for Iris’s office since he was already in the academy.

After entering Iris’s office, he found her reading a book while sipping on a drink. She looked up from the book and asked: “Did you kill those shadows?”

Seth was quite surprised she knew about it and took a seat before nodding. “I killed some people snooping around. I didn’t know who they were.”

Iris sighed and put down the book and the drink.

“You know the king will just send more, don’t you? You also got me in trouble.”

Seth shrugged and said: “I will not let suspicious people near my students like that.”

Iris raised an eyebrow and said: “The king also ordered me to make the ascension ceremony for those students in your class. You should let them know I will host the ceremony in one week.”

“That’s fine, but they still want to remain in my class.” Replied Seth.

“You know that’s not possible. Ascended must take teaching positions if they want to remain in the academy.”

“Are you sure that’s a good choice? I should inform you one of them broke through the second shell already.”

Iris’s eyes went wide, and she asked: “Where did you have the vials for that? Don’t tell me you’ve been also buying from the black market.” She already knew Seth’s theory was flawless, but she also knew no one could gather enough energy from the atmosphere to break through so fast.

“I have my own ways. So, what do you say? Can’t you make it happen now that you know that?”

Iris frowned and thought for a second before shaking her head. “No way. The king will for sure make them an offer to join the army. If they refuse, since they are from noble families, they will be asked to remain as teachers here.”

“Hmm, if I were to get the royals off your back, will you allow them to remain in my class?” asked Seth next, some ideas taking root in his head.

“I can’t do that, but I could make a special ascended class. That is, if the king approves it, which he won’t. This will hurt the army too much.”

“I will see if I can do it. Can you try sending a proposal?”

“Fine. Also, I need to meet with your parents. I still have sent no one to investigate your origin before and now that they’re here…”

“That’s fine.” Replied Seth before giving his parents’ address to the headmistress and taking his leave.
