“Haah~ I see. That Tojo-san is approaching you for an engagement.”

“Well… That’s how it is.”

Lunch break.

I told Masaya what had happened while paying close attention to our surroundings in the classroom corner.

When Masaya finished listening to everything, he looked at Tojo-san, who was eating her lunch surrounded by the girls, and me, who was holding the lunch she had made.

“Fuーn… Well. It’s good, isn’t it?”

“What is..?”

“I’m saying that it’s okay to have this level of happiness. If not… your life won’t be worth it.”

When Masaya said this, I felt like a small weight in my heart was lifted.

I think there was a part of me that wondered if it was fine for someone like me to be in such a blessed environment.

“I feel so jealous! Don’t you get to eat food that our school’s idol cooks and spend time with her every day? The other guys will kill you if they find out about it. I don’t mind because I have a girlfriend.”

“Even I understand that much… Speaking of which, have you been able to meet up with Azeyama-san too?”

“Hmm? Well, it’s tough right now. My high school is far away due to family reasons, but I heard that she was planning to apply for college here, so I guess I’ll just have to be patient until then.”

Azeyama-san is the name of the girl Masaya has been dating since middle school.

Masaya’s expression is always kind when he talks about his precious girlfriend.

His short, close-cropped hair is masculine, and in addition to having a good face, he is also the ace of the basketball team. Naturally, a number of girls have approached him, but Masaya never turns his head towards them.

The only time he softens his expression is in front of Azeyama-san.

—He changes his expression rather quickly, even in front of me, but I don’t want to point it out because it’s a bit embarrassing.

“So, let me see what kind of bento is made by the girl that everyone adores.”

I felt a slight reluctance to show Masaya as he grinned at me, but I had to eat it in front of him anyway.

I opened the lunch box with a sigh, and Masaya let out a voice of admiration.

“Ooh… It’s as awesome as I expected.”

“I think so too.”

Today, as always, her bento was excellent.

There were the egg rolls that I told her I liked, the asparagus wrapped in pork, and the chikuzenni. Then there was broccoli and small tomatoes for a change in colour and vegetable factor.

Lastly, the rice was topped with a sprinkling of bonito, and it looked appetizing from the colour alone.

“While there’s nothing special about this dish… I like that it’s this way.”

“I know what you mean.”

It may sound weird, but Tojo-san’s lunches are moderately popular.

It’s not that she uses expensive ingredients because she has the money, but that she raises the overall quality by sparing no effort when using reasonable ones―I’m not an expert. I just feel that way.

After saying ‘Itadakimasu,’ I started with the tamagoyaki like yesterday.

I couldn’t resist the gentle sweetness of this dish.

It went well with the asparagus wrapped around the meat, and I couldn’t not just eat them together.

“I’m so glad… that there are women out there who find my friend attractive.”

“What’s with the weird way you say that?”

“Sorry, my bad. But I’ve been thinking for a long time that you, the kindest and most thoughtful person I know, can’t enjoy your youth because you don’t have time for it.”

I wanted to say that it was none of his business, but I certainly couldn’t say that I was living the life of a student.

I think Masaya was in a situation where he couldn’t help but be concerned.

I even felt bad about that.

“Anyway, isn’t that good? Now you don’t have to force yourself to work part-time. Let’s try something you couldn’t do before.”

“Something I couldn’t do before… What would that be?”

“Well, you could hang out with me.”

“I mean, that’s something I’ve never done before.”

“Oi oi, come on. You gotta be happier! I don’t know how many times I’ve asked you out, and you couldn’t come! You’re going to have so much fun now, won’t you!?”

I feel bad for refusing his invitation for a long time, and I should be happy that I can have some fun with Masaya after school from now on, but I’m not quite in the mood.

It was after school when Tojo-san did her work, so I couldn’t just play around during that time.

“But I’m not going to quit all my part-time jobs. I still have a part-time job at a convenience store today, and I have other plans for tomorrow.”

“How about Monday then, the first day of next week? Let’s go to a karaoke bar or something. I know a cheap place with free tickets― Uoh⁉”

“Hm?”

Suddenly startled, Masaya turned his head and pointed behind me.

I turned around and saw Tojo-san standing there smiling at me.

I don’t know what it was, but I felt strangely intimidated, even though I’m sure she was smiling.

“Haruyuki-kun, you were sick yesterday, but you look fine today.”

“Oh, yeah, fortunately…”

“I’m relieved. If you have any questions about yesterday’s class, you can always count on me, okay?”

“…Thank you.”

I watched her go back to her seat and broke out in a slight cold sweat.

I wondered where she had heard us from.

I think she might have felt more or less uncomfortable when she heard the part about me going to hang out.

I started to think that I should apologize to her later until I received a message on my phone.

The person messaging me was Tojo-san, who had just left us.

|| “It’s perfectly fine for you to go out with your friends, but I’d appreciate it if you could be back by 20:00. Also, please don’t eat dinner out if possible, okay?

I gave Tojo-san a sideways glance, and she gave me a soft smile back.

I couldn’t help but pat my chest in relief.

Surprisingly, she didn’t seem to have a problem with me going out to play.

I wasn’t going to break this part of the agreement either, as I didn’t want to miss out on Tojo-san’s dinner.

“Was she… angry?”

“N-No, she said it wouldn’t be a problem as long as I was home by 8. Also, we agreed that we would have dinner at home and not eat out.”

“Well, that’s fair. I’m not going to drag you around for so long.”

I haven’t told Masaya everything about my relationship with Tojo-san because I’m too embarrassed to do so, but he’s right. What she sent me in text messages was quite reasonable.

Yesterday, Tojo-san was working from home, but I heard that she sometimes works outside the house, and it’s part of my role to say ‘welcome home’ when she does.

When I think about it again, it’s strange that I even feel proud of myself.
