Oliver and Marilyn opened the door of the apartment. When they stepped in, May was on the couch. Shit, I forgot about what happened this morning. He thought things were gonna be awkward, but May ran up to him, her eyes dancing, as if she didn’t remember a thing.
“O-Oliver! You’re here! I’m so glad, I—”
“Uh…why?” he asked.
“Because!” she said, running back to the couch and bringing him an opened cardboard box. “These are here!!”
He looked at it. “What is it?” he asked.
She giggled excitedly. “I-I’ve been reading your books!” she said. “A-and I had to stop, because you didn’t have the 6th book, but—”
“Oh yeah, last week I saw I didn’t have the complete set. I ordered books 6, 7, and 8.”
“I know!!” she smiled.
Oliver felt like he was forgetting something. “Oh yeah,” he said, pulling out two wrapped cheeseburgers. “Here. Um, sorry, I forgot I didn’t have any food here, so I went to get something for you.”
May was so busy reading, she hardly realized how hungry she was. She took them an unwrapped one, taking a bite. “Mmmm…yummy!” she said.
Marilyn looked at it lustfully. “May, can I have a bite??”
“N-no!”
“Marilyn,” Oliver said, “you already had one!”
“Yeah, but I only had one!” she whined. “She has two!! That’s not fair!”
“She hasn’t eaten anything all day!”
Marilyn looked to May again. “Come on, May—just one bite!!”
“No!!” she said, pulling it back.
“Marilyn, you had ice cream too! That’s enough food!”
“I have room for one more cheeseburger!” she said.
May hurried to finish what she had left of her second cheeseburger.
“Wh-what…..no….” Marilyn’s eyes lingered. “I didn’t get a bite!!”
Oliver rolled his eyes. “Ugghhh, fine Marilyn! Here!” He pulled a cheeseburger out of his hood pocket. “I bought one for myself, but I’m not even that hungry after that ice cream.”
She looked at it, eyes sparkling. She grabbed it gleefully, yelling, “Thank you, Oliver!!!!” She unwrapped it and took a bite. “Yummy!!!” She hugged him. “Thanks!!”
May watched, feeling her heartbeat quicken. She furrowed her eyebrows and frowned.
Marilyn eventually let go, then turned around and noticed May in Oliver’s clothes. “Oh,” she said. She started to take off May’s dress and bow.
“MARILYN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”
She handed May the clothes. “Here you go!” she said. “I don’t know how you can wear that. Everyone was staring at me all day. That never really happened before…not like today. I…” she whispered it loudly, “a guy even asked me out today!!”
“WHAT?!” Oliver yelled. Then it clicked. “So THAT’S what David was doing!”
“Yeah,” Marilyn scoffed. “But I told him no, of course. I mean, I don’t like him.”
Oliver couldn’t believe it. “Marilyn, it’s David—everyone wants to date David right now. Girls are going crazy for him, even Naomi has a thing for him!!”
Marilyn looked at him. “Oliver, demons never fall in love. Especially not with humans.”
“Oh…”
Silence.
Marilyn handed May her clothes again. “So here. Now I want my clothes.” May took them reluctantly.
“If you want your clothes, just open a portal to your house,” Oliver said.
“No! If I do that, I’ll be wasting a portal!”
“Just do it, Marilyn! Just this one time!”
“No!! What if a demon comes and starts attacking people, and we need to get over there!!!”
“Demons haven’t attacked once, Marilyn! Come on, just for today!!”
“It can still happen!!!”
May watched Oliver and Marilyn argue in front of her. She wanted to say something, but didn’t know how to interject.
“Um, g-guys?”
They stopped yelling and looked at her.
“M-maybe I can help?”
“How?!” Marilyn asked.
She hesitated as they both stared at her. “I, um…I-I can open p-portals too…”
“Wait, really May??” Oliver smiled.
“Y-yes.” She smiled too.
Marilyn rolled her eyes. “She’s lying, Oliver—don’t be stupid!”
“I’m not!”
“Sure you’re not, angel!”
She gave Marilyn a dirty look. “Where do you live?”
“My house,” Marilyn said. “It's 10 minutes away, next to a liquor store.
“Is it big and white?” she asked.
“Yup.”
May concentrated, taking a deep breath. Oliver wasn’t sure exactly what she did—all he saw was the portal door materialize in the living room. May opened the door, and they all looked in to see Marilyn’s room.
“Woah,” Oliver said, impressed.
May blushed and hid a smile.
“Oliver, get me my clothes,” Marilyn said.
“Fine. Hold the door for me.”
She did. Oliver walked in and looked around. He opened the closet and grabbed Marilyn’s extra sweater and skirt.
“Oliver!!” she yelled.
“What?”
“Bring my kitty socks too, okay??”
He mumbled to himself. “Fine!” He opened Marilyn’s dresser and fumbled around, picking up a pair of socks with cat faces on them. “These?” he asked.
“Yes!!!”
He grabbed all the clothes and walked back through the door. As soon as it closed behind it, it dissipated into nothing. Marilyn ran up and hugged him.
“Thank you, Oliver!!!!”
“MARILYN, YOU’RE STILL NAKED!!!”
“But I've gotta show you my appreciation!!”
“Yeah, well you can do that by putting your clothes on,” he said. She pulled back and started to get dressed.
“Okay, so…what are we gonna do for dinner tonight?” Oliver asked.
Marilyn pulled the sweater over her head, then started pulling on her socks. “”Oh! I’m feeling pizza tonight!” she said.
“That’s not a bad idea,” Oliver said, nodding. He looked to May. “What do you want, May?”
“O-oh, umm….what about…f-fried rice with fish?”
“Huh. Well, uh, I don’t think I know any restaurants that sell that,” he said.
“Oh, well I, um…I can make it…”
“Wait, you can cook?!”
She blushed. “Y-yeah. My m-mom would t-teach me when I was a little girl.”
“That’s great!” he said. “But, uh, I don’t have any food here. I can’t cook, so I never bothered buying any.”
“Oh, I know!” Marilyn said. “How about we go to the mall!!! There’s a market there that sells those kinds of foods, I think! Plus, I need to get a new phone, anyway—I think I lost mine…”
“Shit, I forgot!” Oliver said, opening his backpack. He pulled out Marilyn’s phone. “You dropped it at school this morning, so I grabbed it for you. I guess I forgot to give it back.”
She gasped. “Yayyy!!! Thank you!!!” She turned it on happily. “Well, I still think we should go. I might see a cute puppy there!”
“Marilyn, none of the stores there sell pets,” Oliver said.
“Yes they do.”
“No, they don’t!”
“Um, what’s a mall?” May asked.
He looked at her. “It’s a big building with a lot of little stores inside.”
“Yeah, let’s get going so I can prove you wrong!” Marilyn said.
“I think we should let May get changed, first,” he said.
“Oh! U-um, right…” May looked at the dress and frowned. “Hey, i-it’s dirty!” she said.
Oliver walked over to see. Sure enough, as May held up the dress, it was covered in ice cream and ketchup stains. He shot her a look.
“What?” she countered.
“Ugh, nothing!” He looked at May, “I’m sorry.”
“N-no, it’s o-okay! I, um, I c-can just w-wash it!”
“Yeah,” he said, “but we have to go before the mall closes.”
“O-oh…”
The two of them thought about what she could do. Oliver looked around, and caught a glance of his own reflection in the mirror. “Oh!” he said. “I know! You can wear my hoodie. Just until we clean your dress.”
She blushed. “Oh, u-um…okay.
Oliver pulled off his hoodie and handed it to her. She took it, and pulled it over her head.
“C’mon, hurry May!”
The three of them left the apartment, Oliver locking the door behind them. The sky was rubbed in shades of orange and purple, and a chill was starting to set in. They walked to the sidewalk and started to walk to the mall. Their footsteps echoed off the empty sidewalk as they walked away from the building.
May was glad for the hoodie—it was big and warm, and smelled like Oliver. She smiled contentedly.
Eventually they got there, and May was amazed. They didn’t have anything like this where she was from. It was big and beautiful.
“OLIVER, LOOK OVER THERE!” Marilyn yelled, pointing.

“What??”
She ran over and picked up a toy dog. “See?? It’s a doggy!!!”
“That’s a toy, Marilyn!”
“No it's not, IT’S A DOGGY!!!”
“Uggghhh, Marilyn, just put it back!” he yelled.
“No!”
“WHY NOT?!?”
“Because I’m buying it!” she said.
“Oh.”
She bought it, and he grabbed her hand. “Okay, let’s just go,” he said, pulling her out of the store. They were in the center of the mall, surrounded by shoppers. May was a little overwhelmed. “Okay, where are we going first?”
“Um, the groceries?” May suggested.
“Hm…” he thought about it.
“Oh, I think we should walk around the mall for a bit first, just so we don’t have to carry all those bags around all the whole time.”
“Good idea, Marilyn!” Oliver said. “Let’s walk around for a while.”
May Looked at Marilyn, who looked back. Marilyn stuck out her tongue and started to walk. May gasped. She knew something was up! She hurried to catch up to the two of them.
Oliver and Marilyn went in and out of stores. By the end, he had one bag and she had 3. May just followed and watched relatively silently. Oliver noticed she hadn’t gotten anything the whole time.
“Hey, do you want some new clothes, May?”
“Um…I would, but…I-I don’t have any m-money,” she said, looking down at her feet.
“Oh!” Oliver pulled out his wallet, grabbing 3 bills. “Here,” he said, handing them to her.”
She looked. It was $300. She looked up at him wide-eyed. “W-what?! Oliver, th-that’s a lot of money!! I c-can’t take that!!”
“Sure you can,” he said. “You just don’t want to. But I don’t want you to feel left out, so take it, and go and buy something nice!”
She looked up at him. He was smiling at her. She blushed. “Y-you sure?”
“Yeah, I’m sure.”
She timidly took the money from his hand, grazing his fingertips. “Th-thank you,” she said.
He smiled, then turned to Marilyn. “Hey Marilyn!” he said.
“Yeah?”
He pointed to one of the shops. “Can you take May to that store?”
She followed his finger, then shot back at him. “What?? No!”
“Why not?!”
“Cuz, it’s too girly!”
“But you’re a girl!!”
“Yeah, but I’m not into that!!”
“I know, but I just want you to go in there with her and take care of her—she’s never shopped at a mall before.”
Oliver pleaded with her with his eyes. She blushed and caved. “Ugh, fine! May, let’s go!”
“H-huh? Wh-where??” she said. She had zoned out.
“Marilyn is gonna take you shopping over there,” Oliver explained.
“What?? C-can’t you come with us?” she said, glancing back at Marilyn.
“It’s gonna look weird if I go in there, so yeah…Plus, I wanted to buy something else, so I’ll just go to a different store while I wait.” He leaned in next to May, whispering, “I told Marilyn to be nice, so if she’s ever mean to you, just let me know, ok?”
She thought about her recent exchanges with Marilyn…
“Okay,” she said.
Marilyn stood with her arms crossed, annoyed. “Come on, May! Let’s just get this over with!”
“O-okay, c-coming!” She looked back at Oliver. “B-bye, Oliver,” she smiled.
“Bye,” he said, smiling back.
30 MINUTES LATER
Oliver walked out of the video game store with his two little bags. “Let’s go!!” he said to himself. “They had it!! The Return of the Hero got such great reviews…I honestly thought it’d be sold out. I can’t wait to go home and play it.” He looked down at his other bag. “I think they’ll like these…” he said, looking at the—
“Oliver!”
He cringed. He recognized the voice immediately.
He turned around and watched as Erica walked over with someone. “Hey Oliver,” she said with a smirk, “what brings you here?”
“I’m just getting some groceries,” he said, trying to look behind him at the store Marilyn and May were in.
“Oh, all by yourself? I thought you couldn’t cook?”
“No, I’m here with Marilyn and another friend of mine,” he said.
“Oh? Well, I don’t see Marilyn or another friend,” she said, looking around.
“They’re in some girl store. I didn’t feel like going in.”
“Oh, really?” she said, hugging the guy’s arm. Oliver forgot he was there. He looked up to see who it was.
DAVID?!?!
“Oh yeah, Oliver,” she said with a wide grin, “I want you to meet my new boyfriend, David. David, this is Oliver.”
Their eyes met.
What is this guy trying to do???
“Oh, I know this dude!” David said. “He’s the one who hangs out with Marilyn now.”
Erica laughed. “He’s so weird, right??” They both started cackling at her joke, laughing their asses off as if it was the funniest thing in the world.
Oliver just stood there. Why…WHY DID HE GET WITH HER???
“Oliver!”
The laughter stopped. Oliver turned around just in time to see May grab his arm, almost romantically. “Sorry I took so long,” she said with a sheepish smile.
David and Erica stared at May. They both could tell she was dressed in Oliver’s oversized clothes.
Who the hell is this chick?? Erica thought.
May looked at Erica and David innocently. “Who are these guys, Oliver?” she asked, resting her head on his shoulder.
“U-uh…” Oliver was beyond confused. “Th-this is my ex g-girlfriend, and her new boyfriend.”
“Oh? Really?” May said, looking at them both.
“Well, who are you?” Erica said, plastering a smile on her face.
“Oh, this is Oliver’s girlfriend,” Marilyn said, walking up to them.
“Wh-what?! I am???”
Marilyn shushed Oliver.
“Come on, Oliver, we should get going,” May said.
“Uh….y-yeah? See you guys?” he said to Erica and David. They turned to walk away.
Why is she so pretty?? Erica thought.
Damn, Oliver is lucky, David thought.
Oliver, still walking, looked to Marilyn and May. “Why?” he asked.
Marilyn giggled evilly. “Because, me and May saw you with Erica, and you looked like shit. So we came up with a plan where May would pretend she’s your girlfriend so we could make Erica jealous! No need to thank me.”
He didn’t know what to think about it. “Whatever…let’s just go get the groceries now.” He tried to pull his arm away, but May was still latched on. “Uh, May? Can you please let go of my arm?”
“No! She can’t let go!” Marilyn whispered.
“Why not?!”
“Because! Erica’s still looking at us!!”
“Oh, she is?” Oliver looked at May. “May, could you let go of my arm please,” he smiled.
“Um, yeah…”
She let go awkwardly. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, holding her close to him. Her entire body caught on fire, and she almost hyperventilated right there. But she had to do this for Oliver. So, she wrapped her arm around his waist, and off they walked.
Shit, what the hell??! Oliver thought
Erica turned a lovely shade of pink. That bitch!! What the hell does she think she’s doing with him?!?
Marilyn looked back discreetly. “She’s mad!!” she laughed. Oliver smiled, and they walked to the grocery store.
A few hours later, Marilyn and Oliver were seated at the table. May just told them dinner was ready.
She walked out with two plates, setting one in front of both of them.
Oliver looked down. “Woah,” he said. “This looks great!! And it smells delicious,” he said, sniffing the air. He got his spoon and scooped up some of the rice, taking a bite. May stood, nervously watching.
“H-how is it?” she asked.
“It’s great!”
“R-really?”
“Yeah!” he said, taking another bite.
Marilyn chewed her food deliberately. “Ehh, it’s okay.”
“Okay??” he said. “What do you mean ‘okay’??”
She shrugged. “It’s okay, but a cheeseburger is way better.”
“Shut up,” he said, “this is homemade food. It’s been a long time since I’ve had homemade food. I’ve just been eating fast food—and so have you!”
“Well, cheeseburgers are still better!” she yelled.
“No, homemade food is!” he yelled back.
And they yelled back and forth about it for the rest of the night.
