Oliver walked up to his apartment with Marilyn and May, stopping when he saw Maxine sitting at the door.

“SH-SHIT!” he yelled. “I forgot you were here!!”

She rolled her eyes. “I knew that was gonna happen, so I just walked here myself.” She stood up and Oliver unlocked the door, letting the four of them in.

“Ah, shit,” Oliver said, falling back onto his couch. May stood near him awkwardly.

“U-um, wh-what do you want to eat, Oliver?” she asked.

Oliver thought about it for a second.

Outside the window, someone watched the four of them from a distance. “M-May…?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Oliver said, “maybe I’ll buy something. Maybe a cheeseburger.” He flashed a look at Marilyn. She smiled.

“Yes! I want that one!!!”

“Ou, ou, I want that too!!” Maxine chimed.

“I-I can go for one, too!”

“Alright,” Oliver said, “then let’s go eat that.”

The three girls cheered:

“Yes!!”

“Okay…”

“FUCK YEAHHH!!!!”

Oliver laughed, and they got up to go.

They walked down the sidewalk together. Maxine caught up to Oliver and held his hand. He looked down at her.

“Why’re you holding my hand?”

She shrugged. “Just because.”

Marilyn looked between the two of them, watching the interaction unfold. She took Oliver’s other hand. Maxine immediately reacted.

“HEY! NO, YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!” she screamed.

“Yes I can,” she said. “Look—I’m doing it right now!”

“I DON’T MEAN LIKE THAT!!” she yelled. “I DON’T WANT YOU HOLDING HIS HAND!!!”

“Well too bad!” Marilyn countered, sticking out her tongue.

“Oliver, tell her to stop!” Maxine yelled.

“Both of you stop—that way, it’ll be fair,” he said.

“THAT’S NOT FAIR, I’M ACTUALLY YOUR LITTLE SISTER!!”

“U-um, c-can I hold your hand t-too, Oliver?” May asked.

“NOOOO!” Maxine yelled. She knew she wasn’t gonna get anywhere with this. “Let’s just go eat!” she yelled, dropping her brother’s hand. She couldn’t believe how jealous the two of them were. She stormed past them and led the way. Marilyn let go as well.

May looked at Oliver’s hand, torn. She wanted to grab it—show some kind of forwardness—but couldn’t bring herself to. They got to hold his hand, and I don’t!?? No, th-that’s not fair! She reached her hand forward and grabbed his, walking next to him.

Oliver looked over. She was staring at the floor, hair covering her eyes so he couldn’t see her embarrassment. A blush crept across his face.

Maxine turned around. “Nope,” she said with a scowl, “not happening.” She pulled Oliver away, disconnecting their hands. But it didn’t matter to May—she was proud of herself for doing it to begin with.

Maxine wasn’t as pleased, though. “Dummy!” she yelled. She turned to Oliver. “I think Mom’s wrong—I don’t want her to be your wife!!”

“Maxine—!!”

“She’s too shy!!! How am I ever gonna be an aunt if she’s too shy to do that!?!??”

“Shut up, Maxine!” he yelled, hiding his blush. “I never said I was gonna marry her!”

“You want to, though!” she accused. “But I think Marilyn is better for you!”

Marilyn and May stood motionlessly through the conversation, showing no sudden change in emotion.

Maxine continued. “She’s really cute, and definitely into you, so stop being stupid, Oliver!! Plus, Marilyn looks like she really wants you to be her first boyfriend! She said she’s never had a boyfriend until she met you—how are you not taking the hint!???”

“There is no hint, Maxine!” Oliver hissed. “You just read into things that aren’t there.

“Oliver, take a hint!!!”

“Nah,” he scoffed, “I’m good.”

She was steaming. “Dummy!!” she yelled, balling her fists. Ooooh, he’s such a dumbass, she thought, but don’t worry, Oliver—your little sister’s got this.

They walked into the restaurant and walked up to the counter.

The woman at the register kept her brown eyes focused on something on the counter. “Good afternoon, sir, how may I help you?” she asked, a strand of brown hair falling over her shoulder.

Huh…why do I feel like I recognize this girl? Oliver asked himself. Her nametag read ALEXA.

She glanced up. Oh, she thought, it’s that guy I bumped into the other day. She studied him, trying to make sure if it was the same guy who helped her up.

“Um, well,” Oliver started, “I’ll take a chee…”

Should I thank him? He has to know it’s me, right? I mean, I didn’t really get the chance to thank him the other night, so it’d only be common courtes—

“Did…you get that?” Oliver asked. She shook herself out of her thoughts.

“Uh, n-no, sorry. Could you repeat that, please?”

He exhaled. “Okay then. I said, I’ll take a…”

I don’t know what to do…I don’t want to seem like a jerk—like, he was nice to me, and I wanna be nice back, but will it be weird? Does he even remember?

“Hello? Did you hear me?”

She focused again. “O-oh, I’m so sorry,” she said awkwardly.

Oliver took a napkin and a pen, scribbling something out. “Here,” he said, handing it to her. “There’s the order. And here’s $40—keep the change.”

She looked at the money. “Oh. Th—” But when she looked up, he was already gone, walking away to a table. “Oh no,” she said, “not again. I’m saying thank you this time.”

Oliver joined the girls at a table.

“Hey Oliver!” Maxine said, “Did you buy me an ice cream??”

Marilyn looked over. “Wait, there’s ice cream?”

“No,” Oliver said to Maxine, “I’ll order it after you eat.”

“Uggghhh, fine,” she said.

10 minutes passed. Alexa looked down at the order. Okay, she said to herself, it’s time. I’m gonna thank him.

“O-Oliver! You’re order is ready!” she called.

At the table, Oliver got up. “Can someone help me bring it to the table?”

“I-I’ll go!” May said, standing up.

“Thanks!” The two of them walked over.

Oliver picked up one tray, and May picked up the other. While they were there, Alexa spun around to the ice cream machine. This was her chance. She started to make an ice cream cone. Once it was done, she spun back around.

“Here you are sir, I jus—” But he was gone already. “Why does this happen every time I try to return the favor?!” She thought about just letting it go. “No, I have to give this to him!”

She walked around the counter into the seating area, and started to walk towards Oliver’s table. Then froze in her tracks.

Wait…is this hitting on him?? she blushed. No, no it’s not. I mean, I’m just trying to be nice. But…what if he doesn’t think that. What if he thinks I’m trying to flirt with him or something… She stood in the center of the seating area, torn. S-should I even do this…? She sighed. Shit…

“Hey lady, are you gonna eat that?”

Alexa looked up at Marilyn. She was looking at the ice cream cone that was melting in her hand. “Huh? O-oh, no.”

“Can I have it, then?”

“Um…” she thought about it. Then sighed, defeated. “Sure. Why not,” she said, handing it to her.

“Thanks!” she smiled. Alexa watched as she ran off to Oliver’s table.

“Sh-she’s friends with him!!” She snapped her fingers. “Dammit! I was so close!!”

“Hey, where did you get that?” Oliver asked suspiciously.

“The girl at the counter gave it to me,” Marilyn said, licking her ice cream.

“Did you pay for it?”

“Ummm…no…”

“Marilyn!” he yelled. “Shit.” Oliver got up and made his way to the counter. Alexa straightened up as he got closer. She opened her mouth to say something, but Oliver quickly asked “How much is an ice cream cone?”

“Um, $1.45.”

Oliver pulled out a $5 bill. “Here. Keep the change.” He turned and walked away.

NO, I CAN’T JUST LET HIM WALK AWAY AGAIN!!

“Th-thank you, sir!” she called. He continued to walk, unphased. “He didn’t hear me…” She slumped over. “Wait, his ice cream!” she yelled. She ran over to the machine, muttering to herself. “Shit, shit, shit!” Once she made a cone, she ran over to Oliver’s table, almost tripping over her feet.

Everyone looked up at her as she panted, holding out an ice cream cone to Oliver.

“H-huh-here’s your i-huh-ice cream, sir!”

He stared at it. “What? No, I was just paying off the one you gave her.”

“O-oh…no, that one was free. You paid for this one, s-so here.”

“Ou ou! I want it!” Marilyn chimed.

“What!?” Maxine cried. “You already had one!! Let me have this one, Oliver!!!”

“Fine,” Oliver said. He took the cone and gave it to Maxine.

Alexa was ready. She was going to say thank you now. She opened her mouth to say it, but froze. Normally, she would’ve been fine, but now she stood here, embarrassed in front of three other girls. The words caught in her throat.

“D-do you need something?” May asked.

“U-um, n-n-no,” she muttered, hurrying away. Ugh, I’m so stupid! Why is it so hard for me to just say thank you!?? But she was determined. She wasn’t gonna let this get past her. What if she never saw him again?? What were the odds they would meet for a third time??

She waited a half hour for them to finish. Alexa planned on catching Oliver as he left and thanking him. The four of them got up from their table, threw away their trash, and made their way to the door.

It was go time.

She jumped over the counter, running after them. Oliver had already walked out the door. I’m gonna say it, I’m gonna say it, I’m gonna say it! She threw open the door and ran a few steps into the parking lot. They were already almost off the lot. She had to act NOW.

“HEYYYYYYYY!!!!!”

Oliver turned around and looked in her direction.

He heard me!! No time for hesitation now. “TH-THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!” she yelled.

His eyes widened. “YOOO!!!” he yelled.

Alexa felt completed. She did it. She—

“THAT’S SO FUCKING COOL!!!” His eyes trailed past Alexa. She cocked her head and turned around to see what he was looking at.

On the pavement behind her, a pug on a skateboard rolled by. The four of them were watching it in awe before turning to leave.

As she realized what just happened, Alexa slumped over. “It’s like this world doesn’t want me to be nice,” she said, shuffling back inside.

By the time the four of them got to the apartment complex, Marilyn looked over her shoulder.

“O-Oliver…” she whispered.

“What?” he whispered back.

“S-someone’s watching us…I can feel it. I felt it earlier, too. I…I think someone’s spying on us…”

“Shit!”

Almost in response, they heard a male voice quietly exclaim. Oliver and Marilyn stood on guard.

“That sounded like it came from above us,” Oliver said, looking up into the trees.

“SHIT!” the voice repeated. They’ve spotted me. No point of hiding anymore, he thought. The four of them watched as a black haired man, dressed in a white suit and green tie, jumped down from he trees.

“OK,” he yelled, “FIGHT POSITION: HUNTING TIGER!!!”

“FUCK!!” Marilyn screamed, jumping back. “FIGHT POSITION: DEFENSIVE TIGER!!!”

The two of them circled for a moment. Marilyn lunged forward with the first punch.

“What the hell is going on!???” Maxine asked, looking between Oliver and the fight. May, meanwhile, reached towards the man.

“D-Dad…!!” she said.

“You fucking demon!!” the man said to Marilyn. “I’LL KILL YOU!!!”

He threw a punch aimed for Marilyn’s face, but it was caught. He looked as May held his fist, stopping him from hitting Marilyn.

“M-May…” he said to his daughter. “I…what the hell are you doing with these animals?!??” He looked up at all of them, until he saw Oliver. “HIM!!” he flared. “THAT FUCKING DEMON YOU LO—”

She kicked him in the ankle.

“A-ah, May!! What the hel—”

“Come with me, Dad,” she said, pulling him to the side.

Oliver watched the whole ordeal with a look of glazed shock. “Th-that’s…May’s dad?” He looked at Marilyn. “Break position,” he said. “Let them talk.”

She did as he said. “Yes, sir!”

May and her dad stopped at a bench underneath a large, shady oak tree.

“May,” he said, “why the hell are you with this demon?!?”

For the first time in over a month, she looked into her Dad’s green eyes. It felt like it had been so much longer. “Dad, y-you don’t understand. He’s so nice!!”

He shook his head. “This is bad, May. I thought I taught you better than this.” He got closer to his daughter’s face. “Didn’t you here? Those demons? They killed Marco. Who knows what they’re going to try to do to you!”

May gasped. She didn’t know about Marco…she thought Oliver said he was just going to prison…

Her dad took her hand. “May, come back with me. You’ll be safe.”

“N-no!” she sputtered. “O-Oliver wouldn’t let anything happen to me!! Besides, I love living with him, Dad. For the first time in so long, I’m…I’m actually happy.”

He looked at her and sighed. “May, I can’t force you to do anything, and I won’t try to. I’m just worried. I don’t know what they’re going to do to you.”

She had to give her Dad a break. She knew that he was genuinely concerned for her safety…he was just wrong about them. “Dad, I-I’ve been living here for over a month already, and I’m fine. I’m great, even. The only thing I’ve done is housework, a-and Oliver doesn’t even make me do that! I do it on my own, to say thanks.”

She sighed. “I love living with him. It’s like…it’s like I found where I belong, Dad. My whole life, I felt like I was different. I didn’t fit in anywhere. I felt like I wasn’t even living my own life. But here…I’m happy. I’m finally happy. I…I can’t imagine ever leaving, Dad. I can’t go back.”

He watched as tears collected in her eyes. Looking from Oliver to her, he smiled sadly. “Come here,” he said, pulling her into a hug. Despite everything, she didn’t realize how much she missed hugging her dad.

“Me and your Mom miss you, but we understand,” he said, petting her hair. “You really love that demon, don’t you?” He felt her sniffle into his chest.

“As much as I hate them,” he said, looking at Oliver, “all I want is my little angel to be happy.”

“Thanks, Dad…” she said, letting his shirt catch her tears.

He held her for a little while longer before looking up at Oliver. He patted her on the back, let go of her with a smile, and walked over to him.

Oliver watched nervously as the strapping angel marched towards him. His mind raced trying to determine what he should do. The man towered over him.

“Um…h-hello,” Oliver said.

He glared at him with a look of pure stone. Then held out his hand. “Milo Warmight,” he said.

Oliver took his hand. “Oliver Rojas,” he said, shaking it.

They stared into each other’s eyes as they shook hands. “Hey, demon,” Milo said.

“...y-yeah?”

He bent down to Oliver’s ear, whispering, “If you ever do anything to hurt her, I’ll slaughter you, and hang your head on my mantle. Understand?

Oliver attempted to say something, but tripped over his own tongue. All he could manage was a hoarse, “Y-yeah.”

Milo let go of his hand. “Good. Take care of her, for me.” Oliver watched silently as he walked over to May, gave her one more hug, and walked away.

Everyone gathered back around Oliver.

“So,” Oliver said, clearing his throat nervously, “th-that’s your dad, huh?”

“Um, y-yeah.”

“He looks just as ugly as you,” Marilyn said.

“HEY!!!!”

“Why was he hiding in a tree and spying on us?” Maxine asked, looking around with a tinge of annoyance.

“Um…I dont know,” May answered honestly.

Maxine crossed her arms. “What a weird day. First that pug, and now this.”

Oliver just turned around. “Let’s go inside.”
