"Oliver! Oliver, get up! Hey, Oliver!!!" Marilyn shook him violently. "WAAAAKKE UUUUPPP!!!!!"
Oliver's eyes began to open as he was jolted back and forth, and he started coughing.
"What–what happened??" He asked, delusional.
Marilyn slightly kicked him in the gut. You've been asleep for hours, it's already past midnight!"
"Shit, seriously?!" From the tone in her voice, Oliver sat up and looked around alertly. He couldn't see any danger right away, but saw Marilyn’s desperate look in her eyes. "What happened? What's wrong?! Did something happen while I was asleep?!"
"Yes."
"Shit," he said, standing up as quickly as his aching body could muster. "What?"
"My tummy hurts; I'm hungry," she said, holding her stomach.
He gaped at her. "You woke me up because of that?!?" He sat down again.
"No, come on, Oliver!" She said, pulling his hoodie. "Let's go get some food!"
Oliver breathed heavily, thinking over the events that took place before he passed out. Looking down at himself, he assumed Marilyn cleaned him up; all the blood and sweat was gone.
In all honesty… he was famished. He got up, ready to go get something to eat.
"Yay!!" Marilyn clapped.
Oliver looked over at Xbot, disheveled against the far wall. "Are… we just gonna leave him?" Oliver asked.
"Well," she said smartly, "we can't exactly take him to eat, considering he doesn't have a mouth."
He looked at her narrowly. "Ha-ha. Real funny."
She grabbed his hoodie sleeve. "Come on!" She said, pulling, "let's go eat!!" They made their way outside, opening the doors to the red of the underworld.
The door shut as they left, echoing slightly in the white room. All was still and quiet…
A loud, quick VWHIR echoed through the room. Followed by two more.
Against the wall, Xbot's face lit up, blood red yet still smiling. It whirred as it got up slowly, straightening itself out. It surveyed the room, scanning until… it spotted the door. He made his way over, buzzing mechanically with each step. He reached for the knob and turned it, faced with the city in front of him. Out he walked onto the street.
Oliver looked around the buildings and warm red sky aimlessly as Marilyn led the way. "So, Marilyn, what are we eating?"
"Yep! Cheeseburgers!!"
"Cheesebur—we've had that for 3 days in a row, already! Let's eat something else."
"NO! I want cheesburgers!!!" She yelled, stomping her foot and crossing her arms.
"Come on, I want to eat something else, Marilyn!" He was damn tired of cheeseburgers at this point.
"Too bad, Oliver. You're the sidekick, and I'm the captain, which means we eat what I say we eat."
He scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Fine; then you can pay for it. I'm getting sick and tired of being the only one who pays for anything. Especially when I'm paying for food I don't even want to eat!"
"What??" She whined. "But I left my money at home!"
"Marilyn!! Again? That's been your excuse every day!"
"I'm telling the truth!" She said, pulling his sleeve. "If you don't pay for my food, I'll starve!!"
He exploded. "BUT YOU DON'T EVEN PAY ME BACK!" Onlookers turned their heads as they walked.
She cowered, looking up at him guiltily. "Well… I've just, been… forgetting," she murmured silently.
"You've been wasting all my money, Marilyn!!! How am I supposed to pay the rent?!"
"I'll pay you back, Oliver—I swear! But please, please, please!!! You've gotta do this for me! I just want a cheeseburger!!"
"But I don't! He screamed, exasperated.
She got extremely sad, frantically thinking. "Oh, wait!" She said as her face lit up. "I have an idea! How about you get me a cheeseburger, and you can get yourself something else?"
Oliver stopped in his tracks. "Oh yeah… that'll work," he said, wondering why he hadn't thought of it before.
"YAY!!!!" They continued to walk, Marilyn leading Oliver back to the hospital so they could eat in the normal world. As they traveled down the streets and sidewalks, Oliver kept his eyes up, studying everything. He still couldn't believe any of this was real… but here it was.
ELSEWHERE
Xbot moved down an empty sidewalk, red smile blaring into the mid-burgandy darkness. It's screen moved slightly from side to side, scanning the area. Eventually, he stumbled upon a busier street with a handful of demons walking about.
He made his way over.
A young looking demon, sharp and in his prime, was among them. He had short, dark hair that was quiffed to the side, and a robust build. As Xbot marched over slowly, he turned to face him, looking it up and down with a smile.
"Oh, hey man," he said with a smile, "What type of demon are you? You look freaking sick!" The other demons around walked past, not noticing. Xbot didn't answer. He just smiled.
He took that as a sign of friendliness. "Well, nice to meet you, bro. I'm Max." He wiped his hand on his clothes courteously holding it out to Xbot (he had been working just before this).
Xbot turned his screen down slowly, looking at Max’s outstretched hand. He formed his arm in the same position, and Max took its hand and shook it. Xbot shook it back slowly.
Matt winced, looking down at his hand. "Man, why's your hand so hot? And… sharp?" He muttered.
In one quick motion, Xbot tightened his grip and tugged suddenly, ripping Max's arm completely off his shoulder with a sickening CRUNCH.
He staggered back, shocked, blood pouring out of the side of his arm and spouting like a shower head. Even with an extreme tolerance for pain that demons have, it was beyond excruciating. He could feel every ligament and tendon rip apart, his skin stretching to the point of tearing in half.
"WH–WH–WHAT THE HELL?!?" He screamed, his voice and face full of agony.
This grabbed the attention of the passersby, who turned and gaped, wondering what they were seeing.
Xbot, still smiling, took a step towards Max, who took a staggering step back. His amethyst eyes darted as his body contemplated entering into shock. He wanted to run—he knew he had to—but his legs wouldn't move.
Xbot stepped forward again, dropping Max's arm. He balled his mechanical hand into a fist, and looked Max in the face.
He stabbed his fist forward, aimed at Max's stomach, and through which it went. Blood splattered onto the sidewalk from Max's backside, and spat out of his mouth.
Xbot looked into his face as his arm rested uncomfortably inside his gut.
His eyes were terror. Shock. Sadness. Hopelessness.
They were the eyes of a man who knew he was about to live no more.
People on the sidewalk started to scream and run in terror. Chaos ensued.
Xbot pulled his fist out of Max's intestines, his arm soaked in red. Blood started to pour out of Max's mouth as he struggled to stand, gasping. He fell to his knees as blood poured out of his gut and mouth.
Xbot opened its fist, grabbed Max's head, ruining his hair, and crushed it. What used to be his head poured onto the sidewalk.
Xbot turned to the demons that were left frozen in fear, staring at what was left of Max. He faced them, and slowly marched over as they tried to run in vain.
All hell was about to break loose.
LATER
"Damn, those tacos hit the spot. I knew I needed something different."
Oliver and Marilyn walked back through the hospital doors, just finished with their meal.
Marilyn rolled her eyes. "Cheeseburgers are better than tacos, and that's a fact."
"No, they're not," Oliver said. "And if you actually think that, then I'm not surprised kids at school think you're weird."
"HEY!" She cried.
He lifted his hands quickly. "I'm just playing!" He laughed.
She pouted as Oliver laughed. "Whatever. Let's just go get Xbot."
"You should've just brought him with you. He's the size of a phone."
"Yeah, okay, but he's also as heavy as a 6 foot tall robot, Oliver!" She yelled. "I didn't want to carry him again!"
"Oh… that makes sense."
They made their way back to the room he trained in, only to find it empty.
"What the hell?" She said, looking around for Xbot. "Where did he go?!" Marilyn bit her thumbnail. Then turned to Oliver. "Oliver, what did you do to Xbot?"
"Me?!"
"Yes, you! You were the last one to touch him!"
"Oh shit," he said, starting to worry that he did something. "I‐I don't know! Nothing, I think. I just fought it!"
Marilyn started to pace quickly, still biting her thumbnail. They were both worried, but Marilyn knew what losing Xbot meant… Oliver didn't.
"Could someone have stolen it?" Oliver asked.
"Marilyn tapped her foot, looking around distractedly. "Only a small handful of demons can touch Xbot. He's made of Demon Metal, which weakens demons. Certain demons have a higher immunity to it, like me and now you, since you have my blood. But most demons don't. So… I think someone stealing it is the last of our worries."
"Demon metal?" He asked.
"Yeah… it's extremely sharp and pretty indestructible, no matter how immune you are. That's why your hands were cut so easily from punching it."
Demon metal… shit, no wonder… Oliver thought.
Meanwhile, Marilyn was starting to panic. "Well, anyways, we really need to look for Xbot… because, I kinda… erm… "borrowed him" from the Ruler of the Underworld."
"MARILYN! WHAT THE HELL??" Marilyn jumped, guilty looking. Oliver furrowed his eyebrows. "So you STOLE that from your own Ruler?! What the hell!!!"
"N‐no, not stole!! More like… took it without asking…"
He sighed angrily. "No, Marilyn. Stop making it look like you didn't do something wrong. You stole it."
Her face lit up red as she struggled to say something. "OK, fine! I did steal it! But we have to get it back before someone breaks it or something!!"
"More like before it breaks someone," Oliver said, still feeling the effects of Xbot’s beating.
"Let's just go!" Marilyn said, worry sewn throughout her voice.
They ran out the door, looking around the streets for any sight or sound of Xbot. "Where the hell would it have gone? What would a stupid robot wanna do in a city??"
"Just… just keep looking!" Marilyn said, darting into alleys and looking over walls.
Oliver grabbed her. "Marilyn, look! What's that?" They both looked over at several pillars of billowing smoke, trailing off into the blood red sky. An orange glow lit from a distance, as well as various cries and noises of distant panic. "A fire?"
"Oh, shit," she said under her breath.
She knew.
"C… C-c'mon, Oliver. We have to go get Xbot."
He followed her in the direction of the smoke until they reached a downtown square in ruins. Broken glass, fire, abandoned personal objects…
"This place is usually packed at this time…" she muttered.
"What the hell is all this? Is this normal here?" Oliver looked around at the destruction.
"Let's just go…" she said, hollowed.
They continued to walk around the empty sidewalks, hearing distant sounds but never picking up a solid direction. As they got closer to an alley, Marilyn stopped both of the in their tracks.
She smelt blood.
"Hey, do you… see that?" Oliver said, tilting his head over to the alley. Marilyn's eyes widened, and she blocked Oliver.
"Don't look over there!" She said, holding her arms out.
"What? Why?!"
"Trust me, Oliver."
The stone look of stubbornness on her face was enough to convince him not to fight her on this. "Okay. Fine. Whatever."
She motioned for him to back up, which he did, as she crept towards the alley. She already knew from the smell alone what she was gonna find there, and she wasn't wrong.
Bodies. At least 3 or 4 demons, strewn apart with pieces scattered about. Blood was everywhere, from the floor to the walls.
"Shit…"
She didn't know what she was gonna do… but she knew they had to find Xbot. Walking back to Oliver, a grim look on her face, she went behind him and covered his eyes.
He resisted. "Hey, what the hell are you doing!!"
"Stop it, Oliver! We have to go through this alley, and I don't want you to see what's there!"
They fought each other as she tried to cover his eyes.
"What's in the alley??" He yelled.
She stopped fighting, holding tightly to his eyes. "Oh, uhhh… a monster! A really, really ugly monster. He's terrifying. But… not dangerous. We can pass safely. I just… don't want you to get nightmares."
He pulled her hands off. "Marilyn, I'm not a baby. That sounds like something my parents would say when I was a little kid."
Flustered, she clamped down on his eyes again.
"Ow—!"
"Trust me, Oliver! We have to get going!!! Now start walking!" She screamed.
"Gah! Fine!!" He yelled back, scowling. He started walking, and she directed him by tilting his covered head in the direction they needed to go. They walked into the alley, both of their shoes lightly splashing in the pools of blood.
"Marilyn, seriously—why are you covering my eyes?"
"I told you already—there's a horrible monster!".
"THERE'S NO MONSTER, MARILYN! Damn. I'm not stupid, okay?" He stopped, inches away from the indiscernible remains of a splattered demon. "You're hiding something from me."

"Um, no," she said quietly, looking down at it. "It's just a monster."
He thought about it for a second, realizing that the Underworld could very likely have monsters.
"Ok… well, I'm a half-demon now—don't I need to get used to horrifying monsters? Besides, I bet it's not even that bad."
Marilyn didn't know what to say.
Oliver lifted his hands and started to peel Marilyn’s off his eyes.
"SHIT," She yelled, and without thinking headbutted Oliver as hard as she could. He instantly collapsed into her arms, out cold. She hoisted him behind her and carried him over her shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Oliver, but I'm not about to put your sanity at risk, here."
She walked past the blood soaked alley, reaching the other side where even more bodies were found.
"There's more?" She said, looking around. As she dragged Oliver street after street, the casualty count was stacking up to what could only be mass murder. Men. Women. She hoped there were no children…
She walked for almost an hour, finding nothing but blood, death, and chilling silence. After the first 30 minutes, it got old. Now she was just tired of carrying Oliver.
"When is this idiot gonna wake up," she said, throwing him over her other shoulder. "I'm getting tired of just talking to myself."
"NO—NO!!!" Marilyn heard in the distance.
She picked her head up, alert. "Oh, shit!" She yelled, running I'm the direction of the screams. The furious bobbing started to wake Oliver up.
"NO, GET AWAY FROM ME!" Marilyn ran to see a demon running out of an alley for his dear life. They nearly collided as she stopped him.
"What's wrong?" She asked, seeing the panic in his eyes.
His hair hung loosely around his face, dripping with sweat and blood. "Th-that thing!" He cried, pointing to the alleyway. "It won't stop chasing me! I-it already killed my brother!"
They both looked, the man cowering behind Marilyn, as a shadow creeper forward out of the darkness. A red glow surrounded its face. Soon enough, Marilyn knew.
"Xbot! You've been killing all these demons!!!" She cried. He was soaked in blood and tissue, the cat sticker splattered in red.
Xbot took one look at Marilyn, and in the blink of an eye nearly teleported over, slamming a fist into her shirt and sending her sailing. She flew and crashed into the wall of a building, nearly going all the way through.
Oliver fell off her back in the process, landing flat on his face with a THUD. The man ran back against the wall as Xbot examined his new targets.
Marilyn coughed, her bangs turning purple from the blood in her hair. "Shit," she said, wracked in pain.
Oliver, meanwhile, abruptly woke up to the sensation of his jaw colliding with the ground. "Ow-!" He moaned. "What the hell?"
He lifted his face up to see Marilyn, back against a broken wall, coughing and bleeding from her forehead.
"What the hell is going on??" He cried, angry in his confused state of sleepiness. Why is she hurt?? Why the hell was I asleep?! And who the HELL is gonna get the living shit beaten out of them?! The sight of Marilyn like that sent shockwaves of panic fueled anger through his body.
The sound of a mechanical whir jarred him into alertness, as his head whipped around just in time to see Xbot smash his face with it's foot.
"SHIT!" He cried, holding his nose. Blood instantly gushed out—he knew it was broken.
Furious, he looked up at Xbot's face, who was smiling down at him.
Him… "Oh, it's YOU. YOU'RE the one who did all this!" He staggered to get up. "I've… had enough… of your… SHIT!" He said, looking back at Marilyn.
He wanted to go back to help her, make sure she was okay… but he knew he had to deal with Xbot first, or he might not get the chance. Marilyn met his eyes and nodded back to Xbot.
He was the priority, and they both knew it.
He looked Xbot in the face, preparing his body to fight.
But, in half a second, Xbot punched Oliver in the chest, harder than he had hit Oliver all day.
He too went sailing, crashing into the wall near Marilyn. Every part of his back surged with pain, and the back of his head throbbed from a reason unknown to him.
"Oliver—you gotta f-fight him. He'll literally kill us!" Marilyn yelled to him.
He started to get up, the wall crumbling as he did. "Okay… I'll stop him,"
"But you can't kill him!"
He whipped around. "Can't kill him? What the hell do you mean I can't kill him?!?!"
"He's not mine—it's the ruler's! If you break him, I'll be in huge trouble!"
"As if you're not already in trouble for all this!" He yelled, not knowing the half of it.
"Please, Oliver!"
He grumbled, turning back to face Xbot. "Fine. I'll try not to."
Xbot readied himself in battle position, a drop of blood dripping from his screen.
Oliver ran forward, charging into Xbot and slamming his fist into his chest. He flew back, sailing into the alley he came from. Oliver could hear him crash into piles of garbage and litter.
"Hey, Miss—your boyfriend is really strong. You're so lucky to have him!" The man's aid, helping Marilyn on the floor.
"Yeah, well, I did trai—HEY, HE'S NOT MY BOYFRIEND!" She yelled.
Meanwhile, once again, Oliver and Xbot were going at it, tooth and nail.
Xbot came back with a series of punches to Oliver's gut and chest. If he hadn't been infused with Marilyn’s blood, it would have killed him instantly, just like Max. Regardless, though, the pain was excruciating. He wondered how many ribs he'd cracked.
He kicked Xbot, sending him stumbling backwards. As he regained his balance, Oliver charged up his smoking arm, and timed it to hit the running robot square in the screen. He grabbed its arm as he was stunned, heaved it up into the air, and jumped.
Mid-air, Oliver jumped, scissor kicking Xbot down to the floor in a cloud of dust. Marilyn cheered.
Oliver collected his breath, and Xbot began to rise. Oliver was ready to attack, but stopped. Xbot cooked its arm back, similar to Oliver, and held it.
Wait… is he—?
He released, thrusting his palm forward and sending Oliver flying, crashing into another building.
"What the HELL?!? He CHARGED HIS ARM!!!"
"Oh shit… I didn't know Xbot could learn new moves," Marilyn said quietly to herself.
Oliver held himself up by his arms, coughing blood onto the floor. Shit… this robot is smart… even smarter than he was before.
They continued to fight, back and forth for ages. Every time Oliver would think he had the upper hand, Xbot would one-up him. Over, and over, and over.
He was reaching a point where every bone in his body ached with pain, still not fully recovered from his last bout with Xbot. If Oliver didn't end this now… Xbot would.
Oliver charged his arm and his Xbot in the screen as hard as he could, cracking it.
"Oh, shit."
Xbot examined his cracked screen, pausing for a moment.
Everything was silent.
Then, the smile changed to a scowl.
"Oh, SHIT!"
Xbot charged his arm and plummeted an insane gust of energy right into Oliver's diaphragm. He flew, labeling on the floor and sliding close to Marilyn, who was still recovering.
"Oliver! Try to press the button on the back of Xbot’s neck! It should power him off!!!"
He got up slowly, cracking his neck. "Okay… I'll try."
He turned back to face Xbot, who looked even more terrifying without his smile. The two charged at each other, fists out. Oliver tried with everything he had to find the button on Xbot's neck, until he saw it.
A small blue button the size of a penny. He jolted forward and clicked in before Xbot could stop him, then moved back.
Xbot froze. His face shut off, and he returned to his normal standing position.
Oliver panted ad sweat poured down his face, over his eyes. Despite his pain, he let out a laugh. "Hey, it worked!"
Marilyn smiled and breathed a sigh of relief, glad it was finally over. "Good job, Oliver! I trained you well!!" She said with a smile.
Oliver looked back to Xbot—his lifeless, metal body—and allowed himself to breathe easy.
But then, the face flicked back, and his screen tilted up to face Oliver.
He couldn't believe it.
"What the fu—?!"
BOOM
Xbot roundhouse kicked Oliver in the jaw, sending him crashing to the floor.
As pain racked his jaw and face, furt overtook him.
"I'm so over this shit," he said to himself. "Marilyn! Look, I'm sorry, but, there's no power way. I have to kill this thing!" Like an animal, using all the strength he had left, he tackled Xbot. They both fell to the floor.
"OLIVER, NO!!! THERE HAS TO BE ANOTH—"
But it was too late.
With everything Oliver had in him, he punched Xbot's screen—over and over and over again. It cracked more with each punch, and Oliver's knuckles bled profusely from the shattered glass.
He charged his fist and Power Pushed his screen ad hard as he could, followed by an uppercut, and another uppercut, until the face began to glitch out.
Xbot tried, but could do nothing to fight back.
Oliver stood up onto Xbot's chest, taking a hold of his arm while his face glitched violently.
"OLIVER, NO!!!"
He ignored her, ripping Xbots arm out of his socket. Wasting no time, he dropped to the floor, and with everything he had yanked on Xbot's screen.
Metal bent, wires snapped, and his other arm failed until in one final pull, his head came clean off, face still glitching for a haunting few seconds, until all that was left was black.
This time, Oliver waited. Prepared. He waited in silence for a good 5 minutes. When nothing happened, and he didn't come back, Oliver rolled to the ground.
He did it.
He won.
He tried to relax his aching muscles, but so many parts of him felt broken. All he could do was lie there, motionless.
"Oliver! What have you done???" She cried. "I told you not to break Xbot!!!"
He was too exhausted to even speak.
"Now I'm gonna have to write a letter to the Ruler about all this. And not just any letter—a long letter! Plus I have to tell him about how not only STOLE Xbot, but also BROKE HIM. Not to mention EVERYTHING ELSE HE—"
"Great job, human!" A little voice said, cutting off Marilyn.
Both of them looked over to see a little girl standing there, looking pleased with Oliver's work.
"Marilyn, I think some kid lost her mom… I'm too tired to help her, so you're gonna have to…"
"Um… Oliver? That's the Rank 8 here in the underworld."
Oliver looked over at the little girl again. "Rank 8?"
"Yep, your girlfriend is correct—I'm Rank 8! Also known as Sara the Shark Girl."
Oliver took a closer look at her. She was dressed in a shark–themed jacket, with long sleeves going past her hands and black sea boots. He could also make out a very real shark fin jutting through the back of the jacket.
"I'll forgive you this time," she said, "because you actually did my job for me. But, that's not the only reason I'm here." She pulled out a pencil and paper. "I came to ask—do you have a rank yet?"
"Uhh… no," Oliver said.
"Oh, okay," she wrote something down. "Would you like one?"
He struggled to salivate correctly, making it hard to speak. But he managed to anyway. "Marilyn was… training me to fight in the up-upcoming Rank Trials."
"Oh, really? What rank is she?"
"Rank 47!" Marilyn called out proudly, hoping to make a good impression on the Rank 8.
"Oh, okay," she scribbled something down. "Well, human—luckily for you, I'm going to sign you up myself."
"Wait, really?!" Marilyn cried.
"Yeah, of course! I'd like to thank him for doing all the dirty work."
"Oliver," Marilyn said, running over to him, "do you realize what this means?! This means that you'll probably have a chance of getting a higher rank, since the Rank 8 is recommending you!!!"
Oliver would have had more of a reaction if his skull wasn't pounding to three different rhythms.
"Yep, it's all true. All I need is your name."
"Oliver. Oliver Rojas," he said.
She scribbled it down. "Alright Oliver—good luck. You'll probably get a call tomorrow, maybe sometime in the morning if I'm not too busy. I've got some paperwork to fill out now," she said, holding the paper, "but be expecting a call. See ya later!"
She walked away, and Oliver collapsed his head.
Marilyn crouched next to him. "Oliver, do you realize how lucky you are!!"
"No," he said. "All I realize is how tired I am."
She rolled her head. "Don't worry, Oliver. I'll carry you." She picked him up, slinging him over her shoulder. She frowned.
"Again."
