My girlfriend is perfect; In every single way, she’s entirely beyond reproach. Her grades are immaculate, and her personality is cultured and graceful, having come from a well-off family. More than that, our relationship has been better than I could have hoped. A few days ago, after months of dating, we shared our first kiss, which was one of my life's greatest moments.
It’s the first day of school after a long weekend, and it will be the first time I’ve seen her in a few days. She’s been pretty busy recently and it’s honestly driving me a little insane, as I haven’t seen her since we kissed. I want to know if she liked it as much as I did, or if she wants to maybe… do it more?
Either way, I really just want to see her. Ever since we started dating, she’s been the best part of my life, and everything’s just a little duller when I haven’t seen her in a while. She wasn’t at school today, so I ended up needing to go to her house to get my fix. The time we spend together is always the highlight of my day.
So… why is someone screaming? What reason would someone have to be screaming right now?
It’s a persistent scream that just won’t stop, coming from everywhere and nowhere. It pounds at my skull almost like it’s coming from inside my head.
Oh.
I’m screaming.
The red-tinted water is just barely visible over the rim of the bathtub from where I am. My back is pressed against the wall and I’m curled up into a ball doing everything I can to avert my gaze. The persistent screaming hasn’t stopped.
All at once, reality hits me.
My butt hurts. I hit the ground pretty hard when I fell backward.
My throat is so strained that it’s painful, but the screaming just won’t seem to stop.
My girlfriend is dead.
She’s in the bathtub, the water is tinted red with her blood.
Why? Why did she do it? Why would she do it? Everything was great! We were doing great! Things were going great! Why?
I can’t seem to get that one word out of my mind. Why?
I can’t come up with even a single reason why she would do this. She’s the most perfect person that I know! She never seems to struggle with anything, has many friends, a loving family, great grades, stellar looks, the most amazing sense of humor, a smile to die for…
Everything. She has… everything. She was everything.
I stand up from the fetal position, and with my upper lip trembling, I step into the bathroom, through the open door. The screaming has stopped. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, red-faced and teary-eyed as I inch closer to her, but I can’t bring myself to look at her.
After ages pass, I find myself beside the bathtub but am struggling to find the courage to look in.
I take a deep breath, then another, then look directly down into the bathtub.

I never thought the first time I would see her naked would be like this.
Her wrists are slit, turning the water progressively deeper and deeper red. Her beautiful face is pointed upwards, her lifeless eyes looking past me, past the ceiling, further than anyone could see. Her face is framed by her long, lovely brown hair & her skin is completely white. A lock of hair has found its way in front of her face, and I reach down and brush it aside almost out of instinct.
My mind floods with disjointed images and feelings that I can barely comprehend.
5 figures, each associated with an immense amount of heartbreak and betrayal.
Four of them take turns pushing her just a little bit closer to the edge and through this all she’s guided by a fifth figure, cloaked in shadow.
Anger, hopelessness, and sadness pass by as she steps closer to the cliff, and finally she reaches resignation.
She was dead before she ever stepped off.
I yank my hand away and once again fall backward onto my butt. What the fuck? Was that how she felt? I recognized the first four people… but who was the last one?
I idly look down at my hand and notice something a little off. My hand is dark gray. It takes a moment to register that something is wrong, but once I do, I jump up in a panic. I frenziedly look at my body and see that I am now that same grey in my entirety.
As I back out of the bathroom, I notice something in the mirror and turn to it.
I can’t help but gasp.
More than just my skin, my face has changed entirely. My brown hair has changed to nearly black, and my face has become something distinctly nonhuman. Rather than the normal, masculine face I’m used to, something more akin to a gargoyle looks back at me.
My eyes are sharp and menacing. My nose looks like a cross of a bat’s and a human’s, with just a little more of a ridge than a bat’s, but a bit more upturned than a human’s. My ears, however, are distinctly batlike and jut outwards from the sides of my head.
The shock and horror that I should be feeling are replaced by alien fascination as I move my head around, then lift an arm, to just confirm that the figure in the mirror is really me.
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway pulls me out of my stupor. Emily’s parents are home.
Emily.
I glance back at the bathtub but look away as quickly as she enters my vision.
I need to get out of here. I don’t want to leave Emily like this, but I can’t let anyone see me like this, not before I get home. I run out of the bathroom but stop as I cross the threshold of the door. I take one last look back at her, lying in the water.
Something happened when I touched her, I don’t quite know what it was, but I have an idea of why she did this now. The people who pushed her to do this are going to pay.
I run to the end of the hallway, open the window, and slowly scale my way down from the second story.
Luckily I wore a hoodie, so I can pull up the hood and stick my hands in my pockets to hide most of the weird features, but still, It’s gonna be a long journey home.
