Saira

Saira made her way to the cave of her two friends Blossom and Armin. The cave of the two dragons was one of the smaller caves, and it was located on the edge of their colony.

'Saira! What a nice surprise!' Armin greeted her with a friendly grumble. 'Look! Our first egg is finally here! Blossom laid it yesterday. After a month of pregnancy. It was a long night, but finally, we can hatch our first little dragon!' Blossom warmed a shimmering egg with her body, which Armin nudged contentedly with his nose. Blossom snorted exhaustedly.

"Congratulations!' Saira rubbed her head against Armin’s and then against Blossom’s head, who nodded tiredly at her. The pregnancy of dragons lasted between one and two months. During this period, they formed the egg with the fetus. After the egg was laid it hatched after a few weeks when the little dragon was ready. Some dragons hatched after ten weeks, others after six.

'We're already thinking about names!' Blossom announced. 'Please tell my husband that Buttyputty is a terrible name!'

'That is a really terrible one!' Saira lay down next to her friend and lovingly sniffed the tiny egg. 'What do you think? Will it be a girl? Or a boy?'

'Whatever it is, I like Buttyputty! It's a cute name!', grumbled Armin. 'Blossom didn't like my other suggestions either!'

'Because none of your suggestions are names!' Blossom leaned against Saira. The two formed a warm shelter around the shimmering egg.

'What kind of names would those be?', Saira asked amused.

Armin rubbed his muzzle against Blossom's head. She sighed contentedly. Then Armin lay down next to the two. 'My ideas are Schnurpsel, Troll, Bear, Flower, and Star.'

'I like Brigitte or Manfred', Blossom replied. 'Arnold. Hanna.'

"I want our little dragon, our Buttyputty, to have a special name. Saira? What do you think? Something that matches the name of my beloved! Blossom. Her parents have style.'

Blossom hissed. She didn't particularly like her own name.

Saira hadn't actually intended to help with the choice of name, but she surrendered to her fate. 'You could use a double name. Hanna Star or Arnold Bear. Just please, don't call your child Buttyputty or Schnurpsel.'

'That would be a possibility', Armin agreed. The dragons talked for a while until Saira had enough of possible baby names and said goodbye. Instead of flying, she climbed down the mountain. She enjoyed climbing down the barren stone from time to time. She loved the scratching sound of her sharp claws when they hit the stone. She looked at the bright stone of the mountains and the dunes of sand. Her desert. Her home. The sun burned pleasantly, and it smelled of dry stone and the few plants that could grow in these conditions. A small river made its way through the sand. On its banks stood a few trees, bushes, and reeds. They stubbornly defied the relentless sun.

After some time, two more white dragons flew toward her. Pelle and Alwin. The two were slightly taller than Saira.

'Hello darling Saira!', Pelle greeted her. 'How nice to find your elegant self here!'

'Or just hello. If that's what you prefer.' Alwin muttered softly and buried his face in her wings. 'Have you visited Blossom and Almin?'

Saira, Vicky, and Pelle used to claim that Almin and Alwin were twins because their names sounded so similar. The two had then referred to themselves as brothers, although they were not related. Almin in particular thought it funny.

Saira shook Alwin out of her feathers in amusement. 'Stop it! YOU have your own dragon to cuddle! Cuddle with Pelle.'

'But you're soft too.' Alwin's head found its way back into her feathers.

Pelle snorted and rolled his eyes. 'How was it at Blossom’s? Is the egg already there?'

'Yes. It's here now. They think about baby names. The two of them could not be dissuaded from the topic.' She tried again to shake Alwin out of her feathers, but the other dragon only protested.

Pelle, finally, lovingly bit his best friend's wings and pulled him away from Saira. 'I'm not surprised. Alwin was already thinking about baby names when he was just learning to fly. His mother was really annoyed. Do you remember? And his ideas were all terrible.'

'That was a very long time ago...' Saira let out a soft, friendly rumble. You'd think Armin would have better ideas after almost three hundred years.

'I'm flying home! See you later, yes?' Armin rubbed his head briefly against Pelles and flew away.

'And Alwin's capacity for social contacts is used up for today!', joked Pelle. 'Shall we visit Vicky? Ah, yes! Just for your information: Today I feel rather masculine... I don’t know. Female doesn't suit me today. Vicky said I change my gender too often. But sometimes one fits, sometimes the other and sometimes both don't suit me... What do you think?'

'To me, you are always you.'

'That warms my small, tender heart!' He rubbed his head against hers and put one of his wings over her. 'You know what? I briefly saw a black dragon, yesterday! Luckily, he passed by.'

'A black dragon? How exciting!'

'I don't like the sparkle in your pretty eyes, Saira!' Pelle nudged her with his muzzle. 'You have a wonderful girlfriend!'

'With which I might move into a cave... Vicky had been thinking about leaving her parents' cave for some time. She has her own now and wants me to move in with her. But my parents need me. My brother needs me. And I don't know how long I have left.'

Dragons often did not leave their parents' cave until they had found a partner with whom they wanted to lay their own egg. Until then, the families lived together in a confined space.

'Well. We don't think about such dark things! Do you want to visit your adorable girlfriend?'

'Vicky will be happy!'

The two friends took off to the skies. They flew high above the mountains until they came to a cave entrance that led to their greatest treasure. To the old paintings and the empty eggshells of all the dragons that had ever been born in their colony. The way to the chamber was narrow, so they took the form of humans. Like this, they fit comfortably through the aisles.

In the form of a human, Pelle had light blond hair. Saira's hair was orange. She felt strange every time she took this form. Out of place.

They came into the large chamber where Vicky kept the paintings and eggshells clean. She was also in human form, as this was the only way she could clean here. "There you are!" Grinning, Vicky put her hands on her curvy hips. Even as a human being, Saira found her pretty. Vicky's hair was light brown and fell down her back in light waves. All white dragons had bright orange eyes. They were reminiscent of fire. Saira was in love with Vicky's fire. "Perfect! You can help me clean!"

"When cleaning? I'm not your cleaning worker!", Pelle grumbled and gave Vicky an offended look. "I'm your best friend. Your best diva. A god of glamour. No cleaning, lady! I leave you, ladies, alone. Then you can clean, or whatever you do alone in the dark!" And Pelle made his way back.

Saira and Vicky grinned at each other like two teenagers in love. "Alone in the dark?" Saira giggled.

"Very tempting. But this place is sacred!" Vicky shook her head. "Come. You can help me keep our heritage pretty. These eggshells are a real treasure. There is nothing more important than these brilliant memories."

"If you say that."

Saira helped Vicky clean all the eggshells from the dust. To do this, they use their hands. They gently stroked the partly ancient shells. "It's wonderful to share this with you." Vicky sighed contentedly and kissed Saira's cheek.

"But I'm afraid I have to go. I promised mom to hunt something. A few rabbits, perhaps. Or something else", she murmured softly.

"What a pity. But that’s fine. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Of course!" Saira wrapped her arms around her friend and kissed her soft lips. "See you tomorrow!"

As Saira left the cave and was about to transform back, she discovered Armin, who had already taken human form. "Armin. Hello!"

"Ah. We meet again." He smiled. "Did you visit Vicky? I want to discuss something with her briefly."

"Well then. I’m sure she'll be happy to see you. See you soon! And don't leave Blossom alone for too long!" She winked at him, then turned into a massive dragon and flew away.

With a feeling of euphoria, she glided through the air.
