Jane
The statue of the first was gone. That was terrible. It was equally horrible when I saw Harper and several others (including my parents) return with stolen eggshells.
Now I sat in the place where the stature of the first had previously stood and watched as the thieves were received cheering. Solemnly they danced through the air and let out cries of battle. Something that was rarely heard.
Whatever they had done, I couldn't imagine it was a good idea. But we harpies, if provoked, were not peaceful or diplomatic people. No. We got aggressive quickly. I had always been different from the others in this respect. My parents affectionately said I ended up too pacifistic.
But that wasn't all I thought about.
I wanted to help Tinke enjoy flying again. I couldn't get the pretty harpy out of my head.
How could I help her? I couldn't carry her. I would have the same problems as her parents. Tinke's wings would hinder me while flying and we could crash together. I'd rather avoid that. Could I carry her in a basket? But if she fell out?
The basket would have to be specially secured...
And then there was this terrible theft. Of course, we had been robbed. But punish all dragons for that? Only the perpetrator had to be brought to justice...
I closed my eyes and tried to clear my head. I pushed all thoughts away from me. I was looking for peace...
Everything around me was white. I felt like I was in a cloud. Only that it was neither cold nor damp here. A beautiful young woman with magnificent golden wings stood in front of me. Her eyes glowed white and her hair shimmered goldenly. Rainbow-colored light surrounded her like a shimmering crystal.
"Hello Jane!", she said. "I've been waiting for you."
"Who are you?" She looked familiar to me. She looked... Like the statue of the first.
She laughed softly. "That’s right. My name is Iris. But you know me as the First or the Great."
"You can read my mind?"
"I am in your thoughts." She winked at me. "I've been waiting a long time to finally be able to talk to you. Now, how can I help you?"
"Oh." Was I really facing the First? Or was I just dreaming? "Shouldn't you know? If you are in my thoughts?"
"Certainly, but it makes it easier to start a conversation if I pretend I don't know." She put her arm around me with a smile and took me under her wings. "Are you worried? Because of the stolen eggs? And because of your friend. I'm sure you'll come up with something to help your Tinke. And as for the dragons. I had asked Hailey to find a peaceful solution."
"Peaceful?"
"Yes, peaceful."
"Were you really human? Weren’t you able to walk?" I blurted out. The old question circled through my thoughts. "How could you save your brother?"
"When I was human, I was a witch. A powerful witch, but I didn't find out until I tried to save my brother. Our origin is magic. And by magic, I'm here. By mistake, I made us very aggressive through the anger I felt at that moment... I have a rough idea of what the future holds if Hailey doesn't listen to you. I don't want to see any of my winged children die because of simple theft. And I'm not sure if another theft can prevent tragedy."
"But it's our statue!"
"Just a statue. I am here. Talk to Hailey. But she won't want to listen to you. She's terribly stubborn! But, please, try it. Tell her I don't want another fight. Tell her to make peace with the dragons. The time for fighting has not yet arrived. And don't worry about Tinke. You will be able to help her. She is important. For you and the future!"
"I'm supposed to talk to Hailey? At the moment, she's not very happy with me!" And what did she mean that Tinke was important?
The first one stroked my hair. "I know. I was there. By the way, I found your little joke very funny! Talk to her. Please. Now is not the time for a fight."
Something made me wonder. How did I get here? "Iris, yes?"
"Exactly."
"When I'm here, talking to you... Am I a shaman?"

She laughed again. It was a satisfied laugh. Bell-bright and friendly. "Yes. You are a distant relative of my brother. Just like Hailey and your dad. However, he cannot talk to me. Very few have the ability. Your sisters will not inherit this ability. So I'm glad you finally found your way here. But now, you should go back. Your friends are looking for you. They should arrive any moment."
"But how do I get back?", I asked. I didn't even know how I got here.
"Just open your eyes!"
I opened my eyes. The sun blinded me. I was back on the mountain. Rosalie and Falk arrived.
"Jane! Here you are!", shouted Falk. "What are you doing here? Everyone is in turmoil! The dragons didn't want to hand over the statue, so Harper brought a deposit!"
"I talked to the first one. I met her!" I hardly listened to him. "I saw her!"
"What?" Rosalie frowned and flapped her colorful wings.
"I’m a shaman. And it is not a deposit. It's theft. The first does not like this. She didn't want that. But... I want to help Tinke!"
"Wait!" Falk sat down next to me. "Slowly. You are a shaman. Did you talk to the first one? And... What does that have to do with Tinke?"
"She said we would find a solution together", I explained. "We can help Tinke. She said it was important for the future. And she wants me to talk to Hailey."
"If you say that?" Rosalie looked at Falk in confusion. "So you're a shaman? Like Hailey?"
I nodded. "I'm supposed to bring her to her senses. But I don't know if I can do it. I'll try anyway."
"And you want Tinke to be able to fly?", she asked.
I nodded again. "She's a good friend! And so sweet, nice, and pretty! She dreams of flying at night. I want to make it possible for her. But we can’t carry her. Her wings will flutter uncontrollably through the air... That's too dangerous!"
"We'll help you, of course!", said Falk quickly. "But... We cannot cure her. We would have to get her in the air somehow…"
"I was thinking of a basket", I said. "But we don't have such a big basket. And she could fall out of it!"
"A basket?" Rosalie grinned. "We would have to weave a suitable basket ourselves. And we would have to secure it appropriately... Maybe if two carry the basket?"
Falk pressed a kiss to my cheek. "We can do it. Your sweetheart will fly with us!"
"My what?" I leaned away from him indignantly.
"Your sweeeeeeeeeeit, and pretty Tinke. Our Jane has a crush!" He jumped up and danced around Rosalie and me with fluttering wings. Then he stuck out his tongue at me.
"Say that again and I'll tie a bell on your carrot", I threatened. The idea was silly, but it was the first thing that came to mind as a threat.
"A bell?" Falk put his arm around the giggling Rosalie. "That's an interesting idea."
I groaned in annoyance.
My friends wanted to help me take Tinke into the air. That made me happy. But first, I had to talk to Hailey.
Besides, I forgot to ask the First why Tinke was important.
She spoke of fighting. And that it was not yet the time for it. And of my sisters, I didn't have any... Oh.
