Helios pulled away his hand as Krutak raised Argolos’ severed pincer above his head. He mercilessly plunged the makeshift weapon through the demon’s third eye. Argolos shrieked while thrashing in pain, throwing aside the burly Krutak. Forcing himself to his feet, Argolos wildly swung his mobile forelimb while the paralyzed one dragged limply through the coarse sand.
Now’s my chance to finish this. Break!
The soul brand inside his consciousness surged with the true meaning of his name. Intangible tendrils shot from his eyes toward the disorientated Dolore demon. The invisible strands collided with one of Argolos’s hind legs, damaging the chiton armour in a shower of debris and collapsing him to the ground. This time, there was a fierce recoil inside Helios’s consciousness as it failed to completely shatter the target, leaving Helios momentarily stunned.
It seems that my magic can feel the impact when I use it. Argolas’ hind legs are much more resilient than his weaker forelimb. The soul brand must be something metaphysical that’s a part of me and not separate like I’d assume magic to be.
But why’s it so rare for a demon to develop it? Tsiyaha acted as if the thought had never even occurred to her. Maybe, it’s something to do with considering the Soul Brand a kind of shackles? No one would willingly choose to reinforce their prison.
Krutak took advantage of the suspense in the action to leap back on top of the heavily wounded Argolos. Anticipating the ambush, the kneeling Argolos raised his unparalyzed forelimb. Using the momentum of Krutak’s charge to skewer him down to the elbow.
The Dolore demon dragged Krutak close as he helplessly flailed. Argolos began rhythmically breathing, coaxing an unwilling stream of lifeforce from Krutak. The strand flickered tentatively out of Krutak’s mouth at first, giving him the opportunity to resist. He floundered while attempting to swallow back the steady stream in panic. Argolos ignored his struggles to drag Krutak closer, his own severe injuries forgotten to continue enticing out the string of lifeforce.
Helios motionlessly watched in a daze, still recovering from the recoil earlier. Something nudged him violently from behind, breaking his stupor. Tsiyaha gripped ahold of Helios’s shoulders. Before he could react, she gave him a violent shake, causing his tentacle dreadlocks to flap about in the air.
“Don’t just stand there, kill it!” Tsiyaha urgently shrieked, spittle spraying at his face.
She released his shoulders while giving him a shove in Argolas’ direction. Immediately after, she ran toward the fighting pair entangled on the ground. Helios hesitated for only a moment before refocusing his attention on the Dolore demon. It was quickly overpowering Krutak as it gradually regained the use of its second forelimb.
Tsiyaha quickly crossed the distance holding an obsidian knife in her hand, which she plunged into the Dolore demon’s neck. The string of lifeforce flowing from Krutak suddenly stopped and retreated back into his mouth.
Helios tackled it to the ground, Tsiyaha dogpiling on top of him. Krutak gripped the pincer piercing him, with a huge grunt of pain he dragged himself up the forelimb embedded in him. The three hovered their faces over the Dolore demon and began the breathing ritual.

At first, Argolos was able to resist, twisting his skull-like visage to the side. Eventually, his mandibles were pried open, releasing a steady stream of life force. The dense soul essence was split into three uneven strands flowing toward each of them.
My portion is noticeably thicker than the others. Is that because I’ve upgraded my Soul Brand? That’s the only reason I can imagine it might be. Otherwise, it doesn’t make any sense. Argolos certainly won’t be dictating how his soul’s divided.
The Dolore demon's struggles grew weak, his body visibly wilting. The portion of essence flowing towards Krutak grew in size. It was initially the smallest but he was able to extract as much as Tsiyaha as he recovered. The pincer embedded through his chest crumbled into dust, allowing the wound to close behind it.
Argolos barrel rolled to the side, attempting to toss them all off. Helios climbed to his feet while Tsiyaha remained on his back. The stream of life force continued unimpeded as he clawed through the black sand with one forelimb, the flesh crumbling from his bones with every inch. He reached out toward Helios with a pleading expression, only to be swept away as a cloud of dust as they devoured the last of his soul.
This energy isn’t enough to make me a Dolore demon, we’re splitting it three ways. But I’ve discovered something interesting. Argolos’ third eye has a mid-range hypnotic influence. It’ll nicely supplement the paralytic effect of my dreadlocks. How shall I distribute the remainder? I know, an extra set of arms could come in handy.
Haha, that joke was in poor taste, Helios, and you know it.
Helios lightly chuckled to himself as he directed the life force to make changes throughout his body. His scrapes and bruises were knit closed by the refreshing energy wherever it passed. It moved from his stomach to accumulate just below his shoulders. He felt a second pair of arms identical to his first emerge from his back. He flexed his new six-fingered fists to test their movement before quickly proceeding to the next phase of his evolution.
The soul essence resumed its journey upward, reshaping his skull. It elongated to accommodate room for a vertical third eye in the centre of his brow. It possessed the same stunning effect as Argolos’ but looked slightly different, matching Helios’ indigo iris. The remainder of the life force was greedily consumed by the Soul Brand, allowing it significantly grow in strength.
Opening his three eyes, Helios shifted his attention to investigate the changes in his companions. Tsiyaha turned to gaze back at him. Helios suddenly became aware of their nakedness. She had grown hair that reached down past her waist, using it to conceal her breasts and private parts.
Aside from that, an exoskeleton half-helm had formed to protect the top of her head, leaving her nose and lower face exposed. Her lips had become more supple as her features became more defined.
Helios looked away, noticing that Krutak had undergone the most dramatic change of them all.
