Inside Fastidium, the bustling city was alive with activity. It had an unexpectedly jovial atmosphere, with laughter being heard in many directions. Roughshod buildings were stacked haphazardly atop each other like a small child’s blocks. It created weaving walkways and alleys between the mismatched cube structures.
Helios looked up and saw a wondrous sight of winged demons fluttering upward. Lanterns were strung on ropes between the stacks. They stretched up as far as the eye could see, providing warm light to the city. A group of tiny demons the size of feral cats balanced across the lines while a Dolore shouted abuse while waving a fist at them.
A Luminare demon bumped against Krutak in the press of bodies, jostling Helios from his reverie. Krutak came to a halt. Helios climbed up and peered over Krutak’s shoulder. In front of them was one of the tiny demons in an official-looking white uniform on a tall podium. There were many such podiums filtering the traffic entering the city into multiple streams.
“Sigils, please,” the tiny demon instructed the trio in a pitched voice. She vaguely resembled a gnome the size of a human toddler with rounded ears and small protruding horns. She had trademark demonic eyes with faint patterns on her skin. She cleared her throat impatiently. “Zegg said Sigils, please. You are holding up the line.”
“Sorry, it’s our first time in Fastidium,” Helios said, giving Tsiyaha a nudge. He projected his Sigil to the podium from his Soul Brand and Tsiyaha followed suit. The clerk flicked through pages of a ledger set in front of her.
“The big one doesn’t need to, Zegg sees that he belongs to your Familia. Thank you. There’s only one rule within Fastidium ‘A demon cannot prey on one of a lower caste or they forfeit the same protection.’ One moment please, Let Zegg check the records,” Zegg said, glancing at Krutak to prevent him from displaying his Sigil. Zegg reached into the air and a rolled scroll appeared in both hands with a puff of smoke. She inhaled its length like a fine cigar. She was seated a little higher than Helios mounted on Krutak’s back. She had to lean down to offer the scroll. “Ah, here it is. Helios you have a Task here requesting you by name. It smells about two or three hundred years old. You took your time in reaching Fastidium, didn’t you?”
“Um, what’s a Task?” Helios hesitantly asked, stretching up to accept the scroll.
“It’s one of an Imp’s duties to distribute them around Hell’s cities on behalf of the Hellgate. Only Imps belonging to the Kings, such as Zegg are trusted with the responsibility of named Tasks,” Zegg said, proudly tapping a sigil embossed on her robe. It squirmed in protest. “Oh hush, you. You’ll normally find generic Tasks plastered on street walls for anyone to take. Sometimes you’ll stumble across them down an alleyway. It all depends on how lazy the Imp is.”
“That doesn’t really explain anything to me,” Helios replied with a frown.
“Whoops, Zegg rambles sometimes. The Hellgate provides them to Imps, and it’s one of our tasks to distribute them. A Task exists outside of normal time. For example, yours is a few centuries old. When you accept the invitation to the mortal world, it’ll take you to the moment the summoning ritual was concluded. It doesn’t matter what year it currently is on Earth. Complete their request and be rewarded with Ethos, the currency of Hell,” Zegg informed him.
“Hell has currency?” Tsiyaha asked in bewilderment.
“Of course it does, silly. Different tiers of Ethos is produced from the sacrifice’s captured spirit during the summoning process. If you complete the Task, it becomes Ethos and you get to keep it. Zegg is sure that you can learn more when you spend it. The Dolore behind you is getting impatient. Zegg has a job to do,” Zegg said, touching a finger to her mouth with a worried expression.

Helios glanced over his shoulder and saw a demon that slightly resembled an upright llama with a pair of outward horns. It had grey fur and a bright blue wild mullet. The Dolore was glaring at him with barely concealed impatience, hopping from foot to foot. It got thrust aside by a huge demon pushing to the front of the queue. He approached the podium and easily shoved Kurtak to the side. The podium which towered over their heads only reached the massive demon’s sternum.
He was a grotesque mass of flesh with large double layered floppy ears and curling horns. It had two furtive eyes resting directly above a wide toothless mouth. A trunk drooped down beside a long wispy beard.
“Let me through, oathbreaker," the demon demanded while slapping a hand down on the podium with his Sigil at the ready. Its slavering gums were on full display as it maliciously grinned down at Zegg.
“Y-you know this is the Dolore entrance. The Vulgaris entrance is over there, Shazz. Why do you always have to come and torment Zegg?”
“You still owe me, that’s why. You may have broken your oath to me and turned into an imp. But you can’t escape me that easily,” Shazz replied, leaning in close. His rancid breath blew against Zegg’s face. Zegg turned her face away in disgust as the trunk caressed her cheek to brush back her hair. “You’re mine, Zegg. Always have been.”
“Do not touch Zegg. She belongs to the King of Pride. If you harm her, you’ll be punished for damaging his property,” Zegg whimpered while continuing to allow his assault. Shazz pulled away his truck, a string of mucus connecting from it to her face.
“For now, little pet. I’ve been keeping an eye on your progress. Soon, you’ll have finished assigning your six-hundredth-and-sixty-sixth Task. Then you’ll have earned back your true name. Then I’ll have you back,” Shazz answered with a chuckle. He reached down and unexpectedly gripped Tsiyaha by the hair, effortlessly lifting from Krutak’s back. “What about you, poppet, how about you come work for old Shazza? You’ll fetch a good amount of Ethos on your back with looks like yours.”
“Hiss, not interested. I don’t trade my dignity for coin,” Tsiyaha replied, clutching at his wrist the size of her waist to alleviate the weight on her hair. The snakes ineffectively attempted to bite into his flesh.
“Hmph, Zegg was the same, in the beginning. I bought her in the bazaar. She didn’t want to buy back her freedom and cheated me. Look close, this is what happens to oathbreakers,” Shazz said, dangling Tsiyaha in front of Zegg.
“Release her,” Helios warned, standing atop Krutak’s shoulder. He wielded his staff in two hands at his side. Shazz bent down to his level while closing one eye. His massive open eye scrutinised Helios close up.
“Why would I go and do something like that? I don’t see your Sigil on her. She don’t belong to nobody which means old Shazza is the first to want her,” Shazz mocked.
“I, Tsiyaha, swear upon my true name to serve Helios…” Tsiyaha strained out through gritted teeth. Shazz instantly turned hostile and whipped her to dangle in front of him with a snarl.
