As the demon walked across the black sand, her appearance was revealed to be similar to his, only feminine in nature. Her unclothed body was undeniably female. Looking down in horror, Helios realised they both possessed the usual human appendages.
“If I agree, what do I call you?” Helios asked. Gulping down his distress, he covered his nakedness while avoiding her gaze. She chuckled in amusement as she watched his actions.
“Names have power, only you know the true meaning of yours. No demon’s words sound the same. Fortunately, the Soul Brand translates for us. Call me Tsiyaha,” Tsiyaha introduced herself with a smile, exposing sharp teeth.
“I don’t quite understand. Anyway, my name is Helios,” Helios replied.
When he spoke his name out loud, he paid special attention to the strange effect of translating their words. His name came out as something entirely foreign and unrecognisable, comparable to the other demon’s name.
“You don’t need to understand. It’s just how things are here, Helios,” Tsiyaha spoke.
All of their words were instinctively translated, including his name. She maintained eye contact while cautiously crossing the distance between them. Her hips swayed rhythmically until she came to a stop in front of him, gazing earnestly into his eyes. Helios warily watched the demon standing in front of him. His body tensed, resisting the urge to retreat.
After she detected his hesitation, Tsiyaha released an intoxicating aroma. Helios’s eyes glazed over as the scent put him at ease and made him want to get closer to her. She walked behind him, placing her hands on his shoulders. She leaned in close to whisper into his ear.
“There’s no need to be so cautious. You’re mine now. If I wanted to hurt you, I would’ve already done it. You’re so weak, it’s pitiful. We’re going to hunt and have you quickly evolve to be of more use to me. Shall we begin?” Tsiyaha seductively asked.
The scent coming from Tsiyaha’s body suddenly stopped when she stepped away. Helios gulped at how easily her display had rendered him powerless. He shook his head to clear it before answering, primal fury igniting within him.
“Do that again and we’re going to have a problem. Kill me if you must, I’m not your plaything. I’ll let it slide this time. Let’s stop wasting time and get started,” Helios angrily stated.
“Oh, the little Newborn demon finally bares its fangs. Good. I don’t need trash if we’re to thrive. We’ll search along the beach for more Newborns reaching the shore. They’re everywhere so it won’t take long,” Tsiyaha said with an amused smile, crossing her arms under her breasts.
Helios heaved a sigh and nodded in understanding. He searched around himself for a weapon, quickly finding a jagged piece of rock. Picking it up, the rock looked similar to obsidian. It felt like glass in his hand. He went over to a nearby stalagmite, striking it with the make-shift weapon. It bounced off with a ringing sound but otherwise remained intact.
It looks like obsidian but it’s not. It’ll make a good weapon. It’s sharp and won’t break easily. This’ll do nicely.
“Satisfied? Time to go,” Tsiyaha said. She started to sneak along the black beach through the forest of stalagmites.
Helios followed closely behind her until she unexpectedly blended into the environment. He lost sight of her, causing him to look around for traces of her. As he was about to call out to her, he caught a glimpse of movement.

He turned and unexpectedly made eye contact with her beside a stalagmite. She placed a finger over her lips to silence him. Once she was confident he wasn’t going to make a noise, she pressed up against the stalagmite and gestured ahead. He joined her and looked over her shoulder to where she pointed. He couldn’t see anything at first until he peered closer.
In front of them was a single Newborn demon. It was crouched in a hollow underneath a jagged outcropping. The Newborn’s back was to them, a strange maggot-like creature writhing in front of it. The disgusting creature was hissing loudly while pinned to the ground. The Newborn repeatedly hacked at it with a spiked rock, putrid-smelling blood spraying from the wounds to sizzle on the black sand.
Tsiyaha motioned Helios forward, creeping around the opposite side of their stalagmite. They approached in a pincer formation. As Helios got closer, he could clearly see the appearance of the struggling maggot-like creature.
It had no eyes. A slavering mouth filled with layers of serrated teeth. A single, pointed horn was in the centre of its disgusting head. Nine pairs of insectoid legs scrambled helplessly in the air, its resistance growing weaker until it lay still.
That must be a Demonic Larva. It’s repulsive. It’s almost the size of the Newborn beside it. Which come to think of, isn’t very impressive. We’re barely the size of an early adolescent child.
The Newborn excitedly laughed at its success. The Demonic Larva had become weak from blood loss. Leaning close to the maggot-like creature, the Newborn pinned its head with both hands. Hovering its open mouth over the Larva, the Newborn started to inhale rhythmically. Helios instinctively understood its actions. When he’d seen it happen before in his previous life, he couldn’t comprehend what was happening. The Newborn was devouring the Demonic Larva’s soul.
The sigils our souls have been mutilated into allow us to consume the life force of others. The Newborn’s attempting to drag its soul out to be devoured but the larvae’s symbol is fighting back. It’s near death and can’t hold out for much longer.
After Helios thought that, a stream of light was coaxed out from the Demonic Larva’s mouth. It started to wildly thrash in a last-ditch effort to resist. The thrashing stopped, its bloated body quickly withering into dust.
The Newborn giggled in delight and jumped in a circle while punching the air victoriously. The muscle and sinew under its skin moved to grow larger, becoming much more muscular. It suddenly noticed Helios sneaking up on it. It spun to face him with a hiss while dropping into a crouch. That was the moment Tsiyaha had been waiting for.
The Newborn continued to transform as she ambushed it from behind. She looped both of her arms under its armpits. She laced her hands together behind its neck, pinning its arms above its head.
“Kill it now!” Tsiyaha shouted, struggling to restrain the muscular newborn.
Helios involuntarily drooled at the thought of devouring the demon’s life force. His hands shaking with excitement, he tightened his grip on his weapon. Lunging forward without hesitation, he pierced his sharp obsidian into its exposed neck.
The demon’s eyes widened in fear as rancid blood gushed from the wound, submerging Helios’s hand in gore. Helios’ body instinctively began the breathing ritual to consume life force. His Soul Brand began to writhe, invisible tendrils extended from his throat into the hapless Newborn in front of him.
He felt a vortex form inside his stomach, creating a vacuum. The intangible tendrils dragged a stream of light from his terrified victim’s mouth to flow into his. The moment the light reached his lips, he was overwhelmed with the feeling of ecstasy. Invigorated by the taste, he urged his Soul Brand to devour the Newborn’s essence faster.
As the Newborn demon’s body rapidly withered, Helios felt his vitality rapidly increasing. The stream of light abruptly ended, mummifying the demon’s corpse in Tsiyaha’s grasp. Tightening her hold, the Newborn crumbled into a heap of bones amid a pile of dust at her feet.
