“Ah!” Jihoon and the other boy yelled as they crashed into the ground along with their bikes. People around them turned to see where the commotion was coming from. Seeing that it was just two high school boys being their typical teenage selves, they continued along with their morning.
“I’m so sorry!” Jihoon quickly scrambled to his feet and offered a hand to the other boy. “I got distracted for a moment and wasn’t paying attention!”
The other boy grabbed his hand and stood up. “If you wanted to introduce yourself to me, there would have been easier ways to do it!” He let out a humorously laugh and held out a hand, “I’m Sunoo. First year student. Seeing how awkward you are, you must be too!”
Jihoon gripped Sunoo’s hand with a smile of his own. “Jihoon. Also, first year student. Nice to meet you.” Jihoon instantly took a liking to him. Sunoo seemed like the kind of guy who was easy to get along with, the kind of guy who laughed a lot. He was probably the type to get elected as the class representative, just because he had a lot of friends to vote for him.
The two of them walked onto the school grounds together while rolling their bikes along. Sunoo chattered away telling Jihoon about himself. Jihoon noticed that the girl was gone. She had on his school’s uniform, meaning that she was a student at his school. He would have to run into her again at some point. After all, their school wasn’t that big with less than 500 students.
Their high school was located in the western part of the town. Although the school had previously done repair and maintenance work, the school itself was around 50 years old so chipped painting and cracks along the walls and flooring was nothing surprising. Their school was much like most other schools in Korea.
They had a large main building, where all of the home classrooms and teacher offices were located. There was a smaller, newer annex that contained the school’s cafeteria, snack shop as well as some additional classrooms. On the other side of the main building, was the gymnasium that also doubled as the auditorium. Both the annex and gymnasium connected to the main building with two bridges, one extended from the first floor and the other from the third floor.
The school’s grounds also contained a number of sports fields for their athletic clubs. There was a soccer field, tennis court, swimming pool and even a training hall for the school’s taekwondo club.
With a stroke of luck, Jihoon discovered that he and Sunoo were in the same class. What a relief. At least he had one new friend. It seemed like Sunoo already knew a large number of students in their new school, though. While walking together, Sunoo seemed to greet almost every student including the second and third year students. He explained to Jihoon that he knew most of them from his elementary and middle school, some he knew from playing soccer.
“Jihoon!” a voice called from behind. Jihoon turned and saw that it was Sanghyuk, his closest friend from middle school. Jihoon had met Sanghyuk in his first year of middle school. They had been in the same class for all three years and had developed a strong friendship. They were the only two guys to attend this high school from their group of friends.
“Oh, Sanghyuk!” Jihoon yelled back cheerfully. The two high fived. “I was wondering when I would see you!” Jihoon nodded his head towards his new friend. “This is Sunoo by the way. I ran into him on the way to school.” Literally. He was just glad that Sunoo was the type of guy who brushed things off easily. If he had run into an older student, he shuddered at the thought of what might have happened.

“Nice to meet you! Sanghyuk, eh? Let’s be friends!” Sunoo introduced himself to Sanghyuk enthusiastically.
They learned that Sanghyuk was also in their class. The three of them made their way up the stairs. First year students had the unfortunate luck of being all the way up on the fifth floor. Sanghyuk and Sunoo were talking excitedly amongst themselves while Jihoon was trying to take in the atmosphere of their new school.
He could see the second and third year students joking around, greeting each other eagerly after the long winter break. Some of the third year students complained about the KSAT that would take place near the end of the year. The first year students, on the other hand, were more reserved and shyer as many of them did not know each other. Most of them were walking alone.
They entered through the classroom’s back door, which was already opened. Although most of the students had arrived, the atmosphere was quiet. Right away, he noticed several cliques had already formed. But even as the cliques talked amongst themselves, their voices were low as the students were still not yet on friendly terms, trying to get to know each other.
There she was. She sat by the window quietly reading a book.
“Minhee!” a voice called from near the front door. A small girl with bangs skipped towards her.
“Ari! There you are,” Minhee put her book down and began a conversation with Ari who sat down at the desk in front of Minhee.
“Jihoon, did you hear me?” Sunoo asked suddenly.
“Huh?” Jihoon responded puzzledly. If Sunoo had said something to him, he hadn’t noticed.
Just then Minhee turned her head at the sound of their voices and Jihoon saw her face properly for the first time.
