*Bad Case of Loving You by Robert Palmer.

"Poor girl, she did everything right but...years of so much pressure being the highest ranking witch that all witches and wizards looked up to...seemed too much for her."

Michael concluded, already knowing the fact, "She, unfortunately, killed herself."

"Hmmm," sighed Mrs. Evens, "Yes. Very unfortunate. Anyway, getting off track. Hazel had three kids. Me, a son, and another daughter. Then, my sister got pregnant and delivered Thomas." The witch shook her head with chewed lips, "I spoiled Thomas. Loved him so much. My sister and he would come every Sunday night to have dinner with me. He especially loved my blueberry pie. I made it every birthday for him." Mrs. Evens sighed, "If Hazel didn't kill herself, I think Thomas would've been much different than what he is today."

Michael leaned in his seat, caught off guard, wrapping his fingers around the warmth of the cup. He glanced at his empty plate with some crust left, and looked back at the woman, "What do you mean?"

"Hazel and my sister were close friends. When Hazel died, my sister blamed the heroes because they were so negative to her mom. And they were, always wanting Hazel to side with them, mocking to kill her family if she didn't. But, that wasn't the reason she killed herself." Mrs. Evens sighed with many wary eyes, "So ridiculous why she did that." The witch scoffed and took a swallow of her tea, "Hazel found out her husband had cheated on her with a hero. Made her quite cross if you tell me. She was enraged and killed her husband and the hero. Now, Hazel you see, she had never killed any hero or villain before, and with the heroes not knowing what happened, thought her as a villain and...some of your heroes, Michael, had killed off my sister and my brother afterward."

Michael lowered his head, remembering that whole disastrous, "I would have never allowed that. I knew my heroes were threatening Hazel with that. I told them to stop. There is no excuse for that behavior. I apologize for that."

Mrs. Evens, "Not your fault, honey." but a frown came on her sweet face, "Anyway. Thomas was left alone and saw the heroes as the bad guys, killing off his mother and his uncle. Poor boy. I know what he has been through."

Michael asked him gently as he could, "How did you survive then?" If his heroes had made threats and then decide to live on their threats, they wouldn't go a dear Miss. Evens.

Mrs. Evens smacked her lips, shaking her head ever so slowly, not looking directly into Michael's eyes. Her voice cracked, "Thomas was with me, trying to learn my blueberry pie. I got a call from a friend of mine that I needed to retreat." The witch raised her head, a nasty gash wound on her neck. "Right after I got the call, heroes were bursting inside my house..." her voice trailed off as Mrs. Evens remembered the memory. She cleared her throat and took another swallow.

Michael was feeling a horrible guilt pass inside him. He had known the pieces of the details, but hearing it from someone who had to go through what his heroes had done, made his emotions roar furiously. He was now starting to understand why Pitch hated the heroes.

Mrs. Evens continued, "A hero came behind me and attacked me. Thomas had heard my scream and came. Blood was..." she closed her eyes and her lips trembled, "Everywhere. They were attacking Thomas and he was so scared. I have never seen a fearful expression on that boy before. He was a strong, fearless little boy. That's why I love him so much."

Michael said, "You don't have to tell me any of this. I shouldn't be allowed. My heroes...I had my angels deal with them."

"I know," Mrs. Evens said hoarsely, "You expelled them from your headquarters."

Michael muttered, "I know that isn't enough to console the grieving."

"It isn't," Mrs. Evens declared, "But it is what it is. Again, wasn't your fault." The witch breathed out and said, "I used my magic to have the heroes bay away and Thomas came to my side. He hadn't unlocked his potential and didn't know how to heal me, or barely use his powers. My sister was always so afraid to have his magic known to the world. She didn't want him to be like Hazel and be forced to become the most powerful warlock. But...the look on his face when the heroes had slit my throat, something clicked inside of him and every hero that in that room, had turned into ashes when he screamed and cried." Mrs. Evens scoffed at the amazement of what her nephew did, "Thomas was something else that day. You may ask how my sister knew that Thomas was some powerful genius, was by his eyes. I never saw his eyes glow, but when he used his powers to defend your heroes, they were glowing brightly. Thomas called nine-one-one and told them that there had been an attack. Even though we don't interfere with the humans, I was still badly hurt. Thomas had stopped the bleeding but didn't heal me. When the ambulance came, he swore he would become a doctor so he can heal anyone. Such an act of courage that boy had."

Michael gave a discouraged look, but he didn't think Thomas was courage able man. Two wrongs don't make a right.

"After that incident happened, and he figured out his mother was killed, I barely knew the boy I raised. His personality turned completely different and he one day snapped at me when I told him that this family didn't pick sides and he wanted to be a villain. I didn't want that for my poor boy, but there was nothing I could do. He didn't have a mother anymore to knock some sense into him and I was still shocked. Three days had passed and Hazel had enough. She was so damn depressed. Thomas was living with me to make sure I was safe even though he was so young. Just only eleven and maturing so fast it made my head spin! Hazel had asked me that third night for us to come over and seemed urgent. So, we came over the next morning, and she had turned to Thomas, telling him that he had amazing powers and was extremely gifted."

Mrs. Evens sniffed and grabbed a tissue, dabbing at her eyes, "The next morning, she had killed herself. I don't want to go into the details, but it was horrible. Thomas blamed himself and I don't know why. He was so mad and..." Her voice broke and she gave off a sad stare. Mrs. Evens blinked to Michael, who was sitting still, listening intensely, "I decided it would be best if Thomas and I moved away from of the neighborhood that felt like cursed grounds. When we quickly moved, in less than a week, I was making breakfast. I was crying. When Thomas appeared to me, he was at least fifteen years old and I dropped the plates I was about to set. He was so handsome but...there was that look. That evil, sinister look made my skin crawl. I laughed at him and told him to stop whatever he was planning. Thomas told me that he would think about it and helped me clean the dishes and ate with me. Each day he grew at least five years older. It was his powers overwhelming him at once, and he wanted to be older so he could go to medical school and help people...but I didn't want him to. The look on his face was so awful."

Michael was looking at Pitch from a new angle. He asked, "Pitch wanted to go to medical school because he wanted to help people, and you were hurt, that motivated him?" That didn't make sense if he wanted to become a villain.

Mrs. Evens nodded, pouring herself some more tea. "You won't believe what happens to a child that's been through that and his powers awakening up after such a trauma, his head must've been spinning in such confusion about himself and life. He wanted to understand the basics of humans. He had always been fascinated by them. My sister and I were always fine with that. In another week off after that mess, he was a grown man, at least looking twenty-three, and had read so many books about being a doctor and med school. Thomas was still a child inside, and then another week after, he was packing his bags, kissing me goodbye before I could catch my breath. He was going off to med school, not even school, college, or anything. I didn't realize how powerful that boy was. He was at least as powerful as Hazel, not even more. And he knew it. My nephew used that power to tap into his brain to think and act like an adult, but there were many immature things that he did."

Mrs. Evens let herself catch her breath as she put up the pie back in the oven and settled herself back down. She folded her hands neatly on her dress, "I barely saw Thomas throughout his meds school years and as an immortal, those years pass fast. He came to my house some holidays and my, he was such a man and gentlemen. Those years in med school, and then when he became a licensed doctor, I was so proud and I thought he was past what happened. I was so pleased when everything was going smoothly."
