Seeing the original form of the catling, Dawn couldn’t help but sigh in his heart while Boink had a scare by nearly puffing up his fur.
With a jump, the black kitty cat nimbly lands on the stool on where she was sitting just now and stretched out her paw to stroke the head. Of course, in Dawn’s view this was super adorable, thus causing him to want to reach out and scratch that fur. But everyone knows that’s just rude, which Shadow promptly rejected with a swipe of her paw at that naughty hand.
…Emmm
“Satisfied now, right?” Shadow said softly, “If it weren’t for you really needing help, Landlord, I wouldn’t have bothered to take this form.”
How to say it, Dawn vaguely tasted a trace of disgust in the lady’s voice. But without question, he’s indeed delighted. As the old saying goes, black cats are good for warding off evil spirits and attracting wealth. Whether it’s true or not, who’s to judge? He’s already housing a catling and a hamsterling in his home so there’s nothing to lose anymore.
“Hmmm… Do you want me to lay a nest for you?” He asked curiously.
“Hurry it up. I don’t want to sleep on the floor tonight.” Shadow said so with a bit of sarcasm, “Make it softer. If it’s too hard my hair will fall off.”
“Ho…. picky aren’t you.” Boink disdainfully muttered.
The catling’s ears flicked as she turned to glare at Boink’s face. Immediately, the hamster’s arrogance extinguished before it could even rise.
“I’ll bother you two tonight then.” Dawn got out of bed and thanked the two sincerely.
Making a temporary nest for the cat lady was easy. Cleaning out a bookshelf drawer and then stuffing a cotton jacket in there was all he needed to do. This got an instant thumbs up from the lady herself after she nestled into the box by pawing it down.
That’s some low standards she got going….
With these two layers of protection ready, Dawn felt relieved and nestled himself into the bed for the night. Then he promptly flicked the lamp off to sleep.
Next day….

Dawn suddenly got awoken by the gonging and drumming from the outside. And likewise, Shadow was also disturbed by the noise after spending the whole night watching him. Scratching her dreary eyes, she first stretched her limbs in the front before doing the hind. All the while, Dawn was eyeing those meaty pads she kept showing because he had an instinctive urge to tickle them.
“I say… is this some holiday or something? Why is there so much noise outside?” Shadow jumped up to the bed blanket and asked while staring into the guy’s face.
Dawn first froze by how close they were but then sighed at how silly he was acting: “Today is not a festival. It’s a funeral send-off.”
He got up and opened the window drape to reveal the scene outside on the street. There were rows of cars aligned with white wreaths hanging on the front.
“Landlord, do you know how long the deceased has been dead?” Shadow crouched on the windowsill and asked after watching for a moment.
“It’s only been three days. They died without indication. Oh right, there was a homicide in the market near us two days ago as well. It’s so unlucky lately.” Dawn first sighed until he noticed something, “Wait, why are you asking me about this?”
“Strange, the dead have no soul. Reasonably saying, the soul wouldn’t leave the body so quickly and would require a short period before it dissipates.”
Shadow puts on a grim face, her pupils emitting a cold dark glint like she’s contemplating an idea, “There’s this nagging feeling in me that none of this is normal.”
When Dawn heard this, his eyes widened in surprise: “Not normal?”
Shadow shook her head slightly, “I don’t know the exact detail, but it’s just off for me.”
Dawn was about to ask again when Boink’s hamsterly voice interrupted from behind. “It is necromancy. That female ghost from two days ago is the spell carrier.
“You know?” Shadow asks with a doubtful face.
Dawn was also very curious and didn’t quite believe it because Boink didn’t give him the impression of being all that reliable up to this point.
Boink patted his furry chest and said, “I’m an expert in the spiritual field, okay? Combined with the strong reflection of resentment in that female ghost, I can be sure someone’s controlling this from the shadows. I hope the monster hunters will work harder and catch them soon…”
