Chapter 50: The shiny purple eyes

As soon as she reached the ground, Himeko felt Herrscher Mei's sharp gaze. Her cold and indifferent purple eyes indeed represent a Herrscher, an Apostle of Calamity, but right now, she was silently standing beside Kiana as if protecting her.

Himeko find it difficult to associate her to a Herrscher.

Himeko is a little afraid that she would anger Herrscher Mei and cause Kiana, who is nearby, to be injured, so she chose to approach Kouro who was currently standing in the middle of a wreckage of Mecha Titans that he had destroyed.

After approaching Kouro, Himeko noticed that his current expression is that of annoyance mixed with sadness while muttering things like, 'robots have no soul', 'unable to level up', and so on.

"You…" Just when she was about to ask, Kouro suddenly turned his head to her direction.

Kouro's purple eyes, that are glowing brightly like that off Herrscher Mei, caused Himeko's word to become stuck in her throat.

But it returned to normal after Kouro blinked his eyes.

"Etto… Himeko-san? Is there something wrong?" Kouro asked cautiously.

Himeko initially wanted to ask why he, who was just an ordinary high school student, has such extraordinary strength, but stopped because the look in Kouro's eyes earlier gave out an extremely terrifying aura.

The dumbfounded Himeko shook her head to get rid of the thought and looked at Kouro's purple eyes again, but when she looked again, there was no longer a scary aura radiating from within. 'Was it just an illusion?' she doubted herself.

Himeko then remembered her objective, so after helping Kouro clean up the rest of the remaining Zombies together, she glanced at Herrscher Mei from a distance and asked Kouro is a low voice.

"Why exactly happened to the Herrscher over there? And why is Kiana unconscious next to her?"

"Kiana fainted earlier because she got too close and was affected by Mei's aura when she transformed into a Herrscher. Mei is the person you call the 3rd Herrscher. She is my friend." Kouro explained slowly and clearly while remaining calm.

"Friend? That is not your friend anymore, that is the 3rd Herrscher and a Herrscher is-" Himeko tried to warn him.

But Kouro cut off her words and replied, continuing her sentence, "Is the apostle of Honkai and a calamity that will destroy the world. Is that what you want to say?" he stared at Himeko before continuing.

"Mei now has two personas inside of her. One is her real self. Her self who lived and grew up in the neighborhood where her mother died when she was a child, her self that was kidnapped by bad people (a certain group who wanted to use Mei as a hostage so that her father Raiden Ryoma according to their request).

"Her self who has a father who is now in prison which prompt her classmates and teachers to ostracize her, yet still maintains a kind nature that always treat others with gentleness."

"And her other self is that Herrscher, but that persona inherited her memories and most of her original emotions, so please don't take her for a world-ending calamity."

Himeko started at Kouro after he uttered those words to her with a serious expression and a frown gradually made its way on her forehead.

"You… Do you want us to ignore this Herrscher? You want to protect her?"

Kouro squinted his eyes and stared at Himeko, his eyes gaining a purple glow, and replied with a deep voice, "Yes, I will protect her."

He began warning Himeko, asking her to stay away from him while pointing his sword at her warily.

Himeko, as a Valkyrie, knew very well about the disasters the Honkai has brought into this world, let alone a Herrscher.

Although she had no personal experience on dealing with Herrschers, she had been told about the horrors a Herrscher could bring from various materials and countless lessons.

Their goal is to destroy the human civilization, they are the Honkai's most powerful weapon. The 2nd Herrscher was the best example of this after her rampage that lay waste around the world.

And now, Kouro actually want to protect s Herrscher? 

"Do you understand what you're saying?" Himeko laughed in suppressed anger.

"I know. I understand it very well. Besides, it seems like I was too polite about my words earlier. I'm not discussing with you right now. I'm asking you, Himeko-san."

Himeko smiled, but the tick mark on her forehead says otherwise about her current emotions because of Kouro's request.

 

Kouro turned and faced the road in front of him.

If those Honkai Beasts and Zombies didn't disappear after being killed, the road would have been filled with countless corpses.

Even now, there are still a lot of wreckage from the Mecha Titans around.

The road itself as well, the asphalt in it already looked shapeless as if it had been plowed a thousand times.

Some of the surrounding buildings have also collapsed or shattered into fragments creating an apocalypse-like eerie atmosphere everywhere, making the city look like a dead city.

"Himeko-san, what role do you think you are playing right now?"

"…What?"

"A character who came late after a large-scale Honkai Eruption took place, and then took an attitude as if you had contributed greatly, but obviously you didn't do much before, right? Or do you think that the dozen or so Zombies you've eliminated is considered a great achievement?"

They went there with determination, knowing full well that death awaits them just to delay the Honkai Beast from entering inside the city. "Such is the Honkai. You seem to want to associate it Mei turning into a Herrscher, but keep in mind that a Honkai Eruption occurs after the Honkai gives birth to a Herrscher, not the Honkai Eruption creating a Herrscher."

There a still a few things that Kouro keeps a secret, such as when Mei who had previously been turned into a Herrscher, but the results will still end the same.

Even considering the secret, Mei couldn't be blamed as a perpetrator, but rather, she was a victim.

Himeko wanted to refute Kouro's words, but her emotions stopped her. Even she didn't know how to deny that at all, so she could only helplessly say.

"You really made me speechless, Kouro. It's just a shame that I'm not the one in-charge. Let me call St. Freya Academy, an organization that deals with Honkai in the Far East region. The principal – Theresa, you should have met her earlier, if you want to vie for her(Mei) safety, talk to her."
