Chapter 31: Wedding preparations

Ossilo and Simone worked like creatures possessed. It was Tuesday, and they had managed to get the sketches for the wedding pants-suits yesterday. Now, they were actually sewing them. Ossilo would wear a white robe. Pure white, this time. Not ivory, as he usually did.

His tail simply didn't allow for anything else. Ossilo was making Orion's pants, white, with blue patterns, and Simone was making the silk shirt. Ossilo had wanted the pants to be made of wool, and so they were. As he stitched the blue patterns, leaves, mostly, he would dip his fingers into the bowl with fairy dust every so often.

Orion was tired just watching them. He tapped Ethinir on the shoulders, and offered his elbow to him. The elf hooked an arm around it, and they walked in the direction of the village.

A gaggle of fairies came with them. With bottomless pouches, for they were too small for bottomless bags, around their hips. Lord Erion had told the vampire that his people could come into the village now, that the permission was given. But the fairies wanted Orion there for extra protection.

The small girls, and a couple of boys, sang all the way to the village. Their childish voices a pleasant tickle on both Orion and Ethinir's ears.

"Do you have something planned for today?" Ethinir asked.

"Not at all. I just wanted to walk around. I mean, I fed the chickens, I gave them water, and if I spent the entire day staring at Ossilo and Simone making the wedding clothes, I think I will be dizzy," Orion told him, and Ethinir hummed.

"Yes, they are quite fast. But did you see the patterns that Ossilo is stitching into your pants?" Ethinir gushed, and Orion smiled.

"Yes, lovely. He is going to doll us up, or I'll eat my hat," the vampire murmured, and Ethinir giggled.

"I have never seen you with a hat, Orion," Orion pulled out a straw hat from his bottomless bag, and put it on. He wiggled his brows at Ethinir and pulled out one for him as well.

Ethinir took the hat, and placed it on his head. The two hats had matching red ribbons. They looked old, and ended in a bow.

"Now, we match," Ethinir said, and Orion hummed.

They made it to the gates, and Samuel rose a cup at their sight.

"Hey, love birds. Finally, getting hitched? Where is master Ossilo?" Samuel asked. Orion sniffed in his general direction. "Don't worry, this is just lemonade. I don't drink during my shift."

"Does the entire village know?" Orion asked, and Samuel nodded enthusiastically.

"Everyone and their dogs," Samuel then smiled wider. "We had precious little to celebrate these past couple of months. Your wedding is the perfect excuse for us all to party."

"I am glad to hear that," Orion said, and then looked to Ethinir. "I bet Beth is going to invite the entire village."

"Oh, Beth is inviting people from as far as Lute village," Samuel told him, as he took a sip from his drink. "She doesn't have children, so she likes to plan other people's weddings."

"She doesn't have children?" Ethinir asked. He knew that humans liked to have children, unlike some forest dwellers who simply lived alone.

"Yes, unable to have them, poor woman. Her husband passed away ten years ago. A heat stroke, out in the fields. She has barely been making ends meet, these past few years," Samuel told them with a downcast expression. Orion furrowed his brows.

Beth had not looked poor, when she had offered to arrange his wedding. Yet, maybe it was because she had kept her clothes in good condition? Now that he thought about it, they did look old.

"I'll see if I can't help the women and her, that are in this situation," Orion said, already making plans.

"Master Orion, you are a godsend. All those nasty rumors about you, from before, must be unfounded. As if you could ever steal from merchants, or have witches curse random hunters," Samuel took a sip from his lemonade again.

"I... did all that, in the past," Orion admitted. Then he sighed. "Normally, I left the villagers be, but when they came in the forest with their pitchforks and torches, I had to protect my people."

Samuel blinked at him, as if seeing Orion for the first time.

"You... what made you change?" Samuel asked, and Orion pulled out his book. He showed the cover to Samuel. "How To Be A Peaceful Vampire?"

"Yes, ironically enough, I found it on a dead vampire. He didn't seem to have read it very carefully. I improved in leaps and bounds since getting this book. I dare say it changed my life," Orion told Samuel, as he pocketed the book again.

"Is it a magic book?" The guard asked, curious.

"Yes, with a system," Orion confirmed, and then leveled Samuel with a stern look. "Don't tell anyone, ok? If I do anything violent, then the book will give me the failure badge, and force me into an early grave."

"Your secret is safe with me," Samuel made a locking sign on his lips, and looked down at his hands. "Was it bad, before you made the effort to reach out to us?"

"I am to blame as well, for what happened in the past, I mean," Orion spoke, head bowed. "But I want to fix my mistakes now. I do hope Drumm village gives me the chance."

"Oh, we will," Samuel said, and then poured a glass of lemonade and handed it to Ethinir. "My shift ends in an hour. I can show you some of the village's hidden treasure sights, if you wait here for the end of it?"

"We were going to wander aimlessly," Ethinir admitted. "But your plan sounds better."

"Then, it is decided. You will remain with me until tonight. We like to make bonfires when the sun sets, and roast our meat out in the open. You are welcome to grab a bite to eat with us, and take something back for master Ossilo, master Ethinir," Samuel suggested, and Ethinir looked at Orion.

"Can we stay?" He asked, hopeful.

"We will still need to come home, so Ossilo won't worry. But I think he is so obsessed with the wedding clothes, he won't notice that we are missing until it is time for bed," Orion agreed, and leaned on the walls of the village, as Samuel pulled out a deck of cards.
