Lexi was asleep when the eyes opened. The pink glimmer swayed at first, checking to be sure Lexi was absolutely asleep and her family members were either asleep or too absorbed in the TV to notice anything unusual.

Scarlet pushed herself upright all the way and sniffed.

Lexi had showered since she came home so there was no longer a smell she could track but she did her best to remember exactly what smell it was and slipped out of the house. It was a full moon tonight so even in the dense woods the silver light reached in long tendrils to the ground. It provided a surprising amount of light to those not used to the dark night.

She traveled very far, farther than she had in a very long time. She smelled all the way, picking out smells with far more discretion than usual. It was normally mainly by species but tonight she wanted a certain member of the species.

Yes, Lexi’s blood could pacify her but she’d be lying if she said feasting wasn’t an amazing feeling. Getting bloated on human blood was a rare treat, one she would rather like to enjoy tonight. She didn’t want to hurt Lexi to get there, either.

But she also wouldn’t claim a random victim. She smelled, following the smell. Elias’s intermingled in places with it, but she wasn’t pursuing Elias.

She walked through the woods, crossed several roads and finally got into the downtown region.

The boy was taking out the trash, bringing his scent to her with a mix of old chicken bones and fry oil. She growled lowly. The fluid welled over her fangs, giving that bitter pre-kill taste that only made her want to sink her teeth into his neck more. Replace the bad taste with a better one. A bloodier one.

She turned, and made a mental note of where to flee when she was done here. There were more people in the area. More witnesses, she’d have to be quick.

The boy turned to go back inside, preparing to walk up the long sidewalk to his front door. There were no lights so they’d be covered by the dark, other than the moon.

Scarlet hesitated. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea. It had been made apparent people had gotten much faster with carrying messages, and the weapons they had looked scarier too. Something about how much more compact and streamlined they were sent an uneasy shudder through her.

At the same time, she had to hunt. She had to feed when she had the opportunity, and she didn’t like this boy. Maybe he was just working through some of his own issues, but Lexi didn’t deserve that. And Lexi was the most important thing right now.

She started to move but stopped. Would Lexi be happy about this? She’d know, for sure, if the boy died. She knew Scarlet did these things and accepted her anyway.

She heard the boy’s voice and crouched lower in the foliage. More of the vampire fluid dripped down her teeth, making her salivate.

It was now or never. She chose now and darted forward.

The boy looked up at the sound of movement as Scarlet slid behind the trashcan he’d just pulled down to the curb.

This was her chance. He was confused. He didn’t know where she was. As soon as his back turned she made the leap, bounding off the sidewalk with an athleticism she didn't always get to enjoy. And she came down on his shoulders.

He yelled as he went down and hit the ground with a satisfying crack of a bone.

Scarlet controlled the urge to rip and tear and to maim. She wanted him to know.

“I hate you,” she hissed. “The world hates you because you're a worthless piece of filth.”

“Get off me,” he yelled and struggled to throw her off. He managed to free an arm from underneath him but her weight pressed down and he was no good at wrestling.

She opened her mouth, let the fluid drip down her teeth some more, let it saturate her saliva and bit down. She was far more aggressive than usual. Yes, living prey was easier to feed off of, but she wanted this boy to feel pain so she bit in the shoulder. Less bleeding, a slower death and more pain.

He struggled, her teeth pulling and tearing at skin and muscle. He cried out all the way. She knew how bad it hurt to get bitten like this, even if the drool numbed the injury.

And then the door opened. She pulled away to listen, hearing somebody there, somebody she couldn’t quite make out. Her mind was blinded by the bloodlust but it faded as she saw the silhouettes come into view.

She growled. Blood hung from her mouth in long strands of drool. She wanted to keep going. Her teeth wanted to bite and release all of that pent up venom.

But she pulled away as one of the silhouettes came at her with something stick-like and swung it. It whistled through the air and clanged very loudly against the ground.

She knew better, even through the distorted state of mind. She backed off. She didn’t want to. Another whistle of metal came crashing down a few inches from her as she leaped back.

There was no weapon for her to use as defense.

Another dodge and a step back later, she turned and fled. She fled into the woods, up the hill. There was noise behind her for a while and then nothing.

She stopped in the asylum's clearing and listened. Not even the insects chirped. And then the wail of those metal polizei carriages started to follow up from down there.

She retreated the rest of the way inside, avoiding the door and hefting her weight up and over one of the windows and cowered.

They came and searched the premises, but she had stayed here for far longer than they had. She crawled into the ceiling and squeezed into a back corner most humans wouldn’t fit into and stayed absolutely still.

She heard them walk back and forth beneath her many times. Every time she thought maybe they’d given up she heard them, or their distorted voices from those soundboxes, walk beneath her.

This was terrible.

She needed to get out of here. She needed to get to Lexi. At best, Lexi would worry, but at worst Lexi would be questioned for this.

She should’ve been fast about it. She should’ve sank her teeth into that boy's neck, deep into the life-veins there.

But it was too late now. He had witnessed her. The hunters would come and they'd know how to find her.

It was only a matter of time.
