Adam looked up at the gloomy skies, hiding in the remains of a destroyed building to avoid being detected by drones. He normally wouldn't care about them but if some stronger enemy were nearby, he'd definitely die terribly if the drone alerted them.
"I don't get why I time traveled to the future only to end up in this f*cked up world... Did I commit some inhumane sin in my previous life then to deserve this?"
He had originally been no one of importance on Earth and he didn't expect that his situation could be any worse, as being hunted by enemies to death wasn't something he had to deal with on Earth.
There were a few survivor camps he had heard of from fellow survivors while navigating this new world, but he also heard the leaders lived like tyrants and kings, using their authority to abuse those under them, so Adam decided to remain a loner.
It also helped that the enemy was intelligent, highly so, and people gathering in one place was just asking for death, but not everyone saw it the way Adam saw it.
Just as he was lost in his thoughts, a low humming sounded and he immediately ducked down, tapping his wrist watch to activate the cloaking effect to mask his body heat.
Slowly lifting his head, he saw a drone flying above, not being supported by propellers that he was familiar with in his original time but by an anti-gravity engine which allowed it to fly with nearly no noise and had enough power to be in use constantly.
Having time traveled one thousand two hundred years into the future, he had to admit that the technological leap was amazing, with everything being so much more advanced he'd find it hard to get used to if he didn't merge with the previous host's memories.
Not only were there power suits and laser rifles that could melt holes in titanium, there were also automatons and Artifical Intelligences that went rogue, killing off half the population and taking over the world, leaving the remaining humans in despair.
The drone hovered above the building and for a moment, Adam thought he was dead, but then the drone turned and flew off at a speed he could barely track and then cold sweat dripped down his back when he came to a realization.
Unlike humanity who had become stagnant, the machines kept improving and building, and the drone he saw wasn't an older model, but a new one that came with a few weapons and speed he couldn't hope to match.
If he engaged it, the only outcome he'd get was death, perhaps a swift one. Letting out a breath, Adam got to his feet, unholstering his energy pistol and keeping his head down as he moved through the ruins of the ravaged city.
Unlike what most people from his time thought, there was never another World War, as humanity had decided to join together to advance faster, even though it ultimately led to their downfall.
Unlike humans, even the weakest of the automatons due to their inability to feel compassion or remorse no matter who they cut down whether they be women or children could easily overpower the average human.

Peeking over the remains of a car, Adam saw a marking on the wall, positioned in a way a drone wouldn't see if they flew overhead. Adam let out a sigh, relieved he found this place before he ran out of food.
Moving quickly, he quickly walked into a ruined alleyway and lifted a plank of wood, revealing a dark passage leading downwards. From the memories he acquired upon arrival, he knew places like these traded food for useful things found outside and were called Dens.
After a minute of walking, he came to a wall and knocked lightly. He heard a sound and the 'wall' swung open, revealing several dirty looking men in military uniforms aiming their weapons at him.
"Who are you? Why are you here?" A man asked, his face hidden behind a pair of goggles, something humans now used to tell automatons and humans apart, as for how, Adam wasn't aware.
"I came to trade. Food for what I found." Adam spoke calmly, and one of the men held out a hand, so he handed over his energy pistol. The men stepped aside and allowed Adam to enter.
"You have ten minutes. Any longer and we'll melt your brain." The man who took Adam's gun smiled maliciously when Adam turned away, tossing the energy pistol on a nearby table since it wasn't anything uncommon.
Adam saw a few people moving about, but he paid them no mind and made a beeline to the counter with a man standing behind it. The man had gray hair despite not being old, using the technology of the future, changing superficial things such as color was easy.
"What do you have?" The man looked at Adam like he was a worm, but Adam didn't react and put his bag down, pulling a few devices from it. Just from the looks alone, the man could estimate that Adam had come across something good, and greed was ignited in his heart.
"From what you gave me, you can have six days worth of rations." The man smiled playfully, while Adam frowned. Adam didn't spend the last couple of days struggling just to get six days worth of food when what he put on the table was worth two weeks easily.
"I went out and found that. If you want to cut the price down, go buy from someone else." Adam reached out to retrieve his things when the man yelled out loudly.
"How dare you try to threaten me?! Guards get him!" Adam turned around and saw a guard aiming a pistol at him, he slowly turned his head and saw the greedy trader smiling smugly at him.
"Why would I threaten you unarmed? I'll take my stuff and go then." Adam ignored the guard and grabbed his bag. The trader saw an easy target and valuables flying away and gestured at the guard.
"Stop moving?" The pulse rifle in the guard's hand hummed to life, emitting a dim blue light. Seeing them so adamant about keeping him here, Adam realized they wanted to rob him.
