Chapter 1: The Day You’ve Been Waiting For (1)

As I walked forward, I could only shiver under the pressure. Stick to the plan, Lyn. You're in, then you're out. Don't do anything stupid. The one thing ringing through my head, other than my survival instinct going haywire, were those annoying sentences.

"You'd understand if you were in my position bastards..." I could only mutter to myself as I inched closer and reminisced.

"Hoh. another one with a unique skill. You'll surely go far in this world."

"Y-yes! Thank you, sir. I  won't disappoint this guild."

"Haha! I wouldn't even dream of it."

It was nothing but happy faces for year one. Of course, it would be. We had every advantage we needed to force back any monsters we faced. But.. something changed. More accurately, the biggest hurdle of my life revealed itself to me.

[Warning! The [Absorbtion] skill can only be used once, are you sure you would like to use it on the 'Goblin'?]

While my partners watched on to see what I could do, my face crumpled very quickly.

"..I can only use it once."

"What?"

"The skill. [Absorbtion]. I can only use it once."

"...well let's not waste it on the goblin right? haha"

"..Yeah, I'll find something cool."

I tried to play it off, but every moster I could think off didn't make the cut. The more I considered, the more their weaknesses became aparent, and higher my standards rose. Dread consumed every inch of hope that a had. Maybe if I could tame this.. no, what the hell is wrong with you. Pets were not an option. I could never look at myself the same way. M-maybe we'll leave that on the back burner.

The plan was to let the other two go ahead. I did a bit of research to find the strongest monster I could stand next to. A dragon could kill you in an instant, idiot. No, not the ogre, even with it's regen it can still be killed so you can too.  Don't even think about a damn slime. Like that, the world moved on. Trapping myself in my bubble, I had very little contact with the outside world, obsessing over my research. It wasn't healthy by any means but the journey was fun within itself.

"Earth to Lyn? You still there"

"Ah. Yeah is it my cue?"

"Well we know it's the biggest thing this system has thrown at us yet. So stand back"

'Not yet then..'

In the end, my wait bore fruit. Rumors of the 'strongest monster'. The [Calamity], as the system called it. My two partners, who had fallen down my rabbit hole. Sunny, a swordman who specializes in paralysis techniques and a walking golden retriver, and Ren, a magic bowswoman who had a talent in restricting her enemies accompanied by her firey tomboyish attitude. Together the two had a tactic of Ren creating a trap for her pray, Sunny immobilzing it, then the duo unleashing all they had to completely decimate their enemy. Like that they became prodigies in the hunter world. In an effort to protect me, or to keep my on a leash they surrounded me and constantly poked at my uselessness.

"You sure you're ready. You're shaking before the moster is even here."

"I'm just cold, yeah. Very cold."

"Haah, even the most basic hunters are resistant to the elements."

I'm worse than a basic hunter huh? Say it to my face! You did? Well then.. If anything, it was reassuring to know that I had nothing to do, and that the pair would do anything in their power to protect me. It's like they think I'm their son. However, being reminded of my abilities, I went to check my Status to avoid the atmosphere.

Not even this system has faith in me, but it's all about the last hit. Even if I had the minimum amout of stat points or the most basic constituiton there was one thing I was always proud of.

END: 10

I had the max endurance stat for a level one, and my vitality couldn't even be measured. At least that's what I hoped that meant. I scanned the horizon trying to find a suitible spot to hide away. Sunny watched with a stony face before commenting

"Are we sure we can protect him? At level once he can't even use artifacts."

"We have to. This might be his only chance. Just keep your focus on defense, we aren't the attack party here."

"Haah, just make sure he doesn't slip up and get caught. He'll be the center of attention when this is all over."

"Assuming we'll put an end to it already?"

"Yeah.. well we have to."

Corny. Cringe.

Taking refuge in the small hole that Ren dug, Sunny covered me with a rock and reminded me again " Stick to the plan, Lyn. You're in, then you're out-"

"Don't do anything stupid. I know. I got it." Truthfully, I could barely focus on his words. The anxiety of finally being on a real battle field was paralysing. You're not in danger, Lyn. Get it together. I steadied my breath. I couldn't get this ringing out of my ears, so I poked my head out to watch. They did say the exposure to large amount of mana will make a ringing noise but this... This wasn't normal. It shouldn't be this loud. My partners glanced back and forth between the crowd. Everyone sharing the same confusion and fear. 

Crouched in this hole in the dead soil that was our battlefield, I watched as a terrifying being descended. 

[The Calamity 'Husk Who Returns Home' Has Descended!]

This is it. My fate. My defining moment. Not that I had any battle experience, but if I had to point to an absolute existence, that calamity would be my first and only choice.

"A true monster.."

The [Absorbtion] skill had a range. As long as anyone got it on the ground, surely I could run up and use the skill. I had faith my partners could drag the battle in my direction so I put my head back down, sat, and waited.
