Chapter 21: Quest Rewards

“The mana levels have settled down,” Mr. Adam commented in front of the dungeon entrance. His face remained somber, wondering if his students were victorious or the dungeon got to them.

Jake was back in his military pants with his west and t-shirt whose sleeves waved with the wind. His free hands held a cigar as he calmed down his tense nerves. He remained silent as he wondered the same thing as his friend. He even thought if it was the right chance to let his friend’s students use this dungeon.

The black portal door at the entrance of the dungeon rippled. A big bleeding leg stepped out then the big man carrying two people appeared. As the exhausted man looked at Mr. Adam, a relieved smile formed on his bloody face.

“Sir-”

The man’s words were cut shot as the adrenaline rush faded, and he fell forward. But his body didn’t squish the lady he was holding his arms nor did the young man on his back fall down.

Jake supported him up while Mr. Adam took hold of Sumei under him. A sincere smile bloomed on his face as he said two words.

“Welcome back.”

Jacob opened up seeing a familiar white ceiling. He didn’t even know what to feel for a moment. Hadn’t he recently promised that he would get stronger and not get back to this place?

But as the feeling of déjà vu faded, an immense feeling of gratitude rose in him. His eyes turned wet as his nose felt stuffy. The feeling of safety and being alive was something he had always taken for granted. But today when he came back from the jaws of death, he finally realized its value.

‘Its priceless.’

Immense respect for the brave hunters who defended the land with their power rose in him. He knew not all were worthy of this respect. But he deeply respected those humans who risked their lives for weak people like him.

“Weak?” Jacob clenched his fists as he felt stronger than ever. His injuries were no longer bothering him. Before he could do anything, a serious of notifications flashed across his eyes.

[Congratulations! You have completed the Emergency Quest: Defeat the Boss of Four Deaths.]

[You have unlocked ‘Class Change’ and ‘Skill Creation Chance’.]

An innocent smile bloomed across his face. Before he could investigate further, the door to his room slammed open.

“Jacob!”

A quick figure rushed into his arms. Jacob looked at her head black hairs with streaks of red with a confused face.

‘Who is this?’

The girl raised her radiant face, and it was Jacob’s turn to be surprised.

“Sumei!?”

She smiled and turned her head to the sides making her hair fly around.

“What do you think? Cool right?”

Jacob smiled and nodded.

“What happened? Where’s Bob?”

“Oh… nothing much.” Sumei stammered while her eyes darted around. “Bob’s downstairs with Mr. Adam.”

Jacob noticed her hesitation and was confused.

‘What is she trying to hide?’

Before he could ask anything, Sumei caught his hand.

“Come down! They’re waiting for you.”

Jacob suppressed his questions. His looked at his patient grab with dislike and grabbed a pair of slippers from under his bed.

The delayed notification startled him. But Jacob suppressed his desire to check as he followed Sumei. They left the Trathe General Hospital under the questionings of the doctors. Every time a doctor tried to stop Sumei who was leaving with a patient, her answer remained the same.

“Mr. Adam is calling for him.”

They simply nodded and stopped bothering them.

‘How do these doctors know teacher?’

Jacob’s mind was filled with questions. But he knew he was going to get a chance to be clarified.

Outside in the parking lot lay a big jeep. It took a moment for Jacob to recognize the man in the driving seat.

“Bob?”

His voice made Bob turn around. The giant’s usually expressionless face had a gentle smile. “Jacob.” He nodded.

“Come on,” said Sumei and hopped in the front seat. Jacob nodded and sat in the back seat with even more questions.

‘Isn’t he like bigger? He was close to 2 meters back then and now he feels even taller. And what about those muscles? Where’s all that fat that used to giggle while he blocked the boss attacks?’

He asked the simplest question in his mind.

“How long was I hospitalized?”

“Two days,” Sumei replied while Bob focused on the road. Jacob was expecting something like two months or two years. He didn’t understand how they changed so much after such a short period of time. He also noticed they were driving on an unfamiliar road and were soon outside Trathe City.

“Where are we going?”

“To Mr. Adam,” Sumei replied again. She looked back at him and said, “You have no idea how much he has hidden from us all this time! You’ll be shocked just like us!”

Her excitement calmed him down and he closed his eyes to rest while looking at his system. He first summoned his stats.

‘So I got a quest, and I even completed it!?’ Jacob grinned. He looked at his ‘Quest’ notifications. He noticed that a quest was issued as an opponent who could easily kill him went after his life. His three rewards filled him with anticipation as he felt like a kid on Christmas that received three amazing presents.

‘I want to use my Class Change chance.’

Jacob used to play MMORPG games, so he clearly understood what his system meant. He also confirmed his hypothesis that level 10 was a threshold.

He smiled at the pain while feeling slightly embarrassed that even something that was not a human was praising him for his actions. But as he heard about the many ‘beings’ who were watching him battle, his spine tingled with a chill. The last line made him feel worse.

“N-no! Stop!” Jacob shouted with widened eyes.

Bob and Sumei’s eyes turned somber as they looked at each other. Sumei’s hand went to a small wand with a red gem embedded in its tip while Bob stopped the jeep in the middle of the road.

The surroundings were silent in the afternoon heat. Wild animals like camels walked the dry land surrounding the concrete road.

“What happened?” Sumei hid her wand as she looked back at Jacob. Her voice was no longer cheerful and even hid faint fear.

[You have successfully gained the chance to gain an uncommon class: Necromancer.]

Jacob ignored her words as his system’s words seemed to act like a death sentence on him. He lay there with unfocused eyes like a dead fish.

‘What about my dreams? All my strength? All those stats? You want me to look like a bony old man with sparse white hair commanding some undead? Skeletons? Zombies? Urgh.’

A tear drop went down from his left eye. It went unnoticed as he wiped it away quickly.

“Jacob!”

Sumei’s shouted attracted him. Her concerned and slightly angry face brought him back to his senses.

“Its fine.” Jacob waved his hand. He leaned back into his seat like a salted fish who had nothing left to live for.

Sumei and Bob looked at each other in concern. Bob stated the jeep once again, and they soon reached their destination. Sumei looked at the military fortifications surrounding them. She looked at the sleeping Jacob in the back seat with a worried face.

Mr. Adam come out of the base as the jeep parked in front of the building.

“How is he?”
