Competing With Her

Shen Man listened to class earnestly and took notes.

In addition to the scratching of pen on paper, she also heard whispers of two girls sitting behind her.

“Shao Qi didn’t come to class again, does anyone know where he went?”

“Without him, I don’t want to pay attention in class.”

“You don’t pay attention even when he is here.”

As soon as these words came out, the two girls laughed and fought around jokingly.

Shen Man glanced around the classroom and did not see Shao Qi.

Her eyes fell on Lin Shu.

Lin Shu was lying on the table, looking bored, and was crossing out words in her workbook with a pen.

She turned her head back as if noticing something, and immediately met eyes with Shen Man.

The two stared at each other for a few seconds.

Lin Shu sneered and turned her head away arrogantly.

Shen Man just chuckled softly.

The two girls behind her began to whisper again.

“There’s an election for a new class monitor this afternoon. Who are you gonna vote for?”

“I will definitely vote for Shao Qi.”

“Will he even participate though?”

“Ah.”

Shen Man listened with a slight frown. Tapping the tip of her pen on the table, she decided to participate in this election.

She used to be the class monitor back when she was in college.

Being a monitor can allow her to obtain info and get to know all the students in her class.

Although a little tiring, the pros outweigh the cons.

Shen Man chuckled.

Having dabbled in business for a long time, she now makes decisions rationally, instead of relying on ‘feelings’ like these simple students.

The lesson soon ended.

During recess, the most popular topic for conversations was about the election.

Tan Kai walked over to Shen Man’s desk and asked her with a smile, “Shen Man, do you want to be the class monitor?”

When Shen Man heard the words, she smiled and nodded.

“I’ll help you with the campaign.” Tan Kai said excitedly.

“Thank you, but I don’t want to bother you.” Shen Man politely refused.

Lin Shu looked at the two of them talking happily. She walked over, glared at Tan Kai and said angrily, “What are you doing here?”

“Shen Man is going to run for class monitor, so we have to help her.” Tan Kai replied with a smile.

Lin Shu rolled her eyes at him and held her head high. She looked at Shen Man provocatively, “I also want to run for class monitor!”

After speaking, she turned to Tan Kai, “You can only vote for me.”

Tan Kai looked helpless.

Shen Man smiled, “If Shushu runs for the election, I will also vote for you.”

“No need” Lin Shu said with a humph, pulling Tan Kai away.

*

The election is about to begin soon.

All the students came, including Shao Qi who usually skips class.

The head teacher stood on the podium facing the whole class and asked with a smile, “If you are participating in the election, please come up to introduce yourself.”

After that, everyone just looked at each other and no one actually went up.

The classroom fell silent.

Lin Shu gave Shen Man a look and volunteered to be the first to go up.

The head teacher laughed and stood aside to applaud, “Let’s welcome Lin Shu.”

There was warm applause from the audience.

Lin Shu gave her speech with a confident smile.

Shen Man sat below, resting her chin with one hand and watched on with a smile.

Lin Shu wore a red high waist long skirt and her long soft hair was freshly curled, making her small face look even more delicate.

The moist, soft red lips opened and closed, letting out a pleasant voice.

A trace of appreciation appeared in Shen Man’s eyes.

After Lin Shu finished speaking, she bowed towards the audience. When she straightened up, she looked at Shen Man and silently challenged her.

“Is there anyone else?” The head teacher asked with a smile.

Shen Man stood up and walked briskly towards the podium under everyone’s eyes.

Lin Shu laughed like she was going to watch a good show.

Shen Man stood firmly and began to speak.

She looked natural the whole time and even had a sweet smile.

Meanwhile the smile on Lin Shu’s face gradually disappeared, and her expression became ugly.

After Shen Man finished her speech, there was even more enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Lin Shu felt pressured and turned her head to tell Tan Kai, “Last time, I didn’t get voted as the School Flower, so this time I have to win.”

“Okay, okay, I support you.” Tan Kai hurriedly comforted.

Shen Man walked down and showed a standard smile when she passed by Lin Shu.

Lin Shu suddenly looked like a provoked cat with all the hair on her body standing up. She glared at Shen Man, unwilling to admit defeat.

After they gave their speeches, there was no one else who ran for class monitor.

So the class would have to vote between the two.

The students began to vote.

According to the rules, each student has one vote, which will be written on folded pieces of papers. They will all be gathered in one container and head teacher would be the one opening up the pieces of paper.

A classmate is assigned to tally the number of votes on the blackboard.

“Shen Man has one vote, Shen Man has two votes…”

“Lin Shu has one vote… Lin Shu has three votes…”

The blackboard was divided into two. Shen Man’s votes were recorded on the left, and Lin Shu’s were recorded on the right.

Shen Man smiled and looked indifferent, as if she didn’t care about the outcome.

Lin Shu’s face was tense, her fingers clasped together and her eyes glued to the blackboard.

Whenever her number of votes exceeds Shen Man, she would laugh happily, but if it’s lower than Shen Man’s, she would bite her lip angrily.

“Shen Man has twenty-two votes and Lin Shu also has twenty-two votes.” The head teacher announced on the podium.

Lin Shu wanted to laugh in victory at first, but after realizing it was a draw, she pressed the corners of her mouth back.

Shen Man was not surprised by this result, nor did she care.

“There are forty-five students in our class. If you did not vote, please stand up.”

No one responded.

A classmate muttered, “Shao Qi was sleeping and did not vote.”

Hearing this, the head teacher showed a helpless look and glanced at Tan Kai, “Tan Kai, can you ask Shao Qi to vote. We don’t need him to write anything, just saying the name is fine.”

Tan Kai frowned, not wanting to move.

The teachers in this school were all afraid of Shao Qi and their head teacher was no exception, so this matter had to be entrusted to him.

“Tan Kai, hurry up and call Shao Qi.” Lin Shu urged in a low voice, with nervous joy.

Tan Kai reluctantly got up and walked over to Shao Qi. He knocked on his table, “We are voting for class monitor between Lin Shu and Shen Man. Who do you choose?”

Shao Qi raised his head, revealing an icy expression. He randomly pointed, and then continued to sleep.

The direction he pointed at was exactly towards Shen Man.

Lin Shu stood up in surprise and demanded loudly, “Why is it Shen Man? Why is it always Shen Man?”

“Lin Shu, while it’s a pity the class monitor this time is Shen Man, don’t be discouraged. You can always continue to try next semester.” The head teacher smiled softly, trying to calm her down.

Lin Shu pursed her lips and sat down slowly unwillingly.

Shen Man frowned slightly.

Shao Qi’s carelessness aggravated the conflict between her and Lin Shu, causing their already bad relationship to become even worse.

This trend unexpectedly matches the plot of the original novel.

“Shen Man, please come up and say something to everyone.” The head teacher said with a smile, taking the lead in clapping.

Shen Man stood on the podium amidst the applause.

Lin Shu’s eyes were red and her hands were tightly clasped together. She was determined to not clap for Shen Man.

Shen Man said a few words and came back down.

The head teacher wrapped up the period with a few sentences, and the meeting officially ended.

There was no class in the afternoon, so the students went out one after another.

On the other hand, Shen Man sat still in her seat.

Lin Shu followed the crowd out. Before leaving, she gave Shen Man a stern look, her eyes full of stubbornness and unwillingness to admit defeat.

Shen Man laughed and finally got up to leave.

*

Shen Man returned to the Lin Family villa and knocked.

Aunt He came to open the door and asked with a smile, “Where’s Miss Lin? Why didn’t she come back with you?”

“I don’t know, I guess she went out to play today.” Shen Man replied.

“Will she be back for dinner?” Aunt He closed the door after her and asked.

“I’ll call and ask” Shen Man said.

“Okay, I’ll trouble you.” Aunt He said, looking embarrassed and fearful.

Shen Man sat in the living room and dialed Lin Shu’s number.

After a while, Lin Shu was connected, and said in a bad tone, “Why are you calling me?”

“Aunt He is preparing dinner, are you coming back to eat?” Shen Man asked.

“I’m not going back.” Lin Shu humphed.

Shen Man chuckled, comfortably leaning against the sofa, “Still angry about losing to me?”

“Who’s angry?” Lin Shu retorted.

Shen Man laughed again and lowered her voice, “I voted for you.”

Lin Shu was stunned, and it took a few seconds to find her voice again, “I didn’t ask for you to vote for me.”

In this way, even if Shao Qi voted her, she was still one vote behind Shen Man.

“Are you coming back for dinner tonight?” Shen Man repeated.

Lin Shu held her phone and didn’t reply.

Shen Man added, “Aunt He said that she made your favorite dishes.”

Lin Shu finally answered, “That’s my house, I’ll naturally go back. I can’t let you eat alone for free.”

The smile on Shen Man’s face deepened.

After hanging up, Shen Man walked to the kitchen and happily said, “Shushu is coming back for dinner.”

Aunt He immediately showed a look of admiration, “Manman, you’re so reliable. You can actually control Miss Lin.”

Shen Man just smiled, turned around, and went back to her room.

Shen Man adjusted the thermostat to a suitable temperature and changed into pajamas. Lying against the headboard of the bed, she played on her phone.

After playing for a while, her eyes felt a little sore, so she closed her eyes and slept.

Suddenly, the door was knocked hard and from the sound, she could tell it was Lin Shu.

Shen Man opened her eyes and got up to open the door.

“Hey, this is for you.” Lin Shu held a cup of milk tea in her hand.

Shen Man smiled and reached out to pick it up.

“Tan Kai bought it for you.” Lin Shu continued.

The smile on Shen Man’s face fell, and she stopped her movements.

Lin Shu frowned, “Why won’t you take it? Tan Kai bought it especially for you.”

“Please thank him for me, but I want to lose weight and can’t drink milk tea.” Shen Man said with a smile.

“If you don’t drink it, I’ll drink it.” Lin Shu said and looked at Shen Man strangely, before taking a sip. She said, “I think Tan Kai is a little interested in you. How about you go out with him, saving me the hassle of taking Shao Qi back.”

Hearing this, Shen Man sneered and instead of answering the question, she asked, “Is the milk tea delicious?”

“Of course it’s delicious.” Lin Shu raised her eyebrows in confusion.

Seeing the inexplicable smile on Shen Man’s face, her heart trembled.

Just as she was about to speak, a slender finger stroked her lips.

Lin Shu froze on the spot in shock.

The finger rubbed her lips and moved to Shen Man’s lips.

Shen Man licked her lips and smiled happily, “It’s quite sweet.”

“Cough cough…” Lin Shu choked and her little face flushed red. She quickly ran back to the room while still holding the milk tea.

Shen Man looked at the back of her fleeing figure in thought.

*

Lin Shu returned to her room.

The milk tea in her hand now seemed to be scalding hot, so she put it on the table and stopped drinking.

Her phone then rang.

Lin Shu saw that it was Tan Kai’s call, so she picked it up and asked, “I’m home, what do you want?”

“Did Shen Man drink that cup of milk tea? Does she like it?” Tan Kai asked nervously.

Lin Shu was startled and recalled how Shen Man rubbed her lips.

She blushed and said vaguely, “She didn’t drink it, I mean, yes… she did.”

“Did she drink it or not?” Tan Kai asked anxiously.

Lin Shu frowned and didn’t know how to answer. She pursed her lips and said, “I won’t run errands for you again in the future. If you want to send milk tea to someone, do it yourself.”

Hearing the unhappiness in her words, Tan Kai thought for a moment and asked, “Then, she doesn’t like it?”

“Go ask her, not me. Don’t be pressured, we’re all classmates and there’s nothing wrong giving each other a cup of milk tea.”

“Anyways, I won’t tell you. If you really want to know, go ask her yourself.” Lin Shu pouted her mouth and wiped it hard.

The cup of milk tea was abandoned.

Lin Shu was playing with her mobile phone when she heard a knock on the door.

“Shushu, time to have dinner.” Shen Man stood outside and called as she knocked.

“I know!” Lin Shu responded, with a hint of anger in her tone.

Shen Man smiled and went to the kitchen to help Aunt He set the dishes.

When the food came to the table, Lin Shu had already washed her hands and sat down.

Shen Man sat down and looked at the vegetables on the table, saying, “Shushu, eat more vegetables, I made them.”

Lin Shu wanted to refuse at first, but when she heard the latter sentence, she tentatively grabbed a piece with her chopstick.

The crisp taste stimulated her tastebuds and she couldn’t help showing a satisfied look on her face.

When Aunt He saw, she smiled and said, “Manman’s craftsmanship is better than mine. Whoever’s with Manman in the future would be blessed.”

“Aunt He, stop joking.” Shen Man chuckled and looked at Lin Shu.

Lin Shu couldn’t swallow the leafy greens in her mouth.

She chewed a few times, and forced it down with difficulty. After that, she never took another piece.

The atmosphere suddenly turned cold.

Aunt He didn’t know what she said wrong, so she smiled awkwardly, “You two eat slowly, I’ll clear the table after your finish.”

Lin Shu didn’t speak and just lowered her head to eat.

“Okay.” Shen Man replied.

The two of them finished dinner relatively silently, and then went back to their respective rooms.

After taking a bath, Shen Man laid comfortably on the bed and searched for a post on the Internet. She then sent it to Lin Shu.

Lin Shu opened it and saw that it was a post with everything you need to know about about Lesbians.

She swiped the screen gently and her eyes changed from the previous casual look to surprise. Finally, her little face blushed bright red.

Lin Shu seemed to have opened the door to a new world and her fingers trembled slightly as she typed, “Why are you sending this to me?”

“I like women, so don’t match me with other guys in the future. Also, you don’t have to worry about me robbing Shao Qi.” Shen Man said.

Lin Shu instantly beamed and sent a voice message to Shen Man, “That’s great! You said this yourself, so you can’t go back on your words. Stay away from Shao Qi in the future, and don’t take advantage of your status as the class monitor to approach him.

Shen Man pursed her lips and smirked, typing with one hand, “Ok, even though you can already rest assured, I won’t be attracted to any boy.”

Lin Shu sent her a smiley face.

Shen Man continued, “You can take a good look at that post, maybe it will be useful.”

“Thank you, but I don’t need it.” Lin Shu directly refused.

Shen Man stared at her reply, lightly tapping on the screen of the phone with her slender fingers.

Again and again, making a ‘tap tap’ sound.

She quietly watched the sky through the window getting darker.

A silver-white moon rose quietly, and it’s moonlight entered the room, falling on Shen Man’s cold face.

That pair of eyes had the coldness of an adult who experienced years of society.
