“'It’s unavoidable.’”
I frowned. It’s not as if I hadn’t been expecting this response, but actually hearing it really made it sink in. Of course, I’d resolved myself to see this through no matter the result, but knowing that I would actually have to wage war was still jarring.
Lucrezia, Priya, Antenora, and Aurelia all thought nothing of it, and neither did any of the chieftains, but that was to be expected. After all, there was no lost love between the eastern tribes and the western nations.
Even so, I had hoped that the sight of a united army composed of the entirety of the eastern tribes despite the lack of an actual Demon Lord would be terrifying enough for the western nations to simply surrender without any conflict.
Obviously, that was nothing more than a pipe dream. An idealized version of reality that I knew could never become real, yet in my heart, I still held on to whatever tiny sliver of hope that it could perhaps happen.
Foolish, I know.
“...That’s to be expected. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to fight. Working together voluntarily would’ve been the best option, and there’s also the issue of lives.” I sighed.
Antenora relayed my message, and I looked toward the sky as we waited for the reply. After Lucrezia and Antenora managed to patch things up, I was able to focus more on the whole situation of the army’s march toward the Fissure and the eventual obstacles that we would have to face.
At that time, I still hadn’t thought of any ideas when it came to keeping Liandra and Radeca updated on my status thus far. Hell, I didn’t even have any way of knowing whether they’d been captured or not.
In short, it was a major lack of foresight on my part. I’d given them a task that was practically monumental, but I had completely neglected the most important part of any organized movement: communication.
It truly was stupid, and honestly, anyone with any semblance of intelligence had the right to berate me for overlooking something that crucial.
After realizing my impossibly idiotic mistake, I had ended up dropping by each chieftain’s tent whenever the army stopped for a break in the hopes of acquiring a device like the thing that Cyrus had given us before we left Yasterton.
It had taken me a bit of time to remember what the name was, but the flugranz was a long-range communication and teleportation device that came in pairs. When two different people were holding a paired set, either one of them could send a small item to the other. This allowed for communication through letters or even items without having to deal with the nature of getting the object delivery normally.
Unfortunately, not only were the devices a one-time use type of deal, but they also required the other person to already be in possession of the other paired flugranz. It wasn’t as if any of that even mattered though since there wasn’t even any device like it in the camp.
The obvious thing to do was to find a mage who was capable of casting spells that could facilitate long-range communication.
That would’ve been the most convenient and simplest measure to solve my problem, and it would’ve been the solution that I’d have gone for if not for the fact that the eastern tribes valued strength above all else.
When it came to “strength” there were a lot of ways to define it. Magical strength, physical strength, mental strength, overall strength, and everything else in between. The list could go on forever.

However, in the eastern tribes, the “strength” that they valued the most was the power to smash through all your obstacles while relying on nothing more than yourself and whatever harsh training that you’d put yourself through.
In other words, physical strength was what garnered the most respect in the eastern tribes.
Even someone small like Priya or delicate like Aurelia was strong enough to be considered an experienced warrior when compared to the average soldier in the western nations.
This meant that people like Lucrezia and Aurelia who focused more on developing their magical prowess was rather rare in the eastern tribes, and even those who were actually skilled in magic generally eschewed any utility magic like long-range communication spells in favor of mastering attack magic.
Just when I had been ready to give up and simply allow myself to be swept along by the tides of fate, I brought the issue up with Priya who had noticed my slightly irritated expression at the time.
“Why don’t you just ask Antenora? She can use telepathy, right? I’m sure she’d be able to help since she’s the former Hero and all!”
Those words still brought a smile to my face even now. In just a single moment, Priya had managed to completely dispel the problem that I had been rushing to solve for nearly two days. I had been so focused on finding alternative solutions from the chieftains and other experienced personnel that I had forgotten about my friends.
Plus, it occurred to me that I never actually considered whether or not [Telepathy] had a range limit. As far as I was aware, the rulebook only stated that the user of the skill needed to know the name and face of the target so long as the skill was at a sufficiently high level.
If it was Antenora, I was willing to bet that her telepathy skill was strong enough for my purposes. To no one’s surprise, it really was.
“Ah. They’ve replied. ‘Lives? You didn’t strike me as the type to care about that kind of stuff when you’re focused on a goal’, is what Liandra said.”
I nodded. “Well, I ain’t. Not the way she’s thinking, at least. I’m worried about the lives of the eastern tribesmen. Those western soldiers can eat shit for all I care, ‘cause I ain’t leading ‘em.”
Antenora merely raised an eyebrow. “You’re rather cold when it comes to people who aren’t close to you, aren’t you?”
“Isn’t everyone?”
“...No. But perhaps I was too idealistic back then,” Antenora paused as her eyes grew somewhat distant for a moment. “Is there anything else you would like to say to Liandra?”
I thought for a moment before nodding decisively. We’d reach the Fissure in around a week. There was no point in delaying any longer.
“Yeah. She had a pretty high rank back in the Black Constellation, so I’d imagine she’s already used to delegating bullshit already. Tell her to contact everyone that she and Radeca have managed to collect during the past month. It’s high time we get this shit started.”
