The bar that Naru was led into was a dingy place, it was lit by a few oil lamps and the sour smell of vomit hung in the air.

“Sorry bout the mess, the man said casually”

“The name’s Hayuka by the way, don’t bother asking about my family, I don’t have one. Not that I care” He gave a small chuckle.

The tables chair in the bar were all made of rough-hewn wood and gave Naru the impression that whoever made them, prioritized stability over comfort. Despite that, Naru could still see a few of the tables barely hanging together, as if they had been broken and then hastily put back together.

Towards the back of a bar was a bar counter, although there was nobody sitting on it. It seemed like the bar was closed from the lack of patrons.

Naru walked forward and almost gave a small yelp as she nearly tripped on something, looking down at the feet she saw a giant red-haired man on the ground snoring gently.

“Ymir! Get up, you lout!” Hakuya said kicking the man harshly.

“Umm?” Naru said.

“Yes?” Hakuya said looking at her innocently.

“Won’t that hurt?” she said pointing to the man who was rolling awake on the ground.

“Ah don’t worry about that, Ymir’s a tough guy he’ll be fine he’s our bouncer anyway, I’m sure he’s taken harder hits than that” Hakuya said waving away her concerns.

“So, what will I be doing?” Naru said looking around. The way this bar was run gave her the impression it was a seedy establishment, and she was careful to gauge was Hakuya expected out of her.

“That’s simple, you’re going to be a barmaid here, duh,” You think me and Ymir can handle all the people here?” Hakuya said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Noticing Naru’s unsure expression he gave put a hand on his forehead and looked exasperated.

“Oh, don’t give me that look, I know this place looks rough but please help me out. I really need the extra hands. Besides, we don’t get that many suspicious people… I think” He said pleading with Naru

[Why do you get suspicious people at all.] Naru was still unsure and was now even more cautious after hearing that last line.

Hakuya looked tired,

“Look, I need a tough gal here, some of the people here are rowdy and the other girl quit after a month. I’ll tell you what I’ll give you double pay for the first month, and I’ll even put you up. You don’t got a place to sleep no?” Hakuya offered

[it’s not a bad offer] Naru thought. To be honest, Hakuya seemed like a trustworthy enough guy, the fact that he wasn’t lying about the type of people that would frequent the bar, showed he was being honest enough with her. Plus beggars couldn’t be choosers and Naru didn’t have any job offers given to her.

“I’ll… Take the job” She said slowly.

Hakuya looked relieved.

“Wonderful!” he said pressing his hands together.

“I’ll show you your room, come with me,” he said.

He led her up the stairs to a long hallway that was surprisingly clean

“This is our storeroom by the way,” he said pointing to a door.

“And this is your room,” He said opening a door at the end of the hallway.

Naru didn’t have high expectations for lodging in this seedy bar, but the room Hakuya showed her was surprisingly well kept. There was a small bed in the corner and a nightstand with a pitcher on it, along with a dresser.

Hakuya smiled,

“We usually use this room for especially drunk patrons, but you can sleep here for now” Hakuya said.

He tossed her an outfit that he picked out from the storeroom.

“Go get changed, this should fit you fine, though it might be airy in the chest area our last girl had quite a rack” He said while giving a lecherous grin as if thinking about something pleasant.

“Keep talking like that and I’ll quit” Naru said flattly.

“Sorry, Sorry!” Hakuya said panicking and quickly left the room, closing the door behind him.

“Naru gave a sigh once she heard the door closing behind her.

Despite his misgivings, Hakuya seemed like a nice enough guy, even if a little crass. She quickly put on the outfit that Hakuya gave her.

It was a frilly skirt along with a top, in all honesty, it looked like a dirndl outfit the skirt was a little shorter than Naru would’ve liked but it still went past the middle of her thigh, so she didn’t mind all that much.

Naru made the clothes she was currently wearing disappear and put on the outfit. Hakuya was right, that it was a little loose in the chest area and Naru resolved herself to make adjustments later.

She walked back down the stairs to see Hakuya working at the bar counter.

“Ah you’re done good, here clean these” Hakuya pulled out a bin full of dirty plates and cups.

He pointed to a wash bin, there was a spigot attached to it, that was connected to a water barrel that hung near the ceiling.

“Use that to clean it”

Naru nodded and began to work on cleaning the plates and cups.
